  3. One that perhaps some people don't know Chalky or don't remember, find it strange when from what I can see the uptempo records are what people want again in the main at nights? Mark
  4. I raised a question on here recently Tony as to would a roots/classic spot work on today's scene, I did'nt mean the tried and tested top 500 either I meant the West Hampstead ethos pre 100 Club type of thing, but I think the question got a little confused and lost slightly, guess I mean all the best bits put together and presented bang slap in the middle of a night. Eddie And Ernie is sublime. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
  5. Another eight white demo's which I think are pretty tuff to find, love the Symbol/Eastern/Broadway ones. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

  9. Having a ball picking up some nice little bit's and bobs got this for pennies recently and reckon it's pretty hard to find on a White Thomas Demo? great record at the best of times, be nice to get a thread going of what we consider maybe common records on stock/issues but perhaps elusive on a demo. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
  10. I'm very much old school when it comes to records, from way back when I first got into DJ'ing it was an unwritten rule basically that if you wanted to take the rare soul DJ mantle then the tools of your trade should be first generation original records either first generation American originals or UK/British originals, so in simple terms to answer your question it would have to be USA Hickory not the UK reissue, there are hundreds of people who DJ on the soul scene some follow the original only route and would rather not own or play a bootleg/pressing/reissue if they do not hold the original and that's how it should be otherwise anyone can become a DJ and it kind of dilutes it being a rare soul scene don't you think? When I was top of my game with the DJ thing I would never take short cuts and buy anything other than originals and still don't in my own personal collecting, of course you pick up the odd boot when buying collections etc. but never would I play them at a gig. I think most of us know who applies the original only ethic and it can take you along way up the ladder and far better to be one of the boy's than someone who wants the glory without putting the blood, sweat, tears and financial investment required. Mark you could go on Ebay right now if you had a couple of Grand handy and with a bit of digging put yourself a nice little box together of original records, you've just got to know your subject and do your best within your means but in all honesty The Newbeats and the like are simply not gonna cut the mustard anymore, not at any level anyway. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
  11. I think it's very much the case as Chalky said two different scenes with the common ground being 60's/retro influenced soul music, I did ask the question which Steve Cato kind of replied to being would an older DJ go down at a younger crowd event? someone else also mentioned that it mattered very little who was playing the music and off what format and the OVO ethos had little or no relevence to the younger retro cluber, the difference between the two scenes if you like is one has history and certain ethics it works to and the other is using some of the backbone rules if you like to develop it's own slant on things and good for them I say, still would be interesting to see how some records they have not been exsposed to would go down perhaps presented by older DJ's, we harp on about the younger coming to the older scene how about the older going to the younger otherwise it all seems a bit one sided. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
  12. How refreshing that sounds, no soul police, no judging if the records are rare or not, just getting into the music wonderful, as it should be. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

  18. Lol smart arse, no I was simply curious to know how this would work or go down to a younger crowd as I thought it was more about the music being presented than the age of the person playing it. Regards - Mark Bicknell - age 50 1/2 lol
  19. A question? 360 degree turn here and a question to the younger people, how would a time served DJ fair at a younger crowd based event? just a thought. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

  21. Yes but the traditions and general mind set of rare soul DJ'ing is to own and play rare records often most of the desired tunes are hard to find and exspensive, also rightly or wrongly the DJ who holds and plays the so called big ticket items will get the kudos and adulation over the DJ who plays lesser valuable tunes sad but true, note I said valuable and not quality as we all know that many cheaper records leave some of the big ticket items for dead it that respect, this is part of the reason why top level DJ'ing would sometimes appear to be a closed shop as some people perceive those DJ's with the big ticket records to be the best at what they do well we all know if you have deep pockets you can buy what records you want but I'm not sure if this route makes you a good DJ or not? Regards - Mark Bicknell.
  22. Hi Mark, collecting records is a very addictive thing to get into as soon as you buy your first record the bug hits and you want the next record, I guess some of us take it for granted and buying records is almost second nature, I wheel, deal, swap, trade it's how I've always done it, I have to pick up on one of your comments that you are finding it hard to get a decent box together due to cost and availability well if you have the funds in place and are selective in what you buy you could this very second go on Ebay for example and almost instantly buy a good selection of records often at 'Buy It Now' prices at any given time on UK Ebay alone there is something like 12,000 records on offer, wade through the crap, bootlegs and overpriced stuff and you can find some pretty tasty records, not to mention the sales section here on Soul Source and the many established record dealers worldwide, perhaps a good starting point for you would be to use your CD collection as a reference point ident the tunes you like and put a wants list together from that, give yourself a budget and with a little hard work and a couple of Grand you could put a very tasty playbox together almost instantly, I feel the availability of records is not the issue here as there are thousands of records out there for sale the problem is perhaps the financial commitment you get into when collecting records as I said at the top of my reply here once the bug hits it can take over pretty quickly, half the joy of collecting is the chase and the process of hunting, locating, buying, getting a record putting in in a nice clean cover placing it in the collection or DJ box and moving onto the next one and that's the problem I would suggest that most if not all collectors are never really happy, never really complete, I'm currently buying stuff I either used to own or which passed me by before infact I've just bought a couple of things which I sold only recently such is the weirdness of collecting Northern Soul lol. If you stay away from getting involved in the big ticket items which is easy to say until you buy your first biggie then as before it's onto the next one and so it goes but if you can do that with a modest investment as I say you can very quickly put a very solid DJ box together, research and knowing your subject is a big plus, ask questions, suck up all the information you can through Soul Source alone we are learning all the time and is a massive help to collectors/DJ's old and new, good luck but remember once you dip your toe mate the chase is on trouble is you will never quite catch what your looking for no matter how hard you try or how much money you spend lol Regards - Mark Bicknell.
  23. The age of a DJ should not come into of course with age comes experence but it should be about if the DJ has the records and can cut the mustard behind the decks and not how old he or she is. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
