  2. here's an interesting usa view of the uk northern soul back in 1975.... Clipped from The Tennessean, 22 Jun 1975, Sun, Page 152 Found on Newspapers.com click to view By KIM GARFIELD It's 2 a.m. in Wigan, England and 1,500 people are jammed inside the steaming casino, ready to enjoy the all-night all-night all-night bliss of music, dancing and brotherhood. They are Britain's new baggy-trousered "wheelies," representing a new youth scene, a new sound, a new way of dancing. And a new way of life. A five-star wheelie carries a dufflebag containing three changes of clothing, toothbrush, comb and a stack of records. They dance the night away at the Heavy Steam Machine in Stoke on a Friday, catch the early session next day at Blackpool, be in Wigan for the all-nighter (8 p.m. to 8 a.m.) and still have the strength and legs to tackle the Sunday all-dayer (noon to midnight) at Burnley's Rose Room. There are more than 1,000 wheelie clubs throughout England and the craze is spreading. But Wigan is the place where wheelie dancing to the "Northern Soul Sound," started. The 23,000 registered members of the casino come from near and far to this fraternity where everybody is referred to as "brother," and where the only motivation is to share a good time. Wheelie dancing is basically the "Mohammed Ali shuffle," danced continuously until, at some point, three dynamic steps have to be thrown in : The Spin executed on one leg with arms folded; The Back Flip in which the boy bends himself backwards, maintaining the beat with alternate hands on the floor; The Crunch the boy jumps high and comes down on one knee with a thud. The Northern Sound is a big band sound, lots of strings and a driving, hand-clapping beat. But it's the all-night session that really provides the soul-searching and none of the clubs serve hard liquor. There's simply no time for drinking. As Mike Walker, manager at Wigan, says : "Most of these kids work in terrible, dreary factories all week and live in grim places. At the weekend they've got to find a safety valve somehow. Northern Soul is their peaceful solution the answer to all those who say the youngsters of today are ignorant, ignorant, selfish thugs." The dancers themselves, dressed in the wheelie uniforms of baggy pants and T-shirts T-shirts T-shirts (for boys) and three-quarter dresses (for girls), were quick to explain their new lifestyle. "So many of us were sick of disc jockeys in London, record companies in London, television companies in London, telling us how great were such groups as Slade and Gary Glitter," said 19-year-old Gerry, a car foundry worker who's known to the wheelie fraternity as "Spider." "Right on, brother," interjects Geoff, a 21-year-old black youth. "Northern Soul is the kind of music you can get inside of, instead of having to watch some idiot in a shiny suit jumping about selling himself. "When you meet somebody who's clapping in the right places to that big, beautiful beat and letting the music reach his soul, then you've got something going. Sex, color, religion doesn't come into it. You're brothers. That's what it's all about." Trisha, an attractive 20-year-old blonde who works in a clothing factory and lives with her parents in Manchester, explained how her parents felt about her all-night all-night all-night activities: activities: "Why should anyone worry about me being out all night when they know where I am and that there's not going to be any trouble? That's the big thing with Northern Soul ... it doesn't mix with trouble of any kind." At Wigan, 1,000 young people are back-flipping, knee-crunching spinning and floating like butterflies through the night. There's no trouble. Nobody bothers even to keep an eye on unattended duffle bags. As the youngsters say in greeting each other: "Keep the faith, brother, keep the faith."

