Grip of Soul
I did say I would list some long players for a while, but I’m back tracking with some sumptuous 45’s up for grabs! Happy to send sound files on request, PM to ask questions or reserve. SOLD Johnny Wyatt – This thing called love – Bronco 2052 WD Ex £150 SOLD (Real soul deal, slick, smooth and sensational, what a mover. Rarer demo copy. Not for sale blanked out) O.C. Smith – On easy street – Columbia 43809 M- £200 (Gorgeous tune and a floater for the less energetic on the dance floor. Much harder to find on the red stock label. Immaculate surface, just a sticker mark on the flip that you’re not gonna look at at) SOLD Betty Boo – Say it isn’t so – Grapevine 125 M- £125 SOLD (Fantastic slab of femme Soul, and unless you’re the lucky beggar with the RCA acetate this is the only way the masses were ever to be satisfied) SOLD Irma Thomas – What are you trying to do – Imperial 66137 Ex £90 SOLD (This is the one to go full volume on in the car, stunning vocals and such catchy backing) Norma & Heartaches – Nice and slow – Joy Ride 1030 Ex- £375 (Rare original, brilliant, no, actually outstanding femme crossover, back with a different instrumental version “Harlem at sundown”, has some minor marks, plays Ex with minimal feedback) Otis Brown – Find somebody new – Lujuna 10655 Ex+ £150 (Chicago mid-tempo, how classy is this, laid back like his other Windy City releases, probably backed by the Soulettes on Dud-Sound, slight edge lift - DNAP) John Wesley – Love is such a funny thing – Melic 4195 M- Offers (Wow, full on northern dancer on Lee Youngs Hollywood label. Arthur Wright and Ernie Shelby involvement on this monster floor filler. So hard to find, incredible condition. Reluctant sale, so up for offers please, min £1500, will let it run until Thu 03 Nov at 8pm unless I get an offer I can’t refuse in between) SOLD Sidney Barnes – You’ll always be in style – Red Bird 10039 Ex £220 SOLD (All time classic powerhouse dancer, on the more desirable yellow stock label, decidedly harder than the demo. Soulful Long Players 2
ALL ON HOLD Changing tack away from 45s to let some great Soul albums go. I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but there are always hidden gems on every disc, unreleased on 45. This is part two, with a handful to follow over the next few days. Happy to provide more images of each item on request as the site limits upload capacity. Graded Cover / Vinyl, recordings in Mono (Mo) or Stereo (St). Message me to reserve or ask any questions. 1) Gene Chandler – Just be true – Constellation 1423 (Mo) M-/M- £40 Another big voice serves up a mix of slowies, mid and up-tempo beat tracks. Mayfield’s involvement a given on this Chicago release, however ‘Jobete’ the music publishing affiliate to Motown is leant on with fine covers of ‘Check yourself’ and ‘You threw a lucky punch’. A more tolerable (for me) play on Duke of Earl appears, but the winner is ‘Pretty little girl’ recorded in 63, written by Eugene Dixon, changing his name to Gene Chandler after his success with ‘Duke’, and co-written by George Smith who cut his version on Laurie, both collectable 45s on the scene 2) Tyrone Davis – Turn back the hands of time – Dakar 9027 (St) M-/M- £25 Ranked by MTV as one of the best Soul LPs of its time. Not surprising given the involvement of a list of Chicago’s who’s-who, household names like Jack Daniels, Johnny Moore, Don Davis, Carl Davis, Willie Henderson…. The list goes on, oh and the classy Bab’s Acklin and Eugene Record on some backing. So classy, the title track was included in the Hugh Grant & Julianne Moore romcom “Nine Months”. My old fave from Tyrone “I’ll be right there” just superb, and I just can’t quite place the backing track on “The waiting was not in vain”, sounds familiar? Original with small customs snip on pocket side and I removed the shrink wrap 3) Larry Santos – Just a man – Evolution 2002 (St) Vg+/Ex £20 Quite the talent, Larry was not only a singer songwriter, but he also won Grammy’s for some music hits and starred in Hot Fudge, a Detroit based kid’s puppet TV show (Mrs. Doubtfire-esque – LOL. The standout track here of course is the classic ‘You got me where you want me now’ played at the Casino in halcyon days. Support acts include ‘Comin up in the world’ and ‘Subway man’. Cover has fine scars and drill hole, vinyl very slight edge lift hence grade) 4) Freda Payne – How do you say I don`t love you anymore – MGM 4370 (St) M-/M- £25 Awfully long title for an LP! Classic sultry ‘it wasn’t me guv’ pose on cover, the sort my missus gives me when I see purchase notifications flash up from online fashion retailers