Being a dancefloor beast, a Beta, a follower, a kid.

It seems I have always been a victim of my working class roots; not much cash, struggling to attend Nighters that were a bus ride, two train journeys, a good walk and a weeks money away.

Now I'm old enough to understand that the NS scene has always been a time and a place, dancefloor side, punter led.

But the amount of obviously fantastic tracks that have become major dancefloor fillers (say over the last 5/10 years....tracks that I would understand that collectors [dj's, older more experienced Soulies than myself] would have been aware of in the mid 80's for example), that have taken 25 odd years to get played to the scene is ridiculous.

I'll compress my view:

I struggle to comprehend that the amount of obvious NS dancefloor killers that have never seen the light of day over the years have recently been aired - given that I would think that they were always there and that people, jocks, collectors, were aware of them.

Again, I understand that the scene has always been dictated to by it's to's and fro's, it's social postioning, it's cyclical movements etc....but there are certain records that were never played out at Nighter level but have been known, until recently.

How?

well my view is this.yes they (the records)have been known for a long time but fall out of fashion and dont get out of the box(or attic)until a dj thinks "i haven't heard that for a long time and it might work in my set"then up it pops and it becomes big again.you also have the regional thing-whats big in notts isnt big in london etc.then a dj from notts goes to london hears something and thinks"it might work in my notts set" and bingo.a couple of basic points but with the changing people on the scene and all the different venues i think its a great way for the music scene to be.im an oldies man so it will be me who says"i havn't heard this for 25 years-i used to love it.i still love it !" and that my friends is my veiw.the spider

Yes but Spider, regional views and fashion should have little to do with understanding what is a qaulity soul production.

There are massive, and I mean Massive for me anyhow, records that have only been brought to my attention of late.

Am I wrong in feeling a little hard done by - given that I rely, and always have done (as I have had no other option, being that I am what would be classed as a follower] - by the movers and shakers on this scene?

Don't get me wrong, I have had sooooo many records brought to my attention by the aforementioned m&s, I have also been sold some crock.....while all the time there have been killer cuts waiting in the wings.

Not bored mate, just passionate and in todays heady lifestyle, and not being one who is excited by politics, this is the only time that I can put my shit down - as silly as it seems to some.

I love this music, I love people like yourself, those who take the time to reply with other than a negative.

I apologise to those on here that read the bollocks I post occasionally, it is borne of nothing more that the wont to understand what rings your bell/makes you tick.

you say what you want, i like to read views from poeple who view the nss thru young eyes instead of old eyes like mine go for it.

some of the slower stuff thats played at the mo if it was played to me in a lift id saw the cables off the lift,

i would think the internet (ebay, private auctions, record sites) and cheap air travel has alot to do with new stuff being found. it was always there, but in america where they probably didn't share our love of what we call ''northern soul''.

as the purveys of our scene search for new stuff it is then brought to our attention

but as collectors, finding records as become easier via the net, but harder at the same time, as it is accessible for any one to find hidden/lost gems if they put the work in at the computer.

and of course fashions change, as said before, quality slower stuff is now getting a chance
