  1. Heres some good news!! SCENESVILLE have announced details of their new venue. The club, who had their final event at Notre Dame on December 7th, have had to move from the Leicester Square venue to make way for the venues conversion to a theatre. The next Scenesville Rare 60s Soul night will be held at The Camden Centre, an eye-popping Grade II listed 1930s opera hall that has been converted into a ballroom and is conveniently situated exactly opposite St Pancras Station on the Euston Road, a minutes walk from Kings Cross train and underground stations and four minutes from Euston. With easy parking close by, superb acoustics, a whopping 8K sound system and a late bar, all the ingredients are there for a cracking night of 60s Rare and Northern Soul. Top that off with all the classic Scenesville sounds plus guest spots by Guy Hennigan and Dave Rimmer and its looking like another cant-miss night for 2002. SCENESVILLE FRIDAY FEBRUARY 22nd THE CAMDEN CENTRE EUSTON ROAD LONDON (directly opposite St Pancras Station) ANDY RIX, DAWN BROWN and NICK BROWN plus guests GUY HENNEGAN and DAVE RIMMER 9pm-2am, £8 members (£9 non-members) www.scenesville.com . *********

  3. Weekend Going Ons A fair few events happened and heres a brief run down of some of them, dont forget if want to pass on to rest of world what your event was just hit that submit button and let them know!! Notre Dame - Friday Heard it was a packer with a great atmosphere, and great sounds. As you may have read it was the last current one there due to the venue being converted into a theatre.Which is a great shame, as to me it was one of the leading uk soul nites, and definitely a unique venue. Lets face it anywhere which has such a strong regular dj line up and regular top drawer guests is going to be severley missed. The promoters are looking at new venues, hopefully news will arrive soon. Big thanks go out to promoters, regular djs and all the guest djs - Nick and Dawn Brown, Andy Rix, Chris Dale and all for giving uk soul fans great quality rare soul nites at this great venue over the last 18 months Prestwich - Friday Heard it was a packer, with Tim Brown getting the thumbs up from mate as the spot he most enjoyed, said a great set. Reckons overall the nite on the main floor was mostly mix of current and revivals, with Ginger Taylor giving a great mixed set, he tried to check out the modern room but says as so popular and thus packed it was operating a one in one out policy. Bangor - Friday A local soul nite at the Bangor City Social Club up here in North Wales. Had a most enjoyable nite, a great range of quality sounds from all djs, current floorpackers, upfront r+b, top 70s, classy revivals , popular oldies. Something for everyone - being an apt phase. Guest Djs inc Mark Mac, Mark Morgan, Bob Schaffer. Round about 120 + in, if you in North Wales area next one is Friday Jan 05 more details soon 100 Club Saturday Thanks to Nick who passed on a quick few words to let you know that ....yes it was another great nite at the 100 club! 100 was bloody busy, expecting the usual pre Christmas quiet night, so was really surprised, good to see soul fans from Pisa, Italy over for the night. Good spots from Ginger, only heard one spot from Arthur Fenn (he had Soul Sam carry his boxes!!!) started off with a couple of sixties then went into some nice xover, the ole shoes pair played some real nice bits Ady with his usual top drawer bits. A really good night, dance floor kicking all night, went mental when Ginger (?) played the Helen Troy thing, ace night, always enjoy it more when you're expecting just a bit of socialising and it turns into one of those "everybodys up for it nights" Great. Jazz Fm - Sunday Well managed to catch it this week, and has a most enjoyable time listening to it, Tim Brown was the guest this week and him and Richard S delivered a thoroughly good show, loads of unissues, rarities, as you may imagine and usual high standard of information. Few odds snips of news below Big laughs at Gingers delayed request, with a request for "you hit me where it hurts" and a message for his sparring partner Tim Brown to watch out for those vandals. (just a wild guess but think this may have something to do with someones recent antics at a weekender ;) ) Guest on Boxing Day is Shifty so write that in diary Goldmine CD - Niter 3 out in Feb covering the "Now" Northern Scene Carla Whitney - Albert Jones rare Canadian lps are out on one single GM cd out this week Next weeks guest Derek Pearson, so definitely sack Christmas shopping on that day Next Rare Soul Review out in Jan Audio of above to follow hopefully!

