brief but maybe of interest

Jimmy Guilford didn't become a mainstream star when he made records in Detroit, but the Indianapolis-based singer has an after-the-fact following overseas.

U.K. fans of vintage R&B -- known as Northern Soul collectors -- pay as much as $200 for a vinyl 45 of Guilford's "Nobody Loves Me Like My Baby."

Guilford signed to Thelma Records in the early 1960s and dropped the "u" in his last name at the time to help DJs with pronunciation.

Guilford previously was a member of the Four Sounds vocal group, which recorded for Indianapolis-based label Tuff Records. A 1960 single titled "The Ring" earned airplay on the East Coast, Guilford says.

Later in the decade, local company LAMP Records aspired to Motown heights.
