White Label Copy Of "way You Been Acting Lateley" By Al Kent
I just won a copy of al kent "way you been acting lately" on ebay. the seller has just told me that it might be a boot (he doesn't know, but someone else suggested it). he has offered to cancel the transaction or renegotiate price if it is. any help? thanks! here is a link to the sale. https://www.ebay.com/itm/300673111860?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Help With The Brothers Johnson
I run a monthly small-scale pub night and this young guy who comes frequently told me the Brothers Johnson were his uncles. I would like to play something from them for him, but I normally play more 60s stuff and the vids of Bros Johnson i see on youtube are not that appealing to me (mild synth-funk). does anyone know of anything interesting from them that i could acquire that i could play for him without making me barf? thanks!

Gino Wshington - Like My Baby
I just won a copy of Mala 12029 (like my baby) by Gino Washington. On soulfulkindamusic.net they have this same song (as a vocal or instrumental) listed on at least 7 releases on like 5 different labels. are these all from the same recording? i saw a video on youtube that said it was "the faster version" of the song. anyone know? thanks in advance.

Betty Harris Article
Betty Harris is one of my ALL time faves. I just published a book on formal territorial empires, and I thank her in the preface for inspiration (along with Irma Thomas). Not sure if she would approve of the material, but I listened to her for many many hours while writing it! "Trouble with my lover", "lonely hearts", "what did i do wrong" - and the totally uplifting "love lots of loving" with Lee Dorsey. Beautiful stuff!!

BobA's UK Scene Questions
I think one thing that needs to be stated (and Bob alluded to this when he discussed American "oldies" radio stations) is that they only cover a TINY percentage of soul. I think (for whatever reason) that the average British person on the street knows alot more soul oldies than americans do. So a "tired oldie" in UK (like "this old heart of mine" by Isley Bros) would be an unheard-of rarity for the average american. I live/DJ in Monterey, CA (a small coastal town). There is no population of hipsters (like SF or Chicago). I put on small soul nights at local pubs etc, and play what I want to play (because I am making no money), but also try and keep the people happy. This is tough because no one knows anything about black music at all. For example, these are the ONLY soul requests I get EVERY time I DJ: "respect" by A Franklin, "sexual healing" by M Gaye, or "something by Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Temptations, Supremes" and often, if I ask for a specific title by these folks - they can't even name one! Not one! They just know the names! Some of these are college kids (who are always furiously searching on their i-phones for things to request) and some are older people. Even when I DJ for older black folks (I sometimes spin at a VFW for Vietnam war era black veterans), they have an extremely poor range of musical knowledge. In other words, I think "moldy oldies" in england would include a FAR wider range of interesting soul music than in america. Maybe I am just being a crank!

Dangerous Doo-Wop And Group Sound/early Soul..
Hey! Where do you DJ in California? I live/DJ on the central coast (Monterey/Santa Cruz) oldies, girl group, soul. Are you up in the city? Some early transitional stuff I like (and these are all things I got turned on to by Dick V at Rooky's): Victorians - what makes little girls cry Patty McCoy and the Renegades - double trouble Unforgettables - was it alright