  10. From Dave Mo a few words on the weekend. Who later added the words "BTW it was just like my 1st allnighter at Wigan or my 1st visit to The Mecca" Posted earlier on Soul-Talk - The Only List for Real Northern Soul Info and News! I would just like to say a massive thank you to Matt, all the djs and everyone who was there on Friday night for one of the most enjoyable nights Ive had in many years. The atmosphere and the sounds were brilliant. Myself and my mate Jason travelled up from Bournemouth on Friday and after finding a parking spot hit The Boston Arms for a couple of well earned pints after fighting our way thru the traffic where we met Steve Csordas and Carol plus his mate Molly. I dont know why its taken us 2yrs to get up to The Dome but well definitley be back in the new year and hopefully with a few more soulies from the Bournemouth area in tow. Thanks for the tape its the dogs proverbials and was on the tape deck in the car all the way home later that night. Once again many thanks to all the djs for a brilliant night. Dave Mo

  12. Well mentioned it earlier and here's a more detailed view Big thanks to Shirley for a well "spanking" account Posted earlier on Soul-Talk - The Only List for Real Northern Soul Info and News! Friday 30 Nov - Im sorry this is a long one, some of the tracks played are listed at the end of the report This has got to have been the best soul nite (musically speaking)I have attended to date, the music was just spanking!!! (thats my latest word to describe anything that is just too good to be described any other way) This was our first trip to the venue with the usual posse of John, Dawn, Colin & myself; we arrived around 10ish, we had tried to get there earlier, but John did the now accustomed tour of the surronding area - although this time we did spot the venue before motoring off up the road in completely the wrong direction on a one way system - not quite lost this time, but we still got to hear Johns latest profanities as we tried to make our way back; our journeys to venues are not complete without this little ritual 😉 Anyway we finally arrived and in we go chomping at the bit, times a wasting, Its quite a small, intimate cellar bar venue (my favourite sort) not dissimilar to the Beehive at Bradford, the boys headed straight to the bar for refreshments whilst Dawn & I looked for seating, we found somewhere and I did my usual dumping of bags and coats and made my way to the dancefloor. From there on in it was sheer heaven, we knew it was going to be as the guest DJs were Andy Rix and Rob Thomas, unfortunately as we had arrived later than planned we missed most of the local jocks / collectors sets, but the bit I did catch was a good start. I finally got to meet Andy Rix - at previous venues where he has been DJing I always seemed to miss having a quick chat, Ive even been mis-directed by "well meaning" friends and spoken to some poor unsuspecting bloke whos only crime was to have a passing resemblance to the description of Andy I had been given - well Andy now Ive finally met you I would just like to say that I didnt think your ears were that big 😉 - so much for "well meaning" friends!! All the DJs, but especially Andy & Rob played some good, good toons, the dancefloor was full all night, but there was still room for a stunt dancer to knock Dawn over (lucky that table was there to break your fall Dawn, otherwise all the chin rubbers & anoraks in the corner behind you would have gone over like a set of dominos ;-)) The stunt dancer probably had to attend the nearest hospital A&E on his way home as he managed to fall over no less than four times throughout the evening, each fall being more spectacular than the previous one. I think it was a combination of the booze in him and the condensation on the floor which had turned the whole cellar bar into a pseudo ice-skating rink. Anyway thanks to all punters & DJs alike for a spanking evening I don't think I could have attended anywhere in the UK this weekend and heard better tunes and had a better night:-o Here's a short list of some of the records played, in no particular order, throughout the evening (sorry theres no credits to particular DJs I'm afraid you'll have to work out who might have played what): Jessie James - Love is alright Willie & the Magnificents - Check it baby Johnny & the Weirdest - Cant get over these memories Imperial Challengers - Somebody tell her Herman Hitson - love slipped through my fingers Jimmy Radcliffe - thrill of loving you Kim Weston - Im still loving you Cindy Scott - In one ear and out the other Wallie Hawkins & Rose McCoy - switch around Scott English - you made a man out of me Blue Notes - rags to riches Chris Bartley - out of my mind Kenny Shepherd - What difference does it make ............the list just goes on and on with mouth watering, toe tapping goodies so I'll leave it at that except to add Rob Thomas played a great male vocal c/up that was totally new to me. Also a special mention about Ross, (Greatstone Hotel Promoter and totally great guy) who sadly died last week - he'll be greatly missed - the whole evening was a fitting send off for another soul hero who has left us. Shirley

  14. Friday 7th December sees Scenesvilles final date at Notre Dame, as the venue will be converting to a theatre in January in order to put on a musical about the life and times of Boy George! The organisers are currently working hard to find an alternative venue, but in the meantime, this is your last chance to dance to Rare 60s Soul on that famous Notre Dame dancefloor, so make sure you get yourselves down there on the 7th to be in on the send-off party of the year! For more details see www.scenesville.com. If you need memberships, just e-mail driveller@supanet.com with your name and address, or register via the website.

