Ska Beat
£20+ I WOULD SAY? hAVE YOU GOT A COPY OF ISLAND..WI-237b-MARCIA GRIFFITHS-YOU NOW GOOD B/W THE GREAT ROY RICHARDS CLASSIC-GREEN COLLIE? A gret double sider that pleases old style Jamacan SKA and a classic MOD version of the great Hollies record..Like yourself I dont know how to value the disk as it is relativly cheap on Jamancan inport but that should not detract the value which is again £20+ the real issue in trying to price these type of 45s is if I gave you £30 how quick can you get a copy? last saturday I sold a spare copy of Glen Miller based on my own experiance of having had 6 copies in the past and the condition of the recored following the sale 2 well known UK collectors informed me the also wanted it and of course the price I sold it for could of been doubled straight away? however I know that may be so but I believe I sold it for the true value and as such if I buy from that person I know that I wont have to pay over inflated prices for records however my approach is not recomended if you pay top money for a record in the fist place as you will want to at least want to get your money back? as such the true value of some records are not reflected in the price that is being asked, however the Glen Miller is very rare DAVE KIL

HAVING LIVED IN WOLVES FOR 30 YRS NOW, IN MY YOUTH I MADE SURE THAT THE WEEKEND WAS ACTION PACKED, COMING UP TO THE MIDLANDS TO GO TO THE CATS, UP THE JUNCTION MECCA AND THE TORCH WITH THE LIKES OF MICK SMITH ect, WHEN WIGAN OPENED IN SEPT 73 UP UNTIL I DROPPED OF THE SCENE IN THE SPRING OF 78 I WOULD GO TO THE MECCA, WIGAN SAT NIGHT ,WIGAN OLDIES ALLNIGHTERS, CATS WHISKERS,SAMANTHAS, THE RITZ, CLEATHORPS BOTH PIERS, YATE,ST IVES AND PETERBOURGH, NOT FORGETTING THE MALLETT AND MANY MORE I EVEN WENT TO THE WHEEL IN 69, SO YOU CAN IMAGINE WHEN I CAME TO WOLVES EXPECTING IT TO BE DRIPPING WITTH RARE SOUL? I KNOW I DID NOT GO TO STAFFORD SHAME ON ME BUT DID GO TO THE VIC, 86 CLUB, JUNCTION 10 ALLNIGHTERS, KEELE, AND USE TO DJ AT THE BLACK HORSE, NOT FORGETTING PADDY & AGGYS DUES AT THE CONAUGHT, AND TEDS AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS, BUT RECENTLY LIKE THE LAST 8 YEARS I STAY AT HOME AND GET MORE SATISFACTION PLAYING MY OWN RECORDS THIS IS MAINLY DUE TO THE FACT THAT WITH THE GREATEST RESPECT TO ALL MY FRIENDS MOST LOCAL SOUL NIGHTS ARE TO MUCH THE SAME IN THAT THEY PLAY THE SAME STUFF ALL THE WHILE I HAVE RANTED ON ABOUT THIS SITUATION FOR YEARS AND THE POLICY GOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS IF YOU OWN A 100 TOP TUNES YOU GET A DJ SPOT IF YOU OWN AND TRULY COLLECT SOUL MUSIC FOR THE THE PASSION OF THE RECORD NO MATTER THE PRICE YOU DONT GET TO PLAY THEM OR WORSE BY A LOAD OF REISSUE STUFF AND CALL YOURSELF A SOUL BOY/GIRL I WANT TO HAVE NIGHTS LIKE IN THE BEGINING THAT IT WAS EXCITING TO BE THERE AND WANT TO TRY AND OWN SOME OF THE RECORDS YOU HERED ON THE NIGHT I HAVE SPOKEN TO PETE SMITH ABOUT THIS AS THERE ARE NO REAL SOUL NIGHTS THAT CATOR FOR THE LIKES OF MYSELF ANY MORE I AM 57 NOT 27 THEM DAYS ARE OVER FOR ME I CAN JUST MAKE IT TO KEELE 3 TIMES A YEAR AND THAT TO IS NOT AS WELL SUPPORTED BY THE WEST MIDLANDS CROWD UNLESS YOU CALL 15 A REPRESENTATION I DONT LETS MAKE THINGS HAPPEN AND NOT JUST TALK ABOUT WHAT WE WANT AND MISS DAVE KIL

Gloria Jones "tainted Love" Uk-issue On Soul Stop
