I was just ploughing through Volume 2 of the recent "Ric Tic Relics" bootleg CDs, and when J.J. Barnes' "Deeper In Love" came the speakers I suddenly became about 100% more interested in what was I was hearing. It sounded like a completely different version to the one that has existed in my mind for the past 4 decades - although both my Ric Tic and UK Polydor 45s of it (neither of which, I admit, has been played in years) are buried in the attic somewhere, so I had nothing to hand to compare it against.

To save me a vinyl trawl over the weekend, could someone confirm whether or not J.J. did record and release two quite different versions of "Deeper" on Ric Tic? I promise that I'll sleep better tonight once I have the answer...

You don't see 'Licensed From Universal Music Operations" - owners of the Ric Tic catalogue - printed on the packaging anywhere, do you? That's because it's a bootleg.

The tuppence ha'penny that has been spent on mastering these CDs merely confirms their bootleg status. Oh, and the lack of an address and other contact details that no legitimate record company would be afraid to put on their CDs somewhere is another giveaway. Granted they carry a barcode but that's probably been scanned off a can of baked beans or something...

Should anyone have even the slightest doubt about their authenticity or otherwise, the Tangerine and ABC Paramount CDs on Soulworld are bootlegs, too.

Now, does anyone have an answer to my J.J. question? Please???

I got vol 2 in HMV, and immediately bought vol 1 via ebay cheeper. Don't know about the JJ track though sorry.

Only once on Ric Tic 45 #117,i know he put a few bits out on Contempo might be on a flip of something???,

there was also the "Ric Tic relics Lp,but not sure as i don`t have the Lp or any Contempo stuff.

Frank Bryant (co writer of song) told me that they would frequently record different versions of songs, usually depending on what 'Mr.' Wingate thought when he heard them. I know that the first version of 'Real humdinger' had strings on it and a different background vocal and was longer, with another 'bridge break' in the latter half. It had to be completely re recorded because Wingate thought it was 'too busy'. The same rhythm track was used however. This could easily be the case with 'Deeper in love'. A few vinyl copies of the alternate 'Humdinger' exist. Hope this is helpful.