on my devices. One of my all time favourites given an upbeat lease of life by Freda, ‘O.C. Smiths – On easy street just brilliant, backed up well by 'Sad sad September' and other solid vocal tracks. White flecks on vinyl image just dust I didn't wipe off! 5) The Platters – Going back to Detroit – Musicor 3125 (St) Ex/Ex+ £25 Like it says on the tin, a platter of delights. A fantastic LP, with some choice tunes, the title track, is so typically in the motor city groove, the imploring ‘Why do you want to make me blue’ is a delight, ‘Run while its dark’ with a hint of latin to my ears from an obscurer LA Entree label 45 release as Platters 65, clearly recognising the incarnations of the original group from 52, the tidy ‘With this ring’ and the LP only ‘I can’t get used to sharing you’. Great artwork on cover plus a Musicor inner sleeve. Minor wear on cover. PayPal by Friends or add 4% please, or I can send bank details. Postage: £5 - 1st Class Signed for (Insured to £50 only) £9 – Special Delivery (Fully Insured) No overseas on these, sorry Cheers, Lee

Soulful Long Players
Changing tack away from 45s to let some great Soul albums go. I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but there are always hidden gems on every disc, unreleased on 45. This is part one, with a handful to follow each night for a week or so. Happy to provide more images of each item on request as the site limits upload capacity. Graded Cover / Vinyl, recordings in Mono (Mo) or Stereo (St). Message me to reserve or ask any questions. 1) Incredibles – Heart & Soul – Audio Arts 7000 (St) M-/M- £30 Highly respected group flying high under the flag of this prized Hollywood label. Excuse the pun, but this incredible album is evenly split with a slower A and faster B side, no duffers on A, but B hosts the dance floor fillers ‘Miss treatment’ and ‘There’s nowt else to say’, backed up marvelously by the very collectable ‘Without a word’, ‘All of a sudden’ and ‘Another Dirty Deal’…..all brilliant. I can remember peeling the shrink wrap off this one, still in top condition 2) Archie Bell & Drells – I Can’t Stop Dancing – Atlantic 8204 (St) Ex-/M- £20 Sits in the shadows of the highly collectable ‘Tighten up’ album, but in both you’ll see the connections between their Houston roots, NY and Philly phases of their career. Gamble and Huff on any credits is nothing to be sniffed at. Is it me hearing similarities between the title track and ‘Harvey Averne – Never learned to dance?’ Don’t miss the snappy covers of Major Lance’s, Mayfield penned Monkey time and Sometimes I wonder…..upbeat party atmos throughout this disc. Cover graded lower for split on top edge, otherwise Ex 3) Jackie Wilson – Whispers – Brunswick 754122 (St) Ex-/M- £30 Whilst its debatable that JW has the best voice of the soul genre, IM-humble-O he had the most versatile voice in the business, outstanding vocals on everything he cut. Where do I start, well, rather than stating the obvious, I’ll simply reinforce that the quality of tracks on this slab of plastic is outstanding, that said 😊 a special note though for the brilliant 'My heart is calling'…..spine tingling 4) Jackie Wilson – Higher & Higher – Brunswick 54130 (Mo) M-/M- £40 Quality is amplified by the way in which JW makes every track sound like we’ve been listening to them as anthems on the scene for decades, but several of the titles on this disc are lesser known 45s or LP only gems. Special mention Jackie’s version of ‘Darrell Banks – Open the door to your heart’, possibly the most covered soul track in the world with over 10 covers I know of! 5) Esquires – Get on up and get away – Bunky 300 (St) M-/M- £30 Bill Sheppard and Tom-Tom have a hand in this clutch of fabulous group soul tracks, all cemented by exquisite harmonies. The title tracks are finger poppers, there’s a slick cover of the ‘Rascals – Groovin’ and Mill Evans – When I’m ready – Tou-Sea’, ‘Everybody’s laughing’ is a fine beat ballad, then the sublime ‘How could it be’ which nestles in some DJ spot alongside the biggest tunes in the land, and finally the supreme x-over dancer “My sweet baby” from the US Fat Back 45. Liner notes from E Rodney Jones, President of the National Association of TV and Radio Announcers no less! Value for money or what? Little cover dink on bottom right corner PayPal by Friends or add 4% please, or I can send bank details. Postage: £5 - 1st Class Signed for (Insured to £50 only) £9 – Special Delivery (Fully Insured) No overseas on these, sorry Cheers, Lee

The Gabriels at Glastonbury
