From : cogden5468@aol.com Ive just been on the Johnny Vaughans Web Site, if you havent seen it he has a part called "Johnny Vaughans Northern Soul Patrol" where 5 blokes turn up to anywhere in the country, they roll out a piece of LINO and cover it in talc, they proceed to play a bangin Northern track while dancing around, after the track is half way through they stop the music and just pack up there stuff and leave without saying a word, (youve got to see it to believe it). Ive got most of the ones they have played, eg. Spencer Wiggins Lets Talk It Over and Little Ann Who Are You Trying To Fool. But I have heard another track I think its called "Sweet Talking Daddy or Real Talking Daddy" or something like that, can you help me? Cheers Disco Fever. By the way Johnny Vaughans new show starts on Monday Night and he has brought back the Northern Soul. Watch it its worth it!!!!!!!!!!!

Former Motown Artist Barbara Randolph Sad News

FORMER MOTOWN ARTIST BARBARA RANDOLPH DIES The below was posted up on the soulful detroit forum (link in links) and on Motown Alumni Association list I am deeply saddened to inform you all off the death of Barbara Randolph on July 15th. In an effort to re-establish contact with her for the Tammi Terrell project I sent a mail, via a friend, to Eddie Singleton in South Africa and this news has just been relayed to me. I have no idea of the circumstances and am feeling quite shocked right now. She was such a young woman and I really cant begin to imagine what happened. I will talk to Eddie at some point & let you all know. This is just another tragic reminder of how fragile life is. My memories of meeting and knowing her are happy ones & that is how I will keep her in my heart Andrew Rix MAA reporter: Rick A. Bueche The Motown Alumni Association has sadly learned of the passing of Barbara Randolph. It was reported that Miss Randolph died July 15. At this time there are no other details. After a stint with The Platters, Berry Gordy signed Barbara Randolph to the Motown label in the mid 60s. The daughter of actress Lillian Randolph ("Roots"), Barbara was selected for her natural beauty and fine singing voice. In 1967, Gordy was preparing Randolph for possibly replacing Florence Ballard of The Supremes. When Diana Ross rejected this, Randolph began recording as a solo artist. She is best known for her fiery rendition of Holland-Dozier-Hollands "I Got A Feeling." Since its 1968 release, this song has become a dance and Northern Soul classic and appears on several recent Motown compilations. She also recorded a remake of Marvin Gayes "Can I Get A Witness." After leaving Motown in the early 70s, she cut tracks for several labels but made a small comeback in the UK on Ian Levines MotorCity label where she was finally given an album release. MAA sends condolences to the fans and family of Barbara Randolph

