I know this was covered in a previous thread - that Tyrone Davis's classic "Can I Change My Mind" (Dakar) was re-issued, on various Old Gold type labels, with a different, earlier, rawer (and better) take...

I've just picked up a spare copy on Roulette (was trying to find a vinyl copy to replace my styrene ABC one) - and was amazed to hear this one's the alternate version, but has female backing vocals. Anyone else heard this?

I love the version on MCA :lamsey: . Great Horns...

Tolbert

I love the original on Dakar/Atlantic but the roulette version is the bees knees.

However the best version for me is not by Tyrone davis but by Joe Johnson on Syla rtecords- Its so laid back and sublime.

Dakar 602 (or 1452 if you have the local issue) is one of those epochal, unbeatable 'lightning in a bottle' moments in soul music - a truly groundbreaking record that could not have been improved upon, even if they had cut a thousand takes of it.

No other version could ever come close, I'm afraid - be it by Tyrone or anyone else. The only one even worth mentioning in the same breath is that of Alton Ellis on Studio One...

Never heard the Alton Ellis

can you put up on refosoul Tony?

Cheers

Just another thing- Doesnt it make you mad when people(So called Djs) play Bootlegs & reissues of big tunes when they could buy an original of this fantastic record for 10 squid and be brave enough to play it out !

Oh dear. Can. Worms... The reason I bought the Roulette "re-issue" is that it's the "original" issue of the "alternate" earlier take. I had the Dakar one already, in fact bought it at the very first niter I went to at the Manchester Ritz. Fond memories...

I know Tony Rounce has the roulette copy or the other lable its on as I followed a thread last year and bought the roulette one with Eddie Holman on one side and I prefer that one to the Dakar

The roulette one is not a reissue as its a different take altogether.

I meant these so called djs buying Jo Jama boots as apposed to buying Tyrone davis original whether on DAKAR / ATlantic/Roulette and playing that out.

No Can of worms - Just a valid opinion as I see it
