  2. Much talked about track 'Love And Hate In A Different Time' by the Gabriels is finally out on release on 45 Release/Press notes follow below Gabriels - Love And Hate In A Different Time / Spanish Harlem - Atlas Artists / Parlophone For the first time, ‘Love & Hate In A Different Time’ is now getting a special 7 Inch release with a previously unreleased live version ... In 2021, Los Angeles trio Gabriels arrived in a whirlwind with the loose-limbed vintage soul jam of ‘Love & Hate In A Different Time’, a song that could have dropped in almost any era. A stone-cold classic, it introduced a band so much more than just the sum of their supremely talented parts. For the first time, ‘Love & Hate In A Different Time’ is now getting a special 7 Inch release with a previously unreleased live version of ‘Spanish Harlem’ recorded at BBC Maida Vale studios for a Gilles Peterson 6 Music session. Just a handful of live shows deep, the spotlight swings and lands squarely on vocalist Jacob Lusk. A man who demands attention with a presence and voice of a gospel choir. That rich vocal swoops and soars through the pitches effortlessly matched by an on-stage persona that’s intensely likeable. A bonafide star by anybody’s reckoning. Two acclaimed EPs deep and yet barely out of second gear, Gabriels have moved beyond mere promise to become one of 2022’s most essential new acts. 18. Eccentric Soul 7" Bundle 2022 Numero Group have announced a new 7 inch bundle, priced £26 plus shipping for the three, the make up of this bundle is based on user demand, details follow Eccentric Soul 7" Bundle It's been about a year since our last Eccentric Soul 7" Bundle drop but since we are kind of on an Eccentric Roll, timing feels appropriate. All 3 are projects that many have asked about. We keep a loose informal tally of vinyl requests and these 3 are currently at the top of the heap. Cheryl Glasgow - Glued To The Spot b/w Instrumental Cheryl Glasgow was a major drop for us at the top of last year. Top 5 for me for sure. Vibey Boogie meets Street Soul at it's finest. An absolute ear-worm from its first nylon strums, Glasgow’s Sade-adjacent, jazz vocalese sweeps into a warm-up tempo groove and never quite breaks a sweat. Issued on Ross Anderson’s short-lived, London-based Live label, “Glued To The Spot” swept through the club scene briefly in 1987, disembarking for warmer shores when the season changed. Dan Boadi - Money Is The Root Of Evil b/w Duodu Wuo Ye Ya Chicagoland by way of Ghana's own Dan Boadi and the African Internationals gets part 2 of the bundle. Originally released in 1997, we re-released their Money Is The Root Of Evil album in 2020. Recorded at Paul Serrano’s namesake studio on E. 23rd St. in Chicago, Boadi’s U.S. debut showcased the true scope of his musical range; weaving in and out of funk, highlife, afrobeat, and reggae. The title track immediately demands the listener’s attention with a chugging drum lead by The African International’s King Tuch, setting the pace for Boadi’s colorful orchestration to follow. Money Is The Root of Evil claims it’s own space as a musical melting pot and reflects the excitement Boadi was learning to harness as a musician in his newfound home of Chicago. We've trimmed and edited the sprawling 7+ Min originals to get the best bits ripe for dance floors, club or living room. Junei' - Let's Ride (Original Version) b/w You Must Go On And finally this major statement piece from Gary, Indiana's Junei'. Willie “Junei” Lee spent the first half of the 1970s playing guitar with his older brother Robert Lee in the self-contained band Lost Weekend, recording a handful of singles and a still unreleased LP. The back half of the decade was spent touring with Albert King, Curtis Mayfield, and The Emotions, before returning home to focus on his own sound. In 1985, Junei’s girlfriend brought home a suite of Fostex home studio gear, including a 12 channel board, 8-track tape machine, and a halftrack for mix downs. He added a Yamaha drum machine and a Maestro echoplex and started his solo project. “The only artists I listened to was Hendrix and Santana,” Junei said. The emissions coming from his home studio were entirely different, however, as “Let’s Ride” channels the Euro sensibilities of Kraftwerk or Italo over virtuosic guitar. “I just didn’t want to sound like anyone else,” he continued. “Let’s Ride” achieved that differentiation, and managed to anticipate Chicago house by a few years. Pressed in minuscule numbers in 1987 on Pharaohs Records, the 45 never connected with the nearby scenes in Chicago and Detroit where it might have found purchase in fertile soils. Decades later “Let’s Ride” found new life as the bed for KAYTRANADA’s “Scared To Death,” and the track has slowly worked its way through the algorithm to a new generation of vapor huffers. “I am all for experimentation, trying new things, etc,” Junei said. “Kaytranada is a visionary and a talented producer. He has my respect.” In addition to the bundle, check out the single's available in Color, Clear or Black Wax. Bonus Content: The sleeves art for these was done by Eliza Weber who also did the design work for The Chicago Boogie Volume 3 around the illustration from Ben Marcus, who also did Volume 2 and a very rare Numero T-Shirt that I can't even find a picture of. Eliza's band Tobacco City has also ripped a killer cover of Female Species - Till The Moon Don't Shine which can be heard over at Aquarium Drunkard with some more nice TC cuts. 23. Book: A Panthers Story - Storia Di Una Pantera by Alberto Zanini View full article