  17. Word on last nite at the Dome was that it was a packer, with one of the longest queues, normal quality great sounds, great atmosphere, described in the words of one as the nite was "well mental". A right old celebration of 2 great years Have a brief view on the nite by Mike Hump. Plus story about a guy who must live on another planet Dome 2nd Anniversary - Friday 2nd December 2001 A great deal has been said about the Dome since it opened 2 years ago in North London. Strangely there seemed to be less anticipation about this one than of late. Can't understand why there was the usual excellent home team line up with Guest DJ - Kenny Burrell. Perhaps the southern scene is suffering from excellence fatigue and is starting to take its three top nites (100 club, Scenesville and CSC) plus the many smaller events and warmers for granted. There seemed to be more chat in the week before about who would be let in (or not). For once I was early and was in the pub by 8.30, there was already a gaggle of soulies inside and the atmosphere soon warmed up. The first 50 through the door got a free tape - regretfully I was well to the back and missed out. But everyone was given a 2nd anniversary badge - nice one to match the first. Musically a top nite, I was feeling a bit rough with a cold and intended to leave early but after a gradual build up I stayed till the end. Kenny Burrell did a top mixed set, stand out for the crowd was "Wake up to the sunshine girl" which got the biggest applause of the night. Of course the floor was rammed to "that" record which also got a big cheer. The crowd doesn't forget their roots. What stood out for me was the consistent high quality of the sounds through the night. Also a particular pleasure for me was the top line R&B mix especially the last hour and a half. The night finished off with a few oldies leaving the crowd wanting more and me pleased that I didn't bunk off early. Dance floor was busy all evening, very few gaps - a further tribute to the DJ's. At the end the crowd wanted more and things only stopped when the managers took the cartridge off the decks. I think it was a first for me 1st time in two years of London events when I didn't hear "Voodoo Working" or maybe I just missed it. One or two moments that stuck out on the social side, Matt Jahans telling everyone that he was pissed - yeah, and his point was? Also, Steve Heinsen selling videotapes of the Dome "Sidney Barnes" 30th March nite. Good footage of the place, dancers and interviews by Winston of the DJ's: A snip at £8, watched it today - excellent value. Even better Steve sold one to Matt - what a salesman. If you want one you can mail Steve on sheinsen@aol.com. Written By Mike Hump Thanks as always to soul fans who take the time to pass on rest of us what went on -------------------------------------------------------------- Heard a story about a guy who needs to get himself on a "living in the real world" course as soon as possible! Imagine that you were involved with a new soul event. You plan it to run the day after the next CSC Dome event, not only that you plan it to run it in the same area, not only that but you plan to run it clashing with every CSC Dome for the whole bloody year!! With me so far, now also throw in the fact that you never once bothered to liase with any of the CSC to try and work out dates when setting up your event, and well gotta say that you dont sound either very clever or very friendly at all. Ok so just imagine you did the above, would you then turn up at the Dome and start flyering your new event without asking promoter or ought , you know the one that has been set up to clash in the same area, on the same weekend for the whole year! And if you did how long do you think you get away with it Well Kevin, you might be naive or just stupid, but when reading your moaning about it today thought, what planet are you living on. Did you honestly think it was a good idea trying to advertise in a nite that your new event has been set up to clash with?? Of course some may say it was a cynical PR stunt, from your mentors dirty tricks book. Nah never....