To be honest Ted I don't pay much attention to current music, Northern has me in its grip 😂 and when I do its mixed, Jack Johnson, Mikah, Kylie (only joking bout her) and some others that will remain nameless so I don't embarrass myself further, but when I watched the Gabriels I was straight onto the style, brilliant, loved it. I thought some of their other tracks were better (marginally) than Love and Hate, but liked it too. I for one will pick up their CD release on Sep 30, but probably need to buy a CD player to get over the next hurdle 😧 Hope you're well ✊

Natural Four – I thought you were mine – ABC 11253 Ex+ £400 SOLD (The labels, as black labels doo show a few minor handling marks, this classic dancer plays beautifully) Soul Majestics – Missing you / I done told you baby – Chicago Music Bag 1001 M- £180 SOLD (Great double sider, nice mid-tempo on top side, and a fab low rider on flip) Maurice Williams – Being without you – Deesu 302 Ex+ £550 SOLD (Uptempo NOLA Dancer out of the Tou-Sea production team) Kelly & Soul Explosions – Talking about my baby’s love – Dynamite 110 Ex+ £1800 SOLD (Fantastic crossover dancer, highly rated) Frankie and Johnny – I’ll hold you – Hickory 1391 WD Ex £325 SOLD (Emphatic double act, far better than Ant & Dec, power along, minor marks on label) Ledgends – Fear not – Locket 756 Ex+ £100 (Chicago group soul, on the rarer 1st label, some light ring wear, edge lift does not affect play) Doni Burdick – Open the door to your heart – Sound Impression Records 6809 M- £100 SOLD (Deep red label is a clincher, all the signs of greatness, classic floor filler) Entertainers – Love in my heart – Symbol 212 WD Ex £150 SOLD (Brilliant group dancer, nice on demo, visually M-, just a few light pops from nothing I can see on the vinyl) David and Ruben (I lover so much) it hurts me – Warner Brothers 7316 Ex+ £350 (Khaki or olive-green label, either way it’s a stunner on the stock copy, belting Latin tinged Northern) PayPal by friends or add 4% please, or bank transfer. Sensational Little Doc Carolina
Had a few copies of baby, peaked at 350, and seems to have settled at 200-250 from what I've seen. Is the photo confirmed as Little Doc or are they the 2 footballers?

Handful of Soul
A short but high quality list. Sound files and additional images available if you want. PM and questions or to reserve. Doug Banks - I just kept on dancing - Argo 5483 DJ M- £300 SOLD (Fabulous oldie, Latin tinged brassy big voiced floor filler. Note the title is all on one line, a much less common variant with this design and it’s the rarer DJ copy for cream on the top, bell sound stamped of course) Dee Clark – That’s my girl - Constellation 113 Ex £100 (The way to own it, on the glistening starry label design, beautiful, light graze on surface DNAP, very minor edge lift) Anthony & Aqua Lads - I remember - Gold Bee 1650 Vg+ £200 SOLD (Carolina gem, some spots on topside label caused by fluid it seems, no detriment to the vinyl, but it does show signs of use with lines all over, BUT plays through with great clarity, probably Ex-, minor edge lift DNAP) Ward Burton - Sweet temptation - Panther 5 Ex £2000 (Smooth mid-tempo out of the Mark V Studio in Greenville. The vinyl is Ex and just short of M- with just the lightest storage marks, nothing in it really but trying to be conservative. The top side label shows some light ring wear, hence grading at Ex, but it plays very nicely indeed) David and Ruben - (I love her so much) It hurts me - Rampart 662 WD M- £600 (Made a decision, rightly or wrongly, to keep a Linda variant, apart from the blue stock copy this is the next rarest format, probably regret it !) Al Jarreau - Shake up - Raynard 10024 M- £750 (In terms of mainstream music Al was Royalty, in terms of the Northern scene, perhaps this is Al’s one and only Northern offering, and from intro to run off its a sparkling upbeat dance track that strikes a party vibe with quality vocals. Milwaukee release in tip top condition, a class act) Trade Martin – Work song – RCA 8926 M- £100 SOLD (Black stockers always nice for the collectors, tiny bubble on vinyl, light label wear as more easy to detect on the majority of black labels, does not affect playback) Showmen - You’re everything / Our love will grow - Swan 4219 WD Ex+ £175 SOLD (Great label that provides quite a lot of decent sides, this being a twofor, top class tunes both of them) PayPal by friends or add 4% please, or bank transfer. Postage: £3.25 - 1st Class Signed For (Only covers to £50) £7.65 - Special Delivery (Fully insured up to £500) £8.65 - Special Delivery (Fully insured up to £1000) £10.65 – Special Delivery (Fully Insured up to £2500) Overseas on Request Cheers, Lee
