What Do You Think About The Upright Bass?
i was listening to a record i just got in the mail - "he's so good" by Earnestine Eady on Junior. it is a rollicking R&B tune (very dance worthy). as i was listening, i noticed it has an upright bass in it. i was remembering that i read some stuff about the evolution of reggae (maybe the "Rough Guide to Reggae" book?) and it talked about how the introduction of the electric bass guitar drove the evolution of jamaican music from ska/US R&B covers to "proper" reggae because it allowed for a movement away from traditional walking basslines to sparse clusters of heavy bass notes - that we associate with rocksteady. this "heavy" sound also matched well with the massive sound-systems that most jamaican people attended - resulting in the heavy duty reggae we saw in the 1970s (HEAVIEST being King Tubby's dub work, IMHO). so....my questions here: a) do you spin anything with upright bass in it? are there any proper "soul" songs (vs R&B) with upright in it? b) does anyone know anything about the transition between the upright bass to electric bass (i think Fender was the original, yes?) in US black music? c) ....anything else people want to riff on...

Brief Encounter - Where Will I Go?
well, first, i don't really consider myself a record collector. i like original 45s (but obviously have some re-issues of super-rarities like lester tipton). i also have a couple of carvers of things like "til you were gone" by frank wilson and the miracles (which was, as i far as i know, never released on vinyl, just CD) for DJ-ing. second, i just don't have any emotional feeling for LPs. third, when i do DJ, i am not gonna bring 200 45s in a flight-case and like 2 LPs. for example, i have a boot 45 of "my love is your love" by the isley bros (i assume it is a boot - it looks like a fake green british TMG demo with a white "A" on it), and don't bother to have the LP. fourth, i don't really consider a japanese LP from the 1980s as all that "original" (even though it may be technically/legally). i have been trolling through the comments on youtube for this song, and a person who claimed to be an original member of Brief Encounter said that they recorded this song for one of their 77 singles, and at the last minute (and without their knowledge) it was dumped in place of another song. that sucks! so i consider it an unreleased song, and a modern carver would be fine in my mind. to each his own!

Help Id A Song
I just got in the mail a bootleg of "kiss me now, don't kiss me later" by Florence Devore (the one that has a light blue label without the PhiDan wave logo). ...anyway, i just played it and it does not have that correct song on it. it rather has some other good up-tempo northern song. it starts with "baby baby oh how i love you" and the refrain is "where were you" with a female lead and male back-up vocals (its obviously not Epitome of Sound or Ernie Andrews). can someone help?

Deloris Ealy - I've Been Looking (Velvet)
just to clear up - i have been in contact with the seller and he does NOT have a second copy. he mistakenly re-listed the same image, but i emailed him to clarify and he took it down (he is still getting the hang of ebay). he said he shipped my record yesterday, so i am just crossing my fingers to get it in one piece! (but his feedbacks say he packs well, so let's hope so!)

Soul Club Names? Help Wanted
you guys don't know "garage rock"????? it is so much fun!!! i think of it this way. black R&B artists from the 50s and 60s were copied by white british groups (kinks, spencer davis, beatles etc) - and then white suburban teens in america try and copy that, but in a very crude, raucous way. it is also closely related to "frat rock" and "freak beat." it also was born around the same time as surf. the BEST popular garage band is the SONICS sonics - have love will travel or the fabulous wailers wailers - mashi the white stripes came from the detroit garage-revival scene (along the Von Bondies, the Hentchmen, etc) and Ohio (where i am originally from) has a lot of garage revival bands (the Long-Gones, the Pariahs, the In-Sect, the Greenhornes, etc) from england, a famous garage type bands is the Headcoats there is nothing more fun than a drunken basement show of garage bands... ps - if you are responsible for my funeral arrangements, play the Sonics version of the old huey piano smith song "don't you just know it".....
