  11. Part 2 of Europe and beyond.. The rare soul scene guide to whats on over the water.. Oslo Soul Experience Paid this place a visit in for the anniversary a few years back, another great time in a fantastic rooftop venue that overlooks the city, this venue is used for the Anniversary events.. A good mixed younger crowd, and a very healthy mix of sounds from 60s northern to modern soul.. The other guests on the night were James Trouble, Ian Wright and Marco, all gave the place a glowing report.. A quality overseas soul experience for me.. Feel free to add to this post if you have any experience of the event or need some info on events coming up/ travel details and places to stay... A brief guide to the Oslo soul experience from Tommy........ "Oslo Soul Experience was launched august 2003 and it's a monthly across the board soul club held in the basement pub of John Dee. Their goal is to serve up the very best in forgotten quality black soul music from the 60s, 70s and early 80s -Northern, crossover, modern, latin soul and funk. The guys behid the club is; Tommy SÃÆ’¸vik, GÃÆ’¸ran Sofienlund and BjÃÆ’¸rn Espen, all of them deep into collecting rare stuff on the 7inch format. The club has had a lot of guest Djs over the years where some of the «bigger» names was Ian Wright, Butch, Mick H, Marc Forrest and Matt Winegarden". Next dates on the regular nights in 2011..... 30th. of April, 28th. of May and 18th of June. The weekender where they celebrate the 8th anniversary is 2nd. and 3rd. of September, special guest DJ to be confirmed.. 12. Been wanting to feature whats on overseas for a long while.. Seems a good time now with Dave doing the overseas events guide.. I am gonna feature soul clubs and history from all over Europe and beyond... First up is the Gothenborg Soul Scene.. A brief history and what's on now from Punky who runs the Soulastatic club... Had the pleasure to go there and play in the past and in the future August event too I hope.. These articles can give an insight to whats on and a chance for some to plans breaks, holidays and take in some soul at the same time.. Europe And Beyond.. Gothenburg soul scene There was some scooter nights in the 80´s playing the soul/ska mix, but at that time funk was really big in Gothenburg (slipping in some soul as well) with clubs like Funk House, Funk nights at Huset and Nefertiti. In late 80´s early nineties Max Hansson, Paul Henningson and Sven Eric started the legendary Earland Club for a couple of years mixing all types of Soul with the then very popular Acid Jazz sounds. Then it was quiet for a while except for the odd mod/scooter night. Neftertiti kept on mixing Club Soul/Funk/Jazz through out the nineties. In feb 1998 Christian Punky and Isse Samie started northern club: Soulastatic Soul Club. Packed from first night, plaing Northern and after a few years adding some Modern Soul as well. Many djs that have been guesting the club over the years : Arthur Fenn, Ady Croasdel, Steve Cato, Carl Willingham, Ginger Taylor, Ralph Tee, Liam Quinn, Terry Davis, Kenny Burrell, Yann Vatiste, Marc Forrest, Tommy (Oslo), Phil Shields, Andy Whitmore, Andreas Dienel, Stuart Tyler, Max Soulservice (resident), Tolgerdt, Russel Paine and LOTS more, the list is long + swede soul mafia like Soulof, Baum, Helena, Marcus, Karl Marthon.. 2 weekenders a year (summer & winter), the club is still running (nowdays by Punky alone) and just celebrated its 13th year. Around year 2000 Christian Hermansson and Ludwig Hall started the On The Real Side Soul Club, and after a while Olof "Soulof" Hjort joined in. Mainly Northern spun, also having uk Dj guests like Dave Flynn, Willingham, Andy Dyson, Butch spinning + swede soul mafia. They also put on 2 very well attended Allnighters named Soul Unity 1 and 2 over the years, club ended around 2007/2008 (if im not wrong). 2009 Fredrik Andersson and Micke Balkefors launched the monthly mid-week nights, Soulful Lounge. Playing an ecclectic mix of modern and jazzy tunes. Still running. 2010 Great Shakes club started by Monourban. Once a month, mixing 6t´s soul with beat/garage. Still running. 2010 Ludwig Hall teamed up with BjÃÆ’¶rn and Magnus Hjorth to form Pied Piper Soul Club, monthly nights with Northern/Modern in its pipe, mainly swede guest Djs this far. In August 2011 Soulastatic Soul Club will run its annual summer nighters (5-6th of august) weekend. Djs Arthur Fenn and hopefully Steve Cato + more TBA Christian March 8, 2011 some past pics from the gallery more can be found here