  13. Back in 1966 (the 20th of May to be exact) the latest edition of the Detroit Free Press Newspaper had on offer a lengthy feature on Detroit's Golden World Records, concerning itself with such topics as the studio, the recording process and artists such as JJ Barnes and Edwin Starr Thanks to the ever-expanding online newspaper archives (this one being newspapers.com ) you can read this feature almost as easy as on the day it was first published... Found on Newspapers.com Found on Newspapers.com Click the above clips to read the text Find it an interesting resource and could be a useful addition to the resources already on offer such as Billboard etc, though finding the time needed to search in depth may be harder than the actual travelling back! Found on Newspapers.com Clipped from Detroit Free Press, 20 May 1966, Fri, Page 32 A Record Is Made with Sweat and Soul BY LORAINE ALTERMAN Emotion filled the control room at Golden World Records out on West Davison. Driving, big beat sounds were coming through the four speakers hanging on the wall above the big glass panel. On the other side of the glass, Edwin Starr was singing full of soul. Along with the studio musicians was his own group of five, scattered around the big soundproof room trumpet trumpet player, bass, sax, drums and guitar. In the control room, Bob D' Orleans (chief recording engineer) pushed his fist into the air in time with the beat. Al Kent and Richard Morris (co-producers (co-producers (co-producers for the session) jumped around, danced, shook their heads in time. Suddenly Bob jumped up from the control board. Something was wrong with the drums. The drummer was inside a baffle a padded wood partition to keep the sound in one place so it isn't picked up on other mikes but the drums were not right. "Got a billfold?" Bob asked. "Tape it it to the drum." Edwin and the others started again and this time the drum sound was softer. Now they made it. After two hours of rehearsing like this Edwin Starr was ready to start taping. A record was in the process of being made. But it was 10 hours later and five songs more before they were finished. And the record still was days away. You probably think it's a pretty simple thing to make a record. Like an artist just has to walk into the studio, open his mouth in song, and pow! it's down on tape. But, that's not the way it is. A lot of hard work by a lot of people you don't hear too much about goes into getting that sound onto records. And, for the record company company a lot of anguish goes Into wondering whether that record Is going to be a hit because hits are the things that pay the rent. For a company like Detroit's Golden World, 50,000 records sold starts bringing in the profits. This firm is about two years old, but they've only had their own studio for a little over a year. Before that, president and founder of Golden World, Joanne Bratton, used to take her artists to Chicago or New York to record. In January, 1964 the company company had its first big hit, "Romeo and Juliet" by the Reflections. It made the top 10 nationally and Joanne decided decided it was time to get a studio together. THE VOICE of Edwin Starr fills the studio at Detroit's Detroit's Golden World as he gets his sounds on tape with J. J. Barnes swinging on piano and Tyrone Hite on drums. Edwin, aiming for songs with universal appeal, says, " 'Stop Her On Sight' appealed to teens and adults. Fellows are looking for girls and girls for fellows." Edwin Writes His Songs "I dont the opening thing. It doesn't mean anything. It's nothing that would catch my ear," says Bob D'Orleans, left, to Edwin as they stand in the control room next to the tape machine. BOB D'ORLEANS works at the control board adjusting the level of sounds coming through amplifiers from the studio. "I cut no sessions without Bob. He's my hitmaker," says Edwin.

They were a short lived group but the four songs recorded have stood the test of time and still sound great to this day. We interviewed original bass player Paul Boudreaux and chief songwriter for the low down on the group. Paul is still playing around New Orleans today and has a history steeped with quality music. Where were you born Paul? New Orleans. When did music become important to you? I could have been around 3 or 4 years old when I first remember music. I was raised in the Uptown are of New Orleans, by a place called the Dew Drop Inn, which was a black club, a real swanky black club with live entertainment being played right around the clock. I can remember hearing music every day back then. When was this Paul? I was born in 1945 and the Dew Drop was opened in the same year with the lounge first. It was at the first time. I can remember walking past through with my mum and dad going to the stores or going to church. I would always hear music and see entertainment outside. I guess music’s been with me all my life. Do you have any brothers and sisters? Yes I’ve got one brother and two sisters. One was a school teacher and the other was a truck driver. My mother sang in a choir at church of course. My uncle Matt played piano and sang also. Do you remember any of the live acts that you were seeing then? The Dew Drop Inn was a club and hotel for black entertainers. Back in those days black entertainers couldn’t stay in white hotels so they would come to the Dew Drop Inn and get meals, get to play music and also a place to stay. So during that time there was Ray Charles, Count Basie and all the big guys would come to play the Dew Drop or if they were playing somewhere else in Louisiana they would stay at the Dew Drop Hotel where they would get a meal, a haircut, a place to stay and get their clothes cleaned before they moved to the next town. I started playing music in the army in 1965 when I bought a bass guitar from a guy that was leaving Germany and I had just got to Germany. He was selling a bass guitar man and I bought it. I taught myself to play some songs and I taught myself to play