Yorkshire Riders Halifax Aug - Look and Plays

Have to say, had a another enjoyable nite out at that Yorkshire Riders event in Halifax industrial estate A fair few of us did the journey across and at end all gave it a very big thumbs up.With fresh sounds and a good friendly feel to the whole nite, had a great time. Though would be appreciated by some if could move it to a nite with no niter after read more for rest of view and plays Must be something about Halifax, getting there and the event are great,it all goes to #### once you try and get out! Last month after leaving, ended up in bradford instead of blackburn, add a speeding fine and then also a lost credit card ouch! Well on event, numbers wise fair few , 3 figures I reckon, not as many as last time, but dont think was other event on close by then. As Shirley say was a fair few travellers and I noticed that a fair few were at last one, so that was good to see and bit of proof that becoming a solid nite DJ wise, think we caught end of regulars Alex Jones and got to say that every spot heard him do this year has been a good one, with always a fair few "whats that" spins for me. Bit funny looking at playlists later on as dont always match the view you had on the night, know what I mean, anyway on nite view was two great sets by the guests, think the "no policy is our policy" thing is definitely worthwhile and got to say seemed that the two guests, Robbo and Bob H thrived on it, with avoiding the safe options, Lot of theorys going round in various conversation, one was "f*ck the dance floor" Cut it short, saying if someone walked in this event and judged nite on the dancefloor, would just call it an average nite as dance floor wasnt chokka But then if someone else come in and went round asking what the punters sitting down thought of the sounds, well then would get called a very good night. On guests plays, had to laugh a few times on night, ( in a good humoured way ) as ever so often when looking around one of the team would pop up, next to decks, at back etc with notebook out scribbling furiously! It was like a "Wheres Waldo" for trainspotters. :). On plays, think you missed the great Ujimas Im not ready - epic, off Bob H, would have told you, but its one of those words that cant get my mouth around, and last time tried to say it was almost stampeded by a herd of rhinos. * one was on ebay recently - anyone catch what it went for?? Voted the most "refreshing, " 45 of the night was "Eugene Jefferson - Pretty girl dressed in brown" which had us all smiling, and singing along, and left me with a yearning to hear "church going girl". Also the bloody soul twins ? "bloody" cause that was 3rd time in last 3 events its been played, surely not a new lease of life, * Robbo finished with a 70s tune, which he gave a big intro, it was called "mr *******?" by a one name guy something like leon or similar. Anyone know details??? Claimed it would be the next "messing with your mind", mmm didnt really ring any bells on first hear, Think Guy was on next, now think in last 6-8 weeks have heard Guy about 5 times, though was thinking may be getting a bit too familiar, but neednt have bothered worrying, as came out with a fair few different spins than last time, and must have been good as they had a effect on Stevie T to make him punch the air then clap a few times:) Again top stuff and seemed all enjoyed. Think Guy did up to finish,? Think one thing that puts event in perspective was that even though there was a niter close by , to us lot, this was the main event.of weekend and the niter was just a after thought. Highly recommended, Just to finish will say if listening to quality soul rare soul is your bag. and enjoy nites run by soul fans, whos sole aim is to just help push out quality rare soul. Well this is it, more than likely will have read reviews of previous nites , after few hiccups, have had a few solid nights, and myself reckon on its a good one Sheridans was next stop, well as rear vehicle in a 3 vehicle convoy, so no chance of getting lost. One hour later we were all in deserted Dewsbury town centre trying to pay a taxi driver to go to Sheridans so we could follow. Walked in to catch King M - I got the feeling spun by Soul Sam which was a good start Then spent a few hours in bar/modern area just cracking on.With Arthur Fenn and then Soul Sam doing modern modern style Had to laugh as Mr Day was being flogged by all place, even had it on sale at cafe bit. Left round 6-7 ish, not really there long enough to give it a fair view Ripped from Shirley here's playlist from riders Colin Wood & John Purvis Collections & Civics - Ill be there Magnetics - When Im with my baby Walter Scott - Brand new girl Willie & The Hand Jives - Gotta find a new love Matt Lucas - You better go go Pretenders - I wanna be Derek Martin - Breakaway Susan Coleman - Age of the wolf Jades - Hotter than fire Delfonics - Youll get enough Vows - Tell me Objectives - Love went away Gene Chandler - From day to day Little Sonny - No compromise c/u Tommy Tucker - Thats how much Willie Hutch - Cant fight the power Eddie Engel The Avons - Since I met you baby Steve Tyrell - A boy without a girl Herman Lewis - Whos kissing you tonight Azie Mortimer - You cant take it away Joey DeLorenzo - I lost my sense of direction Minnie Jones - Shadow of a memory Little Foxes - So glad you dont change Volumes - That same old feeling Calvin Williams - Lonely youll be Dottie & Millie - Talkin about my baby Little Tommy - Baby cant you see Little Johnny Hamilton - Oh how I love you Chalfontes - He loves me Trends - Thats how I like it Alex Jones Holly Maxwell - Dont say you love me Emory & The Dynamics - Take a look at our life Soul Set - Will you ever learn Delegates of Soul - Ill come running back Jesse Davis - Hang on in there girl Passions - If you see my baby Gerri Taylor - Im satisfied with your love Moonlighters - Lonely baby Gentlemen Four - You cant keep a good man down Tokays - Baby Baby Baby Clarence Townsend - I found a love Servicemen - ~Are you angry Agents - Trouble Earnest Mosely - Stubborn heart Morris Chestnut - Too darn soulful Robbo Bunny Sigler - For crying out loud Lewis Clark - I need you lovin so bad Luther Ingram - Run for your life Clarence Hill - Lotta love going round Joe Matthews - Aint nothing you can do Volumes - I aint gonna give you up Tobi Lark - Sweep it out the shed Paul Sindab - I was a fool Exits - You got to have money Major Harris - Call me tomorrow Soul Twins - Give the man a chance Tangeers - Let my heart and soul be free Bill Bush - Im waiting Reetha Reeves - Only lies Eugene Jefferson - Pretty girl dressed in brown Adorables - Ooh boy Johnny McCall - You cant get away Ellusions - You didnt have to leave Jellybeans - You dont mean me no good Eddie Hill - You got the best of me Charades - Key to my happiness Bob Hinsley Betty Wilson - Im yours Trannels - Blessed with a love Betty Lloyd - Im catching on Tommy Turner - Lazy Embers - First time Vanguards - Good times bad times Choice of Colour - Your love Cant remember title or artist for this one except to say it has the hook "look into my eyes" - can anyone name this one? Johnny Robinson - Shes gone but not forgotten Gambrells - You better move Guy Hennigan Apocryphals - Im losing you Lord Thunder - Chaos Detroit Rhythm Section - Back street Dream Masters - Lonely Lonely Eddie Ray - Glad I found you Anthony & The Delsonics - Every time Martha Valez - Bud Harper - Wherever you were Monroe Taylor - Proud guy Hayes Cotton - Black wings has my angel Irma & The Fascinators - You need love Joys of Life - Good times are over Johnny Gibson - Come on and let me know As usual any errors or omissions in the above playlists are of my own making and do not in any way reflect on the integrity of the promoters of the Rider Club - just that they were "too busy" (at the bar, refreshment and record - in other words couldnt be arsed to pick up a pen and write the tracks down themselves) Hope to see you next time - Saturday 14th September for another top soulful night when the guests will be Chris "Rochdale Cowboy" Shepherd & Andy "Bulldog" Dyson. Miss this at your peril. Shirley Stewart.

