  1. This is the second in a series of mini mixes focusing on 5 tracks by a single artist. https://www.mixcloud.com/gregbelson/artist-focus-five-the-voices-of-nashville/ These will mostly be specializing in the world of gospel soul and funk, hopefully shedding some light to artists that have gone far too long without their due recognition. For this spotlight, we travel to Nashville, TENN for the aptly named The Voices of Nashville. The mix is crafted as a flow to highlight their amazing versatility from killer balladeers to heavy groove laden funk masters. The group was organized by Dr. Morgan Babb from the WVOL Radio Station. Two of the members were plucked from the Fairfield Four, a famous group touring the circuit at that time. Willie Love and Thomas Huggins, Jr. provided most of the lead vocals, alternating between such tender ballads as the Chanita release, to the driving dancefloor soul of the Hoyt Sullivan Enterprises era. The track's here are presented on four different labels; Chanita, HSH, HSE, & Creed, all out of Nashville.

  3. Here's the first in a series of mini mixes focusing on 5 tracks by a single artist. https://www.mixcloud.com/gregbelson/artist-focus-five-the-peerless-four/ These will mostly be specializing in the world of gospel soul and funk, hopefully shedding some light to artists that have gone far too long without their due recognition. To launch the series, we head to Norfolk, VA and present to you The Peerless Four. For this selection, I've constructed the mix to show their versatility from sublime harmony lead ballads, to a more uptempo funkier setting. Lead vocal duties were often shared within the group, including Johnny Ross, Calvin Wilson, Garland Owens and Clyde Burston. Production was often handled by Martin Culpepper, who was rumored to be a harsh businessman that many didn't want to deal with. I hasten to add that I don't have any hard facts to justify that claim, so I maintain that it's speculation from research on my part. The 45's here are presented on three different labels; Calvary, Job's and Bal - Clair, all out of Virginia.
  4. Cheers for the insight, Andy.....I was a little young in the early 80's to be buying from John's lists, but I figured there must have been a 'story' surrounding the New Way disc. Still not a lot of people seem to know it, but I have seen it crop up on the odd playlist. The label itself has at least 10 other titles attached to it, so not a one off, which leads me to think that at least 300/500 were pressed.
  5. Thanks so much for the comment....I'm familiar with the Donnie Scales but don't own a copy as yet. Nice 45, no doubt! When I heard the Gospel Angelics, my immediate thought was how great it will sound next to this 45;
  6. Thanks alot for the message.....so you have another copy of the Gospel Angelics? Just trying to gauge how many of these are out there! And yeah, I know about the Rev. Rufus....seen it listed around Soul Source (a quick scoot around sees a listing in December 2012), plus I can see a few copies have floated through ebay. I didn't make any offers on it in the past cos there's something about it that's not quite clicking with me. But I'll stay with it.....that might change.
  7. Cheers for the comment......I'm thinking late 70's, but it easily could have crept into the early 80's. Very difficult to date these kind of discs......anywhere between '79 and '84, I reckon.
  8. Recorded at Polly Fox 24 Track Studio, Nashville, TN 37209
  9. Cheers for the post, Nev....ha, yep.....having to score 1,000's of happy clappy tunes to find 'The One'.....diggin' for gospel is like being in 'The Matrix'.....ha!
  10. I had actually toyed with that, but hey, it's such a good 45 and from my findings, very rare at any rate, a c/u kind of defeats the point. I'd rather share this one, no doubt.
  11. Cheers for the link....I'd say it's not a later version of the same song, but it's hard to be 100%. There's no writer info linking the 45 to the CD release either....worth exploring though. Thanks!
  12. Before we kick things off, it would be great if we could keep the thread as positive as possible. I appreciate that crossover is not to everyone's style on this board so if it's not your cup of tea, that's absolutely fine.....there's plenty of room elsewhere on the board to discuss other things. Cheers for your understanding . I found this 45 mid summer and it was one of those 45's that struck me the very first second I heard it.....amazing crossover with a superb arrangement and killer vocal. For me, it catapults it into a 'must have' disc. I've been trying to source information now for close to 6 months and come up completely dry. So I thought at this point, I'd hand it over to you guys for thoughts, opinions and possibly some information, if we can find any. I can't find any other copies, so at the moment in the collector world, is this it....always dubious about saying that, but usually when you do, other copies potentially come out of the woodwork. Here's the youtube clip; Positive discussion comments are welcome..........cheers!
  13. Here's the 41st installment of The Divine Chord Gospel Show which appears monthly on dublab.com. https://www.mixcloud.com/gregbelson/divine-chord-gospel-show-pt-41/ Over the last few months, I've been stockpiling a selection of heavy hitting, rare 45's that given the right exposure, will appeal to any dancefloor worldwide. The first section this month focus's on 7 original cuts that are complete unknowns....so far. Raw soul music, freshly discovered! For pt. 2, we feature a slew of amazing downtempo, sweet and ultra deep 45's. Check the amazing offering from The Vigilights as well as the killer from the United Voices out of South Carolina. And the stone cold tremelo guitar of the Silver Wings...outstanding! And for pt. 3, we head to stepper territory once again. A series of slower tempo tunes designed for the later dancefloor spots....intro'd by the smooth funk of the first 3 cuts, before crossing it out with the mighty Revival. But just wait for The Gospel Angelics!!

  15. Wow, Easyjet allowed you on the flight with your records? I was flying to Edinburgh a few years back and they refused me taking my discs on board because, and I quote 'Sir, you