  2. Send some of those punters down to oz they are in short supply round these parts. LOL Samantha
  3. I'm not a fan but I'll do it for my first record to keep the BPM's similar then restore it to its original speed. IMO + or - 3 is as far as you can go without effecting the integrity of a record. It seems with some DJ's here, the later the hour and the more substances imbibed the pitch often goes up along with the trim, gain ect... All fun and games until a female vocal with strings is played, whereapon you find yourself trying to dance to a chipmunk with a backing track of nails down a chalk board. Samantha

  5. Hello to all, I was unable to log in without my computer freezing for the last 12 months or more but now I'm on a shiny new one... This is, I think the crux of the matter. NS was a movement, the term was then co-opted to define a musical style then records got played that didn't fit the clasification and so new ones were required, similarly records are often discribed in context to where they were played first. Last week I had to discribe to a journalist putting an artical together for our new soul night (I'm in Sydney) what the musical terms were that we had on our flyer - NS, xover, modern So how DO you explain to people who have no idea what the terms mean so they know what they are going to get? This was my harried response because in truth I'm not sure I know myself. NS - 6Ts soul on the 4/4 beat Xover - late 6Ts/70's soul with a predominant back beat Modern -70's soul onwards with a disco feel and soulful lyrics In my house the term Modern is used by my housemate to discribe my soul records he doesn't like Samantha

  13. little stevie, who posts on this board has made his way to sydney and my couch. He arrived last night and I did my best to get him drunk, and made him smoke some funny cigarettes whilst playing him tunes. Its the least I could do! Nice chap with some nice records. He will guest on our radio show tonight, which we will record on to mini disc for him to take back, we'll take him out on the town and get him rat arsed again tonight, again.... the least we can do.

  18. johnny you may be right, but from where I sit its small change for new tunes. my collection is mostly crossover and modern but deffo mid-tempo, hope thats ok.

  20. I have a promo copy of Black & Blue - What I got (Mercury) Did this get issued and if so, whats on the flip I have "of all the hearts to break" on Game, is this all they did? Thanks and apologies in advance as I have a ton of these type of questions Im gonna be asking.
  21. Ive read these posts with envy, you should spare a thought for soul lovers in Sydney. We now have 2 nights a month and as we have never had enough people for 2 rooms everything was played in the one. When Ady Pountain was living here we had the best of everything but once he left the punters generally wanted the sounds they heard at Wigan when they were young (its mosly ex-pats here) and the scene split. Now one night plays what I concider pop and the other average northern or good boots even Ruby Andrews gets played from the re-issue as those that have the original dont get asked to play for fear they will spin "modern". Our ray of hope is Ady Harley an old Stafford boy with class records northern and crossover a like, but the organisers have worked out they have to put him on early so he doesnt play "modern" tunes like Guitar Ray, the 4 tracks, Belita Woods,Satin ect. It took 2years of him spinning the Constellations before it stopped clearing floors! My favorite floor killer was the Hamilton movement, sadly the owner of the record Maria, has gone to the UK and I'll miss dancing wildly across the vast expance of the floor with the 3 other people who enjoyed it. I dont come from a northern background, I just like what I concider good black music, but as a collector its that tune Ive never heard before and love that will make a night for me, not so for the average soulie here. I feel better for getting that off my chest.
  22. Thanks Mike I have got a bunch through Gemm from google, I was being lazy posting it here in the hope someone had some. John I know what you mean but I have 8 tracks of records I cant find/afford and the sound quality of them is fantastic, not to mention the players are very easy on the eye. Due to years of going to garage sales and charity shops looking for records Ive ended up with quite a collection of record related items, like portables, cases ect and once Ive found a couple it spawns a new collection in itself! Sad really......
  23. Does anyne ave any soul/funk 8 track cassettes they woul like to sell. Thanks in advance