Llandudno Risboro 16 Aug look back

The second Soul nite at the renewed monthly soul nites at the Risboro hotel went well, Numbers were up on the last one, coming up close to 100 odd. A fair mixed crowd, from all over north wales coast and beyond, ranging from regular event goers to faces that havent seen for a fair while. Floor wise things didnt really get going to later on, and then it seemed that the best reaction was to well known familar stuff. Small Paul was guest, regular djs being Steve Thomas, Mark Speakman, Chico and meself, rotating slots each one. Have top 5s to throw up. once find them :-) :-) Next one is on Sep 13 guest being Phil B Thanks to all for the card, nice one

		Broughton Wings Club

Had a good night last saturday at Broughton, an old face from many years ago appeared through the door in the guise of John "Jacko" Jackson AKA the fighting Postman from Rhyl.a few people havnt seen him for over 26 years and it was nice to see Mark Speakmans face, and Garry Beatties, when jacko tapped them on the shoulder !! I used to go to Wigan with Jacko, and Ritchie "pants" Andrews who also made an appearance - (lovely to see you again mate ),along with Wuffer, Joey Dunlop, to name but a few. I stopped going to wigan in 78 and never saw jacko again until 2AM one morning in 1982 8,000 miles away from home in San Carlos Bay Falkland Islands -we were two hours away from landing on Blue Beach at 0400 hrs Zulu time and the battle for the Falklands was about to commence. I went into the messroom to get a last brew and a bite to eat-the place was packed with Marines all doing the same -having a last bite-when I spied him, big ugly git with a buttie stuffed in his gob Johhnie Jackson !! what the fu*k was he doing here?? We had both left the soul scene and joined up and of all the ships down there me and jacko ended up bumping into each other. (we nearly ended up getting buried together) We both shared a taste of hell together down there, and neither of us will forget it, nor the mates we left behind. Now 20 years on I have hooked up with him again -Jacko lives in bridgwater Somerset- he works for the benefits agency now, and Geoff Hollis is a dog warden down there !!! I am going to cala grand with jacko and geoff and his missus in october so may see some of you there. Hope the Springfield venue is a success, see you all there . Birchfield Soul Nite - Widnes Lookback

Birchfield Soul Nite - Widnes Well after last weekend, was half expecting a fairly mellow Friday nite. That was a mistake. Birchfield Recreation Club was the place and their monthly soul nite the event. Always on our regular list and always a fair old few make it across the border and the Mersey from the homeland. Our usual car load was dmsc co-thingy Steve T , Bangor Social Johnnie J, Hef and meself. After so many visits have finally sorted widnes traffic system out, and for once got there fairly early for us, say for us, cause as always missed the freebie, which was a very decent cd. Venue is in the sort of club house - you know the sort next to a football pitch, though a fairly big building, with half being a social club type bar and the other half event place, a fair sized floor, seats and tables round it, a busy bar at one end, espically busy at the 9.30-1030 £1 a pint hour. Normal 3 quid in, the end of night around 1 am, though no bar extension. Sounds wise, well the team of three Dave Truscott, Chris Penn and Biff do a great job here. And while they do look after all tastes, the main thrust to me is of quality, covering all styles, in a well good flow All know the usual pitfalls many soul nites can end up on, but gotta say no danger of that here, while normally a fairly mixed crowd, its always an good mixed crowd that responds to all the music. None of this "dont know it so must be crap", or people moaning cause they have to put up with a few records thats not their bag, everyone seems to just go there, have a good time and enjoy the music whether it be current venue plays, like Mack Starr, Ruby Jean, current popular floorfillers like Harvey and Jokers , R and B style sesions, 6ts sax jams, modern or well known classics. Reaction no matter what the style is always good, that to me along with the feel and the way they do the music makes this nite a regular return. The guest to-nite was a certain Steve Thomas, mentioned before, whos bookings diary is fast becoming a uk event guide and even got a few other signing ups on nite. Well he seemed to go down very well, keeping with the style and the feel, pushed out a great mix, one highlight bit to me was houston outlaws followed by delegates of soul, which worked well sing a long time or what. To his credit after someone requested a certain 45, which he didnt have with him, then when strangely enough he started getting quite a fair few requests for that very same 45, he dealt with all in a very professional and courteous style. Will leave it up to Steve to post up some of his interesting plays, though he said afterwards that he had many requests for that Marv Johnson UA track, Anyway a well enjoyable nite, think place was full at some stage as the "no entry - full " signs were out and about So for me, hats off to the team of three, if you are after a well friendly nite, with a crowd just into enjoying all styles of soul, get along, we always enjoy it and know many others do. May not hear a lot in press about this one, but that "full " sign, a fair few travellers, appreciative crowd and that after feel of a right old good nite out, just proves that no matter what occurs in the so called limelight, clubs like this are just getting on with things and soul fans are out having a right old good time and just enjoying the soul music. Nice one Next one with guest Carl Willingham, 26 July - seems like its going to be another "cant miss event" website - www.birchfieldpark.fanspace.com - sounds, info and all the gear 5 from Steve thomas t ed taylor -look out -top rank big dons rebillion-it was true-ethon enchantments -i,m in love with your daughter-faro sound masters- lonley lonley=julet delegates of soul-i,ll come running back-uplook