  21. Just back home after the trip to London..Time for a good rest.. The night was what New Year should be...To spend time with freinds..Listen to the music you love and meet new folk with the same passion...Plus have a safe, warm and comfy venue.. Va Va Voom - New Years Eve All Nighter Lookback Got to the venue for about 9.30..Free parking right outside the door and nice folk on the door to answer any questions...Walked into the venue, reall nice ground floor with large enough bar, seating and dancefloor area..Walked upstairs to the northern room, smaller room, very smart with a dancefloor and djs down the bottom end...As the night really got going the upstairs room was very very busy with limited space to dance, many of the punters took the upstairs option..Nowt wrong with that really and they all spread out during the night...The crowd was 95% soulies from the uk and many from Europe too..A few strays too but that makes a party.. I knew the dj line up was strong before i bought my ticket...Quality djs/tunes on both floors from the start with no drop in standard to the end...Can't really pick between the djs, there was plenty tunes up my street from all...Loved the intimate feel upstairs, you could sit next to the djs, always good for checking tunes and having a chat with them, they don't give you the i am a dj so fu£k off look ,we all need each other to make a night.. Always good to see old freinds like Gareth,Nick,Hanna,Gina,Andy,Olof,Paul,Ady and met many new folk too..Nice to see people like French Fred, making the trip along with others from Japan,Italy,Sweden,Spain..Also Miles/Stuart T and few more members off here.. I like the music policy at Va Va Voom with the leaning to the rare side but not afraid to drop some classics in there too....It was about quality and not cost ,as Steve said cheapies played next to some very rare tunes indeed,a real mix of styles,Nothing on the flyer or dj line up to tell the punter any different. Top marks to Ady and Yan,it was a big gamble with other soul events in London but they seem to have a loyal hardcore who all help to spread the word and help promote the night, all nights need that kind of help..They wanted a rare soul night for people who live and breath it..Not fussed about making any cash as long as the club fee/djs and other costs where tucked away..when we count up the hours that go into putting on an event like this, you can see that it aint about the cash, they could have sold many more tickets to last minute punters phoning and looking for a late drinking option..They wanted to keep the space for a soul crowd.. Never easy to please all but i think most who came here knew what to expect,it was never gonna be a classic oldies soul night, that would have needed a bigger place and bigger dance floor..It was a night for quality rare tested tunes alongside tunes that had many coming to ask at the decks.. Beer was not marked up for New Year, pretty good for London prices, a decent cloak room, chill out area and good toilets.. The room upstairs was a little packed at times and fighting for space on the dancefloor but it did not take away from a really good way to see in the new year..I would jump at the chance of another helping of Va Va Voom... I speak as i see it..I am a punter and not some person with a vested interest in the night who would say nothing against a venue,we see too many reviews like that already .......I aint a mug,i paid my cash, 9 hours round trip and trusted Va Va Voom to deliver, they did that for me and my freinds..If there is a Va Va Voom next year then i would be looking to do the same again... We also took an American guy to Va Va Voom, his first ever day in England and never been to a northern night before,he was still there at the end and walked back to the tube with other punters,he loved the music, the people and the venue,so glad as it can be hell to have folk with you who aint having a good time and you are having a ball..Nice one Marvin,i think you have made some new friends already and will be back for some more next week.. All the best to you all for 2007..Keep it real and don't suffer fools for a second
