  1. I think the defining factor we are talking about in relation to this specific record (i.e. the broken one on eBay) is 'more money than sense' Cheers Richard
  2. The baggies, beer towels and circle skirts thing reminds me of the old Teddy Boy scene when that was probably on it's last legs and it was all looking a bit sad really. Baggy trousers, vests, beer bellies and bald heads ain't a great look  Cheers Richard
  3. Q. "I want to know what is worse" A. They are pretty much as bad as each other - both scenarios indicate that the two types of people you have described have 'issues'. Q. "Which of the two types of people do you think is more likely to win the record?" A. I think it depends on the individual circumstances of the auction, how much each person wants the record, what the records is, who else is bidding, and the price we are talking. In principle, both 'types' you have described have the possibility of winning. Richard
  4. Phil Rather than keep trying to justify what you did and why this was, a more credible response would be to try and keep a low profile and to reflect on what issues could have led to such an embarrassing course of action in the first place. You have withdrawn your bid, so you're no longer involved with the auction. It's also plain that some people on here have issues with how you're coming across about the whole thing. In view of the above, can I suggest any further debate about what you did or didn't do, and why this was, should now be considered 'off' topic'. Richard
  5. Bob Got to stick with Tony here. With the recession and the pure hardship many people in this country, and around this world, are going through, the fact that someone can bid $880 on a totally messed up record, and then have the brass balls to come on here and tell us all he didn't even really check the 45 before he bid, because he has plenty of cash in his Paypal account - and then say he was embarrassed as he messed up and wouldn't have bid if he had looked properly -and then have the pure cheek to withdraw his bid ... The guy is s total Phil Dick. Richard MODERATOR EDIT -- don't use foul language
  6. That's very decent of you old chap - everyone's a winner then Richard
  7. That's it Robb - exactly - the backing track isn't too bad - bit of a teaser as it could have been half-decent - but they had the chance and screwed it up all for vanity Cheers Richard
  8. Hi everyone The current thread on Margaret Little got me thinking about so-called 'vanity recordings'. I guess 'vanity recordings' probably fall into two categories: 1) Person sets up own label to release own song for 'vanity' purposes. 2) Another person releases someone else's recording for that other person's 'vanity' purposes. In general 'vanity recording' seems to be a derogatory term - the person can't sing, or has a bad song, but has enough money or the 'right' contacts so they can still put out a record. Here is an example of what I think is a 'vanity' release. Ray Bailey owned Bailey Records in Detroit - best known for a much better release by Gino Johnson. However, this one is pretty much rubbish - but then, it was his own label Got any others Soulsourcers? Cheers Richard Ray Bailey & United Five - Hollywood Part 1 (Bailey 8109 A) https://soundcloud.com/user1502162/ray-bailey-united-five
  9. Hi Rob Yes, it has the instrumental on the other side - fabulous track isn't it. Some people describe it as funk - but it sounds blues or at least R&B to me - whatever, it's top-drawer Imagine how cool and laid back the session would have been when they put the track down. Cheers Richard
  10. Yes, mate - that's what I mean. They record from an original record, not from tapes. I'm guessing with my suggestions above, but I would have thought it unlikely that master tapes could be available for many of the songs, especially those where there is a wide variety of tunes on various artists compilations that are not themed by labels. Cheers Richard
  11. And when it comes to the CD market aren't quite a few of the Goldmine/Soul Supply CDs done from discs - quite a lot I would have thought. Cheers Richard
  12. It's a good (and a straight) question mate Aren't quite a few of the Grapevine ones from the disc? Cheers Richard
  13. Now it's getting interesting. The high bid has been removed Now showing only 16 bids with the high bid at $630 (about £389). Phil - you better check it as you might be the high bidder again Cheers Richard
  14. Premium Stuff posted a post in a topic in Record Wants
    2p
  15. Don't know that one Carl - what is it mate (humorous answers only please)? Cheers Richard
  16. Interesting - so that would probably place him in Minnesota in between the Chess release and the Inter/Soul release (although, if the Inter/Soul release is identical then presumably that was just run off the original master tapes?). Cheers Richard
  17. Some great responses guys - thank you very much. I appreciate the time taken to reply with some very useful detailed analysis - especially as I thought my original post might be see as a 'daft question' in the first place. Looks like Mono is the one to go for then. Cheers Richard
  18. I have to say, I seriously doubt that was the case at all with the other bidders. There are 7 bidders and some of them have bid several times (automatic bids are not shown - only actual bids placed). I just can't believe anyone (perhaps with the exception of your good self) would place a bit of several hundred pounds on an eBay auction for a record which (regardless of Brad's very clear and honest written descriptions) has 6 good quality pictures right at the top of the listing - all of which show the record is very well used, and 3 of which show a large chunk of vinyl is missing. The pics were the very first thing I saw. Cheers Richard
  19. Might as well play that Detroit Stars reissue and show them the busted original Cheers Richard
  20. Quality Phil ... pure quality Cheers Richard
  21. At least people are sticking with the OVO principle OVO = obliterated vinyl only Cheers Richard
  22. So are you still the high bidder then Phil? Cheers Richard
  23. Don't worry Bob - after all it's not the end if the world is it :-) Cheers Richard
  24. Another phrase we use for such 'manufactured' records is 'tailor-made' - i.e. not an original recording from the time, but one made more recently to copy the original style. Some of the Ian Levine stuff falls into that category (and I don't like it) for example. Cheers Richard
  25. It's now USD $898 - which translates to over GBP £550! The current high bidder bid $667, then $777, then $888, then got the high bid with the $898 - what does that pattern of bidding tell you? It's turning into quite good entertainment now If any of the bidders are on here, please step forward so we can all ask you what on earth you are thinking  Cheers Richard
