How Long Does It Take To 'really' Know The Width/depth Of The Soul Genre?
I agree I would never want to own too many records. Over the years, as I buy more records, I try to "prune" some deadweight (like a gardner). And black music is vast! I used to collect rockabilly, and after a few years I felt I had hit rock-bottom in quality. Any new things I heard were truly subpar. But it blows my mind how much people know! I wonder how many hrs a week they've spent listening, and you tubing, and reading!

How Long Does It Take To 'really' Know The Width/depth Of The Soul Genre?
I have only been actively collecting soul 45s for about fifteen years, and only have about two thousand records. I am shocked every time I read a thread on here and I've never even heard of 90% of the records people are talking about (which is also good, because I feel I will never run out of things to find). My question is, how long does it take to get your head around the whole thing? Does anyone out there know so much that they never hear of records that they don't already know? I remember seeing an interview with an English guy on YouTube and he said "at that point I decided I wanted to get ALL of the black American soul/R&B 45s that are available". Is such a thing possible? Has anyone come close? Or even if they can't own it all, at least have heard it all?

Are These Commonly Known Songs By Uk Crowds?
Thanks all. Like I said, people there ended up being super cool. I was on fairly early in the evening (it started in the afternoon), so luckily there wasn't a raging dance floor for me to "kill" (but I probably would have with my stuff!) The funny thing is, as an American (and as "Boba" has also said on this forum), I really have no idea what northern soul really is. Every time we discussed a record, they would say "nice tune (choon), but not really northern". Club soul, or twisted wheel classic, or R&B, or popcorn, or just too obscure! But all were very kind .....I think people only like to dance to songs they know by heart!

Ok... You guys were correct. Not much dancing, but had some really nice conversations with the other DJs after my set! Folks were quite nice and I had a good time!

that's fine. the flyer says "northern, club soul, and motown". i am bringing (what i think) are more "normal" northern songs as well to balance out - like: - - chalfontes - he loves me - opals - i'm so afraid - dee dee warwick - don't ever give up on me - lovells - my time to cry - alder ray - my heart is in danger - irma and fascinators - lost love/just a feeling (can't decide which side to play!) - jim & lee - let go baby ....are these considered northern?

ok - i am hijacking this thread (sort of). i will be doing a small slot at a northern/club soul night in England next saturday, and it will be my first time DJing in england. i put this post up on the "all about soul" section, but got no responses. i am packing up my bags today, and need to choose my records. the person who is having me spin said "play some newies, but also play stuff people know". i want to play to the crowd/event (in a town called barrow) - but honestly don't know what records are commonly known over there... will people know these songs? are they played to death? any comments or advice? i am friends with they guy running it and don't want to let the side down! these were all less than $50, so i guess these count! please help if you see this! some things i am not sure about: -dionne warwick - you can have him (scepter) -leroy horne - don't come back (pompeii) -darlettes - til i fell in love (shell) -betty harris - trouble with my lover (sansu) -teacho/students chills and fever (okeh) -della reese - never my love (abc) -jennie rae - to love (mgm) -diamond joe - wait a minute baby (sansu) -honey duo twins - comeback baby (yambo) -lullabyes - you touch me (dimension) -dean francis - tippin (hillside) ...and two gospel numbers... -gospel ambassadors - cleansing power (halo) -alston singers - i'm holding on (cobra)

yeah - i love it now, but when i first bought it, it didn't "click" with me. i burn all my new purchases to mp3s, and then randomly heard it on my iPod at the gym like 3 months later and was like "wow!" i love when that happens!- Dionne Warwick - (Artist Of The Week)

cool! didn't know that. the trumpet player rick is the driving force behind the group. he also runs a weekly soul DJ night up in santa cruz.- Soul Revivalist Groups
there is a band from Santa Cruz, California called the Inciters. they've recorded a number of records over the years. I believe they took a break for awhile, but have been touring/playing heavily over the last year. They have drums, two guitars, bass, trumpet, tenor sax, barry sax, trombone, and three female singers. they do "he ain't no angel", "i'm coming home", "i'm a good woman" and many more. they also have a load of originals. they are really tight and entertaining!- White Label Copy Of "way You Been Acting Lateley" By Al Kent
thanks man! he emailed me straight away and told me about his contact with you (even quoted the 400 pound price). he was a good guy and i left him positive feedback! you're like the robin hood of the bay.- White Label Copy Of "way You Been Acting Lateley" By Al Kent
