  1. A real GIANT gone. How influential was Jerry Ragovoy?. I can't go very far into the records on my shelves without coming across this name. One of the most prolific writers/arrangers/producers of all time. A very sad loss to us all. R.I.P. Jerry. Up with the angels now. God Bless. Kevin

Tommo I'm more than happy to keep hold of what I can from my collection and keep adding to it whenever possible. Also more than happy to enjoy them 'til I 'pop me clogs'. then it's up to some other fortunate to carry the flag. What can you do eh? One Life, One Soul. KTF. Best Kev
  3. I must say there's not much Dave Hamilton product not to like, but for me, at the moment it has to be this one. Pure bliss. I was talking to Gilly recently about how it sounds like he's playing milk bottles in a Detroit basement and Gilly replied 'he probably was Kev'.
  4. I'll second that Val. It's a real accolade to the variety and breadth of Dave Hamilton's talent and his long and lustrous career...from the early Temple recordings, through the (classic what you'd expect from Mr Hamilton and his various partners) the likes of Pricilla Page on Topper and the sublime mid-tempo gem by JT Rhythm on Palmer with, of course, the bonus of Mike Terry's sax bubbling along throughout. Also thrown in is one I've been championing for a few years now Bobby Dee's chugging R'nB style outing on DemoRistic 'Sweet Thing Pts 1 & 2' . Quite a few unissued tracks here as well. Ortheia Barnes','Never, Never Leave Me' is very good  as is 'I'm Begging You' by Chicago Pete  The later tracks by The Moderations, Nightchill and New Experience are all quality sides. To top it off you have the instrumental of 'You Turned Me Around' and an edited version of Dave Hamilton's 'Soul Suite' just in case we forget that Mr Hamilton was steeped in Jazz traditions that made him a main player when helping set up Motown Records in the late 50's/early 60's with Berry Gordy Jr. Another Legend, another great cd from Ace/Kent. Great informative sleeve notes. This cd is a definite 5***** with more than a little something for all tastes. If you like good soul music I suggest you check it out. Job done. Best Kev

  13. we must be on a similar wavelength I think it's an affliction Carl. When I'm out dancing I sometimes have 'the imaginary instrument' with me-it used to be the horns in the early days, mainly saxaphone and trumpet. It occassionaly changes into the drum patterns at the moment its the guitar (rhythm or base), . when I hear a song that ticks my boxes, is analyse, I think there are certain notes, key changes, phrases or mechanics of just a couple of instruments playing that capture me, and I am hooked. That's what I have been doing since I was about 13. I think I wrote my first essay on an instrumental track 'I Hear A Symphony' Carmel Strings when I was 16. In my Diary-I wish I'd kept all that stuff . I agree about the Holland Dozier track - loud, punctuated, good high and low frequencies captured onto tape, without, by the sound of it, too many dubs and mixdowns. I think that was the likes of Ray Monette, Dennis Coffey on guitar and Babbit on bass again. Not sure who the drummer was, could have been Uriel or maybe even Spyder Webb.... If you have ever heard 'Glory Fleeting' I posted on Youtube as a demo, this track I was trying to emulate a Ric Tic instrumental.... This track actually features George Katsakis of The Royaltones (where Bob and Dennis used to be members) who offered to help out with my quest in the early days. I tried very hard to get the back beats on the guitar right, but that is an usual skill and quite painful for a really non guitarist as me! There are like 3 separate tracks of sax, and real guitar overdubs that I have done. I also did a real bass line on it..... A few weeks ago I found myself with a spare few hours and decided to pull out some tunes I hadn't heard for a while. I was half way through re-reading Dennis Coffey's book and it reminded me of The Holidays-Making Up Time-Golden World'. I sat on my sofa with an air guitar and tried to emulate the guitar- punch back beat! I was there for quite a while but could I get it? Not a chance. The guitar back beat is like The metronome from heaven. Totally on the Mark. I thought it would be easy. I obviously need a lot more years of practice.............and a guitar. Great thread Carl......Keep up the good work. Best Kev
  14. ....and this one. A very young Tony Smith.

  18. Hi Ken. Seems a long long time ago since we first met that sad day at The Alex. It did however spark some fantastic soul nights and longstanding friendships . best Kev
  19. That is so nice Lorraine. I'm sure it fills the hearts of many a soul fan on this site to know that the respect and feeling is reciprocated. Best Kevin
  20. Mark Lenny's sad death was the start of it all. we'd been running The Dance Chase for over a year by then but the Northern nights began with that fundraiser. Yes his family were there that night. I didn't know him from Stafford as I was a non-attender but we became good mates when I moved to Clapham. He was going out with Teresa my girlfriend Debbie's best mate at the time he died. A sad loss. I still have a couple of records his sister gave me as a reminder of him. I also remember that Lenny's labrador dog MAX turned up at the Alex one night , not long after his funeral, and Teresa followed it home only to find it was locked in the house. (I kid you not) Always was a wild one Lenny. I remember the Labour party do. I was playing stuff like Garfield Fleming and The Seven Souls at that Xmas Party. Also remember dancing with Glynnis Kinnock to a Marvin Gaye record. I bumped into John Prescott in the bogs and pleaded with him to sort things out if he ever got into power as, I quote, (Its mighty shit out there). I bumped into him years later outside the Guardi Cathedral in Barcelona but didn't have the heart to remind him, (Its still mighty shit out there.) See you at the next Majestic hopefully. Best Kev
  21. That's funny.Made me laugh  I remember we chained a huge bass bin to the ceiling joist directly over the dancefloor. I prayed every night for weeks that it wouldn't come crashing down killing god knows how many dancers and giving us BIG headlines in The South London Press.!! One of the things I liked about the place is that Geoff and me built the place from scratch,. dancefloor, electrics, console, cloakroom, fire exit. We purposely built it to turn it into a club that could have a 2 O'clock liscence. Something that didn't happen in that area at all. If you can find that flyer could you post it up. I'm trying to contact Keiron as he has all the promotional stuff from those days. I lent him them as he was compiling a book on the history of clubs in the Brixton/Clapham area but I've now lost touch with him. Best Kev Anyone remember THE DANCE CHASE nights and THE HIGH NOTE CLUB!! Ion, do you think there'd be enough interest in trying to get a reunion together??
  22. If anyone has a contact number or address for Kieron I'd much appreciate a PM. We used to be very good friends until I lost contact with him when I moved out of the Brixton area. I'd like to know how he is fairing these days. Best Kev.
  23. Here's that pic geeselad...formally known as Kenny with Dave. I remember you did dj down there for us a few times and if I remember correctly did a sterling job too!