some musical scales. I was like I like this. I always did have a love for bass. I always loved the sound of bass in a song. I leaned towards the bass because it's such a powerful instrument. I would practise the whole song from the beginning to the end over and over again. Then you would find where the song was going with the changes from the bass. I love the bass. It’s all about bass and drums. Yes it is, the bottom man. Did you join any bands whilst you were in the army? Yes I did. There was about 8 of us with guys from all over America that formed a group. It just so happened that the band got so good that the company I was in put us on a bus and we toured Germany playing for the soldiers. That was really interesting and something new. I was like “woah! I’m a musician right now! I’m not just a soldier I’m a real musician!” How did you find Germany? I was based around all the night clubs and all the clubs so we were able to play on our off nights Saturday and Sunday nights in the German clubs for the soldiers and got paid. It wasn’t much money but they paid us. I had a wonderful time in Germany, a wonderful time. Do you remember what songs you were playing back then? The favourite was “Mustang Sally” of course in 1965. We did stuff like “Wooly Bully,” “Gloria” by Van Morrison, a lot of songs by the Stones and Bob Dylan. We picked songs that we liked from the radio or that got played on the jukeboxes that we thought would excite the crowd. We were playing everything like jazz, soul, gospel, rock, we played psychedelic and all that man. When did you leave the army? I left in May 1967 and came back to New Orleans. I heard for the first time “Knock On Wood” by Eddie Floyd. That song was so laid back and funky. I picked up my bass and quickly learned that song. That bass line and Stax! I came back to New Orleans and my cousin saw me walking down the street and he was like “man I heard that you’re playing bass now!” I was like “yes!” “Do you have any equipment?” I was like “sure.” He said “well get it and come with me.” He had a gig for me. My first gig was at a lounge bar. I was sitting in for a bass player who was late. They needed a bass player so I started the gig. When the guy got there they were like that’s ok we’ve got a new bass player now. I said “What! You’re kidding.” “We’re going to keep you.” That was my first band I played with when I got back to New Orleans. The Bobby Williams Group who did “Boogaloo Mardi Gras” with Bobby, Paul Boudreaux, Louis Clark and Eddie Bo. Do you know Eddie Bo? “Hook and Sling.” That’s me on “Hook and Sling” with James Black on drums, George Davis on guitar and Eddie Bo on piano. When I got back to New Orleans Eddie heard the band playing. We did a lot of sessions back then. How did the Las Vegas Connection come about? Well I was playing a place Alhambra Club with another band called Uptown Rulers. Aaron Neville was a singer, with Willie West. Check out these front guys Aaron Neville, Willie West and John Adams. They are some of the best singers on the planet. I was playing at this club and the pay wasn’t right so I was getting frustrated. At the same time Humphrey was upset with his bass player and he came down to talk with me, asked me to make a move. So I moved to this other band the Las Vegas Connection, who were playing at a club called the Mason’s Las Vegas Strip, which was a little club uptown. We were playing there for about 3 or 4 years before we started recording. They didn’t have any original material then, but they always chose the right songs. When I got in the band I was like let’s stop playing everybody else’s songs and let’s consider doing songs that we write. We know how to play, let’s be creative and stop playing everybody else’s songs. Let’s do our own material. They were like nobody wants to hear that. I said “who is nobody. These people don’t know where it’s come from if it’s good. Let’s just do it.” So I convinced them to start recording, so me, Humphrey Davis and Larry Santiago started writing songs. Then we hooked up with a guy called Senator Jones, the producer and he recorded us. What happened was Marshall Seahorn and Allen Toussaint took our material to California where Mercury Records and Casablanca Records wanted us, but what happened was that Allen was asking for too much money upfront. They knew that it was good material but they wouldn’t bend on how much they wanted to sign the group. They were like they’re an unknown group so let’s make a deal for everybody. Get them in and we’ll talk later, but they wouldn’t bend. So we had no major label on that. You never died because both singles are still popular today. Did you record any other songs? No we didn’t. Who were the other members of the group? There was Raymond Fletcher played the keyboards, Humphrey Davis Jr. Stanley Stephen played the drums, Jackie Pettis was the lead vocalist, Larry Santiago played the guitar & Frank Parker played the trumpet and I played bass. Jackie had a great voice. He was something else. He passed away a stranger way which was that he got murdered in the French Quarters. When the group split up what did you do next? I played with other people like Willie West, Irma Thomas, Marva Wright and people like that. Then I put together a band with some guys who were interested in my playing and with that group I started writing again. This was around 1995 and they were called the Blues Krewe with a guy named Willie Lockett singing. Do you still see the other band members of Las Vegas Connection? There’s only one other band member alive and that’s Frank Parker. Were you aware that your records were being played over in Europe? No I wasn’t, but they were good records but just didn’t get the right attention. Many thanks to Cordial Recording for sharing this interview. Release date 29th January 2017. This is now available for pre-order and purchase options for the 45 can be found via the Cordial Recordings link below http://5767.co.uk/product/las-vegas-connection/