  25. Weekend was a good one, few words on some of the events that went on... Heres some of the things that went on Been told the Bury soul nite on Friday was well packed, full dancefloor all nite, music mainly oldies style, with Ginger mixing in a fair few current sounds. Also Dave Evison and his son Joshua? 13 years old (?) in action Attendence of 1000+ there quoted, one mate says was a really good night with great atmosphere, and a great mix of sounds, only time floor wasnt full was when a couple of dodgy wigan "classics" were played. Plus heard that some DJs were having a great time with some great one-liners Saturday King Georges Blackburn was on, heard from one guy who went, that he didnt enjoy it, too many beer monsters in attendance meaning a soggy dancefloor Winsford Niter Saturday A most enjoyable nite, wasnt a packer but not sparse either. Top tip - turned up early to grab few beers, but the pub across carpark is now boarded up, so thought hit bar inside, big mistake as bottles only and at 2.20 each just a bit expensive, gotta be pub 5 mins down road next time Dj wise -There was some problems with planned line up as many were delayed and things had to be juggled a bit, which with my memory, the fact that was not driving, may just reflect in details! Keith Money - Scotlands finest. This spot was the main must hear for me as last time heard him at the 100 Club did a great set , must have been the most travelled furthest DJ but unfortunately was only given a 45 min spot, started off as expected top rare sounds, all his normal top stuff- dancefloor full of those who like their soul rare and full of quality, the last 15 mins or so dancefloor tailed off a bit though think was due to rare soul fatigue, as so much quality was dished out Derek Allen - Last time caught him think was down 100 club on return to uk about 3 year ago he was Mr Enthusiastic, dancing, singing, and can remember a great set this time, seemed to be lot more subdued and so did his plays Paul Baldwin - Great balanced set, he started off with a couple of classy floorfilling revivals, which went down well but had us thinking in for oldies session but then just dropped in Sonatas - Going Down The Road and then Montclairs dead casual like, and carried on with intelligent mixing, gotta be a winning formula as seemed to unify the crowd Roger Banks - Just caught brief bit of spot seemed normal quality worthwhile set Bob Hinsley -As always a great set Charisma Band, Bobby Rich and more classy 70s balanced with top 60s rare floorfillers Kerry L - Memory says mainly classic oldies Sam Moore - inc some uplifting r+b Little Scotty- Missed most Brian Rae - Finishing set and a lot different from last time here with some great choices of little heard and some first hear to me oldies Modern - Didnt spend as long as last time as main hall was a lot better this time, Liberation being the brand name with Roger Williams running the show, djs inc Mark Randle, Steve Aggasild and more. To me modern is a complete different kettle of fish nowadays and feel am not really the man to do justice to a review of the room, and not really fair just doing it by popping in every now and again, all I say is there was a fair few in there, dont think as packed as remember last one, dancefloor busy, crowd always seemed to be well enjoying themselves. So djs were doing the works, did hear some classy stuff. So I would consider it a job well done, of course if you were one of the many in there who were having a top time and want to give a more "informative" view feel free to send it in. Overall View- mix current and oldies, 50/50 may be fair guess, but what was good to hear was some thought going into some of the oldies set, a fair amount of interesting revivals, that did the job and got the floor busy, with not many groans of not that bloody record again that follow some "top" djs . Though thinking starting a Jackie Wilson Because of you Free award as cant remember not hearing it at a venue:) Current rarities, well many ultra rare and just plain normal rare quality sounds were dished out. Though gotta say never agree with total ban on repetition, but was a hell of a lot of it tonite, Cashmeres, Sugar and Spice were two of many that got repeated, sure some were played up to 3 times. Lot of R+B dished out ranging from current popular ones to bit more obscure. Odds: no lengthy detailed playlists as well busy but one r+b wise heard a great more up todate version of Lillians Offitt - Miss you so - sort of takes the happy days feel out of it and gives it more solid 60s r+b feel that works well and better to me.Ted Taylor on Ronn being the one to look for. Since found has in past been popular mod spin. End of story - a most enjoyable niter, better than last one in my view, myself would have prefered some of the well known oldies to have be given a rest, but one mans poison..... think the mix worked well with the crowd and a good balance and nite for all was achieved. As always just my own and others personal view of things, feel different? Well dont start moaning at me ...just use that submit button!
