In the process of this, even un-released material was discovered on the tapes, which makes this a rather special package. “Nana Love - Disco Documentary Full Of Funk” is one special journey through Afro Disco & Boogie in the late 70s, and we at BBE can guarantee that you won’t be disappointed!!! Release blurb goes like this... Though the iconic imagery of Disco feels distinctly tied to the United States, the style had a wide-reaching influence that made it’s way to Africa. While Africa was already no stranger to the pulsing rhythms of funk, Afro-beat, and highlife, the rise of disco added a slick sheen to the music, with musicians from all over the continent incorporating elements of the genre into their sounds. Would there ever have been a Studio 54 in Ghana in late 70s, these would have been the recordings that would have packed the dance floor with their deep root in Disco, Soul & Funk! Some words from Tony Rounce via the Ace website offer a good idea on what this cd is all about 'The previous two volumes of the series presented a cross-section of exceptional, and mostly unissued, material from the vaults of Fame studios from the prime years of Rick Hall’s funky building on Avalon Avenue in Muscle Shoals. A sizeable portion of the tracks featured here only came to light during our ongoing research. From the news report on Miami New Times... RIP Henry Stone, King of Independent Records, Dead at 93 Henry Stone, king of the record business, passed away peacefully early August 8, 2014, in Miami. Throughout almost 80 years of wildly prolific musical activity, the 93-year-old had a hand in every aspect of the music business and was a true pioneer of independent manufacturing, promotion, and distribution. In the 1970s he ran the biggest independent record company in the world, TK Productions, responsible for the world's first global disco hit, George McCrae's genre defining "Rock Your Baby," penned by the leaders of his biggest act ever, KC & the Sunshine Band. They, along with the session musicians ultimately joined Stone in 1968 and immediately began putting out hit songs. Betty Wright’s “Girls Can’t Do What the Guys Do” was #1 on the local R&B station in July 1968, and reached #33 on Billboard’s National Top 40. In 1969, Stone combined all the music and business talent under one commercial roof, TK Productions. He started labels such as TK Records and others that from 1971 — 1979 produced R&B and Pop Chart hits the world over. The Miami soul sound had its first breakout hit in 1971 with Clean Up Woman by Betty Wright. As near as I can figure, this must be it. Toni Basil is a woman of many talents. She's been an actress (including a nude turn in the classic Easy Rider), dancer, choreographer (including the Frankie & Annette beach movies and the Monkees film Head), video artist, and sometimes she sings. With the singing, she's best known for her 1982 #1 single, "Mickey". In 1966, using her full name (Antonia Christina Basilotta) she recorded a song called "Breakaway", with underground filmmaker Bruce Conner directing a short 16mm film of it.