IF I CAN REMEMBER RIGHTLY FIRST OF THIS WAS A OLD MUSIC INDUSTRY SCAM THAT HAS RUN FOR YEARS PUTTING A SELF PENNED B SIDE ON A 45 AS HALF THE ROYALTIES GO TO THE WRITTER SO GLORIE WOULD ONLY GET A SMALL IF NO PERCENTAGE OF THE RECOREDS PROFFITS AND THE MONEY ALWAYS GOES TO THE WRITER/PRODUCER FIRST, AND IN THE 6ts MOST ARTIST WERE PAID AT THE TIME FOR THE SESSION SAY $200 AND NO MORE THIS WAS THE PRACTICE IN jAMACA DAVE BARKER ONLY GOT £200 FOR DOUBLE BARRAL EVEN THOUGH IT MADE UK No1 DESMOND RILEY POCKETED ALL THE CASH, SEEMS UNFAIR WELL OF COURSE IT IS, THATS WHY SO MANY UK COVERS OF SOUL RECORDS IN THE 6ts HAD THE GROUPS OWN SONGS ON THE B SIDE RIPPING OF THE BLACK ARTIST IN THE US TWICE? AS FOR THE SOUL STOP B SIDE I AM SURE THAT IT WAS SOME LOCAL PETERBOURGH GROUP THAT KEN COX USED AND PAID THEM ABOUT £100 FOR THE COPY RIGHT AS NO ONE WOULD BE BUYING THE RECORD FOR THE B SIDE AND HE WOULD ONLY HAVE TO GIVE ED COBB THE WRITER NOT EVEN A QUATER, THE MAN TO ASK IS IAN LAVINE AS A WRITER AND PRODUCER OF A MORE QUALATIVE SOUND? YEARS AGO BACK IN THE 7ts i USED TO WORK AS A ROADIE AND AS SUCH GOT TO WORK WITH MANY SOUL ACTS AS THE DID UK TOURS. IN 1976 I HAD THE LUCK TO DO THE UK TOUR WITH KOOL & THE GANG WORKING ON THE LIGHTS AND STAGE EFFECTS IF YOU SAW THEM I PROVIDED THE FOG ON THE STAGE, AS THE TOUR WAS 9 WEEKS LONG GOT TO NO THE BAND VERY WELL AND GOT A REALLY GOOD INSITE TO THE US RECORDING WAYS AND HOW THINGS WERE DONE AS YOU ARE AWARE THERE IS A LINK BETWEEN THE GROUP WITH ED KYSER IN THE MID TO LATE 6TS AND AS I PLAYED A TAPE ONE NIGHT IT HAD GERRY & PAULS CAT WALK & ROBBY LAWSONS BURNING SENSATION THEY FREAKED OUT THAT SOME BRITISH GUY WAS PLAYING STUFF THAT WAS SO CLOSE TO THEM AND THE ROOTS OF KOOL AND THE GANG. THERE STAGE ROADIE/MoC WAS A GUY CALLED DONALD YOU CAN HERE HIM ON OPEN SESME. HE AND KOOL THE BASS PLAYER WERE HAVING A SMOKE ONE NIGHT AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT ALL UP AND COMING POTENTIAL SINGERS WHERE GIVEN A 10inch DUB PLATE WITH 6 INSTRAMENTLES ON THIS WAS COMMON PRACTICE AT MOTOWN AND CHESS DURING THE 6ts, FOR YEARS I HAVE ALWAYS WONDERD IF THE IS A INSTRAMENTLE OF JUST LIKE THE WHEATHER/LOVE REPUTATION AND WHY DOES PEOPLE LIKE ADY KEV ROBERTS ect NOT LOOK FOR THEM ON TAPE? AND DOES A ISSUE EXIST AS A DEMO OR ACCITATE THAT IS A LAGIT COMPANY RECORDING? ANY INFO ON THIS OR STUDIO INST DISCS WOULD BE WELL RECIEVED DAVE KIL

Prices Please
I found 2 Demos in the Salvation Army shop in Wolerhampton 50p each about 8yrs ago left 1 copy in John and Malcoms shop in Willinhall I think Niel Rushton bought it any way Malcom gave me £80 for it. Has there been many found since? I have both UK DEMO & issue as I collect UK product First I would defanently say the rareist is the issue which is rarely seen and by a long way price wise worth over a £100+ however if you are new to the game of collecting UK soul buy the DEMO as it looks better and is far cheaper DAVE KIL

I used to own a Chris Jackson accitat om 444 not SINCE NO DOUBT but a 2 tracker that was basic uptempo it was origanally mratins (soul sams) i swapped it beleive it or not for a pile of demos at the now roofless BLACK HORSE PUB in Wolves on the late 8ts to Mick Holsworth, I think Johny Pugh has it now with the other one, he told me it is now not in the same condition as when i had it as to rareity priceless as i have never hered or seen any written info about it sorry i cant remember the titles. but I did play it to Roy Geldor and Mick Smith at Walsall record fair who can vouch that I am not talking Bollocks DAVE KIL- How Modern Is Modern
In the days of the torch and early days of the Casino most records were less than 5 or 6 years old and of course Blackpool was famouse for playing sounds that were current or just a couple of years old so you had a situation that the new sounds were almost parralel with the classic oldie hence the sucess of the Friday night AllNighter at the Casino which at many times was more popular than the official Saturday Night. Moving on in the early 8ts newies was a term used for records not played in the 7ts except by collectors and modern to me meant HI Energy type sounds so modern was basically soulfull Disco if we look back today at what is moder there has