...Possibly the King Cousins on Warner Brothers 5678. The other side is a version of "Just One Smile", the Randy Newman song that was recorded by Gene Pitney, the Tokens and Dusty Springfield, among others.

I've never heard that record, but it's from 1965 so it's a distinct possibility!

Of course, it's equally likely that Gerry picked it up from a publisher (as Bobby Vee did with his fantastic version of Van's song "Keep On Trying") and that his is the original out of those two...

...whatever the situation, I suspect that the real original was done by Van and Kenni Woods and that we'll never hear it

I agree with Tony in that Van McCoy was mainly a songwriter who shopped his songs around to different record labels (he had his stuff end up in a bunch of weird places for people he never worked directly with). So even though it's not soul, the Gerry and the pacemakers might be the original.

Van McCoy also made recordings as a 'Middle of The Road' style singer in the style of Johnny Mathis(!) in his early days (on Columbia) - so maybe he actually recorded it on himself ??!!

I just checked my Columbia albums and singles (of which I have the lot) - not among the track listings, so I think it's almost certain that the only time he might have recorded it (if at all) was for the original publisher demo that Gerry (and possibly the King Cousins) learned it from...