  24. News and preview of a new book by Alberto Zanini from Tesla Groove TALES FROM THE TIME CAPSULE Finally done. Following up on Funk Investigators, although no longer with an autobiographical slant but as a real journalistic novel, was not easy task. I hope you will enjoy reading it at least as much as I enjoyed writing it, although I would have preferred to do it in a less complicated period of my life. I am also happy to announce that, in the coming months, both books Funk Investigators and A Panther's Story will also be published in Spain by Colectivo Bruxista, the most eclectic and underground publishing house in the Country. Thanks to Carlo Babando (of Blackness fame) for the superb preface. "A Panther's Story" is dedicated to my father, my children and my brothers and sisters (you know who you are). It is also dedicated to liars. There ain't no hole deep enough. Scroll down for excerpts from both Italian and English editions A PANTHER'S STORY English Edition Hardback - 360 pp. A Panther on the run. Hunted down by J. Edgar Hoover's Special Agents over one of the most turbulent years in recent American history. Dirty cops, mobsters, civil rights activists, street gangsters, investigative journalists and secret services from Nations afar intertwine in a time capsule on which the Funk Investigators are called to shed a light once again. Excerpt Chapter I Jalon Perry & The DeVonne Brothers Harlem, April 1969 Jalon Perry was sad to leave New York in a hurry in spring, the most beautiful season for that city, but there was nothing he could do about it. He would have to do without the light green of the first leaves on Mount Morris' oaks and the darker one of the new ivy at St. Nicholas Park. No more spliffs while watching kids shooting basketball at the Rucker Playground. Worst thing was, due to the pace with which events chased each other, he could not even stop by one last time to say adiós, to those places. To promise them he'd be back. The day before the police stormed the Party’s headquarters, a tip came from a copper who the DeVonne Brothers used to bribe. They imported to the hood some special heroin from Southeast Asia and had run the city's largest clandestine betting ring for decades, the so-called Numbers, so they were always craving for information and protection. That tip was bad news. Jalon could not allow himself to waver while waiting for them to be confirmed by facts. Not that he was guilty of anything, not anything he had done or anything the cops thought he was going to do, but in those tense times there was no need to actually be guilty. If you were a member of the Black Panthers the cops wanted to arrest, they would have set you up and make it to prove your guilt by all means available. To make certain and demonstrable facts that never happened. So it was better to disappear, and quickly. The copper's mind wasn't bright about what was going on in those days. He said that strange people were over at 28th Precinct, up in Manhattan North. Folks you’d never seen before, going back and forth from Captain’s office in cheap gray suits instead of standard issue blue uniforms, plotting diagrams on large urban maps of the hood, wide open on the meeting room’s table. Maps of Harlem with notes and symbols scribbled on 7th Avenue and 141st Street, exactly where the Black Panther’s chapter of New York had office. Established just a year earlier, it was among the younger sections of the Party and its ranks had rapidly grown to make it one of the most important branches in the entire nation. The members had increased exponentially just when the hostilities with security forces had turned in what Jalon Perry and his crew called a real guerrilla. The murders of Malcolm X in '65 right there in Harlem, of Martin Luther King in April of '68 down in Memphis and, two days later, that of Bobby Hutton of the Oakland Panthers had done nothing but increase the fear and the level of self-awareness in all black communities of America. The Black Panthers were taking... © 2022 - Alberto Zanini - All Rights Reserved Want more? Preorder Now STORIA DI UNA PANTERA Edizione in Italiano Brossura - 360 pp. Una Pantera in fuga. A rendere certi e dimostrabili fatti mai avvenuti. © 2022 - Alberto Zanini - All Rights Reserved Want more?