been a slight change in that the music has its roots in 2 forms of soul that were not really recognised in the early days of stomp. by that i mean mid tempo and funk in the purest form and modern capulates the groove of a vast array of soul music that origanal allnighter goers would not dismis but found it not in keeping with the stomp. so in the main modern means a 7ts 8ts sound that has been accepted by rare soul collectors away from the stomp sound i think we all no off 6ts sounds that fall in the modern sound guide line is Wide Awake in a Dream a good example of what i mean, so basically is 73 to 83 with exceptions?, and no Duffy is not modern SOUl so dont even think about it there 1000s of great SOUL sounds out there Duffy is just a very tallanted singer who sings in a old stye way DAVE KIL- Ripped Off On Ebay
No this is not boring, as this type of misleading is clearly done so you can be conned, the dealer will always say why did you not contact him/her before bidding its your fault, and when returning a recored always be clear to the dealer that you are going to send it regesterd and he must refund the postage to you once again he/she is planning that you arnt going to do this, as they are scum, my tip is allways deal with reputable dealers who you can trust see there feedback ect and if it looks a to good to be true record remember its 2009 not 2005 when you could pick up great records cheap. i would also recomend you by records especially rare ones not on line but of a list from poeple who have been dealers for a long time Ian Clark, Mick Smith ect you know what i mean? todays dealers online also seem to have a min bid that indicates that its a gen record and not a boot ect I hope you get your cash back and always check first if not with the dealer one of your mates as they may already know about a record SAM DEES Lonly for you Baby spring to ming as its a B side the DEMO is Double A DAVE KIL- Need A British Action Discography
Dont for get there are a couple of samplers the Action/poeple single my copy of it was featured in a copy of RECORD COLLECTOR when they issued the great ISLAND STORY over 5 issues a must read? and a Leeds Uni featuring Joe Cocker or was that on Sue. I dont know of any other promos except for the skelington A, and the EMI style DEMO on the Green & Blacks not clears? also Black A on the Blue & Grey man standing copies that for some reason came out as one sided A,s which means a issue can be more desireable as thats the side to here, frustrating or what, it is my opinion that Eddie Holman..I Surrender DEMO is the rareist ACTION however some younger and newer collectors seem to think TOM GREENE is i think they get it wrong as the Tom G was not a collectors item till 10 years ago and demand out grew availability. the question is what is the best Action single or should this be a new topic DAVE KIL- No Manship Guide... I was there that night selling as you do not miss allnighters, for those who were there it was the strangest nighter that you could be at with all the lights on, I took 3 spools of super 8 mm film that for some strange reason someone had bout along to film outside in the morning when we got in the Casino the suprise of the lights pissed many regulars of however I walked around the balcony, in the bar and filmed Kieth Minshall DJing from the stage, as for chewies never retorted to that crap if you new me I always had the proper stuff, the film still exists by the owner who lives in NORTH HERTS, I would love a copy of the film and I suspect so would every body who is in love with wigan casino but the geezer wont let any one see it for some strange reason? and of couse i am on the documentry you no us Londoners always walking to the front of the quew Dave Kil- Need A British Action Discography
