  1. Peggy Gaines does an incredible version of it on Night Train (with the Hytones), I've posted it a few times on FB. Pity it was never released. Though no doubt someone will now boot the NT videoclip and flog it as an acetate.

  7. Cheers mate. Launch day for A Nickel And A Nail has been brought forward to Friday 5 August. Folk can sign up at https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/ for notifications The purpose of this thread is not to push the site per se. Really a call to self-publishing authors to be aware that there is a retail platform available to promote their work alongside usual book stock, to a genre-focused market. Kinda get it out there (alongside Soulsource of course!). The intention is to promote the product but also the writers themselves through newsletter / blog articles etc.
  8. Just finished building the website for A Nickel And A Nail: an independent online book store catering specifically for soul, Motown, R&B. We will be selling new and quality used publications, genre related collectable sheet music and magazines / fanzines. As well as retailing product from traditional publishing houses, the intention is to exist as a platform for the promotion and sale of quality self-published historical reference material, and scene-related themes. Please follow the link below to sign up for news as it occurs re opening dates, news and reviews.... https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com

  10. Have a question or two on these floating around. NOT just the Charles Sheffield but the whole late 50s swamp blues stuff to mid 60s soul Lightnin Slim, Slim Harpo, Roscoe Shelton, Marion James etc. Can anybody throw any light on where these originated from (Germany maybe) and any definitive way to distinguish, other than just newness. Some are pretty obvious, and some use the 'wrong' label design of the two I think but this isn't common and not consistent. Any dead wax clues, subtle block colour differences etc. ? You can almost smell a mucky Excello original I know !
  11. Call out to all self publishers. I am taking stock for an online bookstore specialising in soul and R&B, due to open September. I am interested in using it as a platform to promote and sell quality works by self publishing authors on soul, R&B music, and scene related works (northern soul, mod etc) as well as works via traditional publishing houses. If you are one please contact me by pm to discuss further. Thanks Mark.

  13. Nashville book I'm working on Mike
  14. Odd that some say the black ones don't have the fault, 99% sure they all do, though the level of the pressing fault may be different between the two formats. I had a copy of the black text format (in my first book) and this had it. One of the band members sent me a sound file of a re-edited version he did in recent years, slightly cleaned up and pitched at the original intended speed.
  15. A couple of high res scans required, must be owners own copy (no internet trawl), and clean labels: Avons - Just as long as I live -SS7 Roger Hatcher - Sweetest girl etc - Excello Avons - Push a little harder - Groove PICTURE COVER, NOT 45 Please pm me, I need specific requirements so please contact me first before doing anything. 16. A call out to all self publishing writers of soul and related works. The independent online soul and R&B specialist bookstore "A Nickel And A Nail" will be opening 5 August 2016. Part of the objective, as well as catering for the specific literary needs of genre fans, is to exist as a platform for (quality) self publications for sale and reviews. We will be interested in historical reference and 'scene' related works. Any interested writers please pm me for more details. Thanks, Mark.

  19. With Nashvilles' long history of live black entertainment since the 40s (and even earlier) and R&B, the city had a potential to compete with some of the cities of the north with respect to the development of soul music in the 60s. A soul explosion of sorts did happen of course, but was stunted. Not only because of the 'Country machine', but also to massive urban renewal projects which started in the late 50s and contuinued through the late 60s / early 70s. The city planners essentially bulldozed most of the black community areas including housing, clubs and bars along Jefferson Street and other areas to tidy the city up, but actually ended up with disproportionate building of new housing projects versus folk who were actually displaced. This process fragmented the black community, left hundreds of families homeless, and in a musical context, artists no longer had a focal place to demonstrate their talents, practice their craft or be scouted. Just working on presenting the whole Nashville soul story weaving in a collection of around 15-20 biographies at the mo, should hopefully be finished end of this year / early next.
  20. Thanks for the update Dave. Indispensible resource I use all the time. Keep up the good work!
  21. The Greater Experience guitarist sent me this....
  22. No. Archie and Pat probably the easiest to find on it, or was at one point. Re Ascots. Sold mine for about £600-700 I think probably 4-5 years ago. Just doesnt turn up that often then gets snapped up. "Anytime" is just as good, if not even better. Depends what kind of mood you're in.
  23. For anyone interested in biographies of lesser known southern soul artists of northern soul interest....includes The Passions, Troy Marrs, Gene and the Team Beats, Lost Soul, Lee Tillman, Bernard Smith and the Jokers Wild, Bob Marshall and the Crystals, Tommy Ray Tucker, The Showmen, Merle Spears and loads more... https://www.blurb.co.uk/b/5936116-rhythm-message Or contact me direct, Cheers, Mark.
