From the BBC series, Black Music Legends of the 1980s. Aired 2011 Episode 4 of 4 DURATION: 1 HOUR In the late 1980s Public Enemy were the biggest rap group on the planet. Their mission: to raise the consciousness of a generation. With a rebellious attitude to match their militant image they sold millions of records preaching pro-black politics to fans of all races, all done through a groundbreaking wall of noise that changed the sound of hip hop. White, middle Americans were outraged, but their kids loved it. Not surprisingly, this confrontational approach attracted controversy. Critics claimed the group themselves were racist, exposing racial divides rather than promoting equality. They were banned from some TV and radio stations and when one member reportedly made anti-Semitic remarks in a newspaper interview the resulting media-storm threatened to end their career. Tensions were running high and arguments within the band ended in violence. Could they keep it together long enough to get their message across? Belgium, 1970. While most radio stations and discotheques are playing the pop and rock hits of the day, a new venue opens in the small village of Vrasene, near Sint-Niklaas. The place is called The Popcorn and the dj’s play obscure soul records which they slow down in order to create their own sound. A few years later, music lovers and dancers come from all over Belgium, France and The Netherlands to enjoy this unique music, which they refer to as ‘the Popcorn sound’ or ‘Popcorn Oldies’. Fast forward forty years, and Popcorn is known all over the world. This short film tells the story of Popcorn through the eyes of dj’s Gerry and Gibbe, two of the founding fathers of the genre. They speak about the early days of the scene, about record digging in basements in the UK, and they return for a last time to The Popcorn, which closed in 2003. As the building is currently in the process of being demolished, this is the last footage ever shot of one of the most legendary discotheques in Belgium. In its heyday, besides Churchill on tenor sax and vibes, the band featured Charlie Hearndon on guitar, James Baker on keyboards, Robin Russell on drums, Robert "Lurch" Jackson on trumpet, Austin Lander on baritone sax, Leroy Taylor on bass, and, later, Carl McDaniel on guitar. Earlier members included Johnny Graham, later of Earth, Wind & Fire and Jerry Bell also a member at one time. Under this name, the group had a few hits before the formation of New Birth proper, including "K-Jee" (#17 R&B, #39 pop,1971). In 1969, Vernon Bullock had thought of creating an ensemble of groups for a touring company and Harvey Fuqua and Tony Churchill soon took an interest. After discovering a male vocal group, The Now Sound, which featured Bobby Downs, Ron Coleman, Gary Young and an individual known as "Slim," and also a female vocal group, known as Mint Julep, which featured Londee Loren, Tanita Gaines, Janice Carter and Pam Swent, they brought them together with The Nite-Liters plus additional vocalist, Alan Frye, calling the newly formed ensemble, New Birth. The band came together in 1970 with their self-titled debut on RCA. Their second album, Ain't No Big Thing, But It's Growing, yielded a minor hit with their cover of Perry Como's "It's Impossible", in 1971. Later that year, Bullock discovered a group from Detroit, Michigan called Love, Peace & Happiness, which featured former Marvelettes singer Ann Bogan and brothers Leslie and Melvin Wilson. Finding that they had the spark that was missing from the New Birth ensemble, he paired them with the Nite-Liters and original members of New Birth, Londee Loren, Bobby Downs and Alan Frye. In 1972, the reorganized group (as a 17-piece ensemble) reached the Billboard R&B top 10 (#4 R&B, #35 pop) with their cover of Bobby Womack and The Valentinos' "I Can Understand It", which paved the way for the band's future success. By the time the song hit the stores, however, Ann had left to devote time to her family, leaving Londee Loren as the only female member. When Harvey reportedly could not get the performance he wanted out of Londee on their next hit, "Until It's Time for You to Go", it featured, instead of the group members, future Supremes member Susaye Greene as lead vocalist, with Harvey and Carolyn Willis of Honey Cone doing the spoken intro. First Lady of Southern Soul, Candi Staton, who cut sixteen deep fried Billboard R&B chart hits in the early 1970s, will finally release her 27th album “Life Happens” in the UK on October 27th. Teams Up With Jason Isbell, John Paul White and Fame Records Producer Rick Hall It’s Candi’s third Americana/Roots oriented project since garnering unexpected attention in the genre with her 2006 acclaimed CD “His Hands”. The new collection pairs Staton with FAME Records producer Rick Hall (who produced her early `70s southern soul hits such as “Stand By Your Man” and “He Called Me Baby”) for the first time since 1974. “Being in the studio with Rick was like old times” says Staton who Hall recently inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. With recent performances on Letterman and an upcoming UK tour including a main stage performance at Bestival, Staton shows no signs of letting up. Of course fans will be excited to hear some of Candi’s more famous numbers such as ‘Young Hearts Run Free’ but the tracks such as ‘Where I’m At’ and ‘Beware’ will have people dancing in no time. https://soundcloud.com/candi-staton/i-aint-easy-to-love-final The 15-track record opens with Hall’s funk-fueled country rocker “I Ain’t Easy to Love” that finds Staton performing with Jason Isbell (who scored a 2011 hit with his update of Staton’s obscure 1969 ditty “Heart on a String”) and John Paul White of The Civil Wars. “They were so much fun to work with” Staton adds. “I really love what they added to the song and they sing with a soulfulness beyond their ages.” The concept album tells the story of a romance from its beautiful beginning to its bitter end. Hall produced the upbeat plea for “Commitment” and the heartbreaking “Never Even Had A Chance.” Staton’s London-based band PUSH produced the smoldering “Close to You” and the brassy “Where I’m At”. Staton’s son Marcus Williams, a drummer who’s toured with Peabo Bryson and Isaac Hayes, produced the remainder of the soul-stirring album. The project comes on the heels of a revival of Staton’s music among a new generation of artists such as Isbell. Florence & The Machine enjoyed a Top Ten platinum smash with their cover of Staton’s “You Got the Love”. Other acts have sampled her sounds such as Christina Aguilera (“Here to Stay”) and One Eskimo (“Kandi” which hit #1 on Triple A chart in 2010). Staton wrote and co-wrote nine of the tracks and they all mirror her own romantic ups and downs over the years. “I’ve had good times and bad times in my relationships” she says. “I’ve been cheated on, lied to and everything you can name but that’s life. That’s why I named the CD Life Happens because you don’t plan for these things. People's Records in Detroit is an institution with a rich history: after its original location was burnt to the ground back in 2008, the store's longstanding owner Brad Hales was just about able to salvage a few collections of 45s from the cinders. Those precious remainders now sit amongst a vast collection of esoteric jazz, soul and R&B in a new location. We spent an afternoon streaming from the store, soundtracked by the bittersweet soul of Brad's rare collection of 45s.
