BBC: Paid in Full: The Battle for Black Music - 3 Part Docuseries
Paid in Full: The Battle for Black Music News about a new three-part documentary series titled 'Paid in Full: The Battle for Black Music' which premieres 21 September 2024 on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer 'Paid In Full: The Battle for Black Music explores the systemic racism faced by Black artists in the music industry from its inception to the digital streaming age.' Press notes below.... From executive producers Idris and Sabrina Elba, alongside Greg Sanderson of Supercollider and Julie Bristow of Catalyst, for national public broadcasters CBC and BBC, a new three-part documentary series Paid In Full: The Battle for Black Music explores the systemic racism faced by Black artists in the music industry from its inception to the digital streaming age. Despite remarkable success stories, prejudicial practices persist in the machinery of the music industry, with exploitative contracts and copyright arrangements often hindering artists' autonomy and financial reward and coming with a devastating personal cost. The series is narrated in Canada by music icon Jully Black and features interviews with Black titans of the music industry Cadence Weapon, Chaka Khan, George Clinton, Monie Love, Nile Rodgers, Gloria Gaynor, Ice T, Master P, and Smokey Robinson, as well as music experts and industry insiders. The series is narrated in the UK by British actress and playwright Zawe Ashton. In Canada, all episodes of Paid In Full: The Battle for Black Music will be available to stream on CBC Gem beginning Saturday 21 September. In the UK, the first episode will air on BBC Two on Saturday 21 September and will be available to stream as a box set on BBC iPlayer afterwards. The second and third episodes will air on Saturday 28 September. Paid In Full: The Battle for Black Music documents the extent of the historic injustice suffered by the music industry’s Black artists, including the disparity of profits received by them, despite having created the records that have driven the fabric and culture of popular music - from jazz and rock and roll to soul and rap. The first episode delves into the stories of trailblazing artists like Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, who used their music to challenge societal norms, and confronts the harsh realities faced by legends such as Bessie Smith, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry, who struggled for fair compensation despite their groundbreaking contributions. The second episode highlights the emergence of Black-owned labels like Motown, Stax Records, and Def Jam, which shaped the industry while facing their own challenges. Despite celebrating Black culture, these labels sometimes adopted exploitative practices reminiscent of larger, white-owned counterparts. Event: Keele All-nighter Review: 5 stars by Geeselad. Event Date: 31 Aug 2024 Its been great to watch this event build steadily over the last 18 months, last Saturday, however saw Keele with a very busy dancefloor and a real buzz about it once more. Proceedings were kicked off by jez Jones, who delivered a great set full of lesser known oldies and underplayed gems. Alan Jenkins, Fred Benson and of course Ted Massey brought our the big guns with a top selection of rare classics. In contrast Johnny beggs followed with a... Tap to view the full event review

Event Review: Keele All-nighter
Event: Keele All-nighter Review: 5 stars by Pep. Event Date: 31 Aug 2024 Another excellent night which fulfilled all expectations music-wise. Strangely it was a little slower than usual at the start, but this suddenly changed with a rush of people around 9.30pm. I put this down to the fair one-price-all-night policy (£12), rather than the former two tier pricing. Anyway none of the DJs disappointed. Jez Jones commenced proceedings with a great set of classics and underplayed gems. Alan Jenkins followed wi... Tap to view the full event review

Event: Keele All-nighter Review: 4 stars by Longin The Tooth. Event Date: 31 Aug 2024 So this weeks adventure was Keele All Nighter. I was a little apprehensive as I heard that the last event was low on numbers. How would it pan out? We arrived before 8 along with some other soulies. Upon entering from 8 until about 9:30 there didnt seem to be the expected numbers, but there was a sudden rash of punters coming into the main room. Boy there were in for a treat. From 8 onwards the music did not disappoint and all of the DJs played ... Tap to view the full event review

Event Review: Grimsargh Village Hall
Event: Grimsargh Village Hall Review: 5 stars by Busybee-gd. Event Date: 31 Aug 2024 Wow another cracking night at Grimsargh. Music from all Djs was spot on. No top 100 at this club, just mostly underplayed and quality music. What a refreshing change. The club itself is run by such friendly people and the bring your own drinks is great, saves a lot of money and queuing at the bar! Snacks provided at the tables was a nice gesture. Would definitely recommend a visit. Well done to all involved ... Tap to view the full event review

Portobello Beat - Exhibition Celebrating North Kensington’s Pioneering Record Shops
Portobello Beat ((1884 to 2024)) (An Exhibition Celebrating North Kensington’s Pioneering Record Shops) For one week only: Free Entry 6 Thorpe Close W10 5XA (opening hours 1st till 7th September 2024 12 till 8PM) This exhibition covers an area focused around Portobello Road, once amongst the most important music trading hubs in London (if not the world). Exhibition aims to celebrate the record shops that made an impact – Portobello Beat’s shops set up chains and record labels and made things happen. It was here that Trojan Records – the label that launched Jamaican music in the UK (and beyond) – was founded via a record shop called Musicland in 1966. Musicland went on to be a London-based chain of record shops, specialising in US imports - both soul and blues and underground rock albums. The success of Musicland and its black music specialist offshoot, Muzik City, ensured that the Notting Hill/Ladbroke Grove area became a hub for record shops and labels. Geoff Travis opened Rough Trade in the Grove in 1976 and this pioneering emporium quickly became amongst the very first punk specialist record shops – Rough Trade launched Rough Trade Records, home to the Smiths and Lankum (amongst many others). Rough Trade is now an international chain of record shops and a now separate but equally celebrated record label: both continue to trade in Ladbroke Grove. The seeds for Ace Records, the label that gave the world both Motorhead and reissues of rare rockabilly and soul records, germinated at Rock On’s record stall in Golborne Road’s covered market. Today, Honest Jon's continues to trade as both a shop and label. For more than 50 years Music & Video Exchange has generated feelings of loathing and liking depending on how well you do on exchange (and who is serving you). Virgin Records was long based in the Grove (with one of their most popular hippie shops in Notting Hill). Tributaries off the Portobello Road led to shops like Dub Vendor, Second Hand Music, The Calypso Shop, Plastic Passion, All Change Records and People’s Sounds. And many more! Come along to Portobello Beat and experience the history of these streets’ record shops. And share your memories. This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Dave Hucker, a local lad whose passion for music, record shops and Ladbroke Grove illuminated his and many others lives. Portobello Beat is curated and sourced by the British Record Shop Archive, a hub for info’ & images on the emporiums that once stocked the music that changed your life. https://www.britishrecordshoparchive.org/ (contribute your memories/donate to support)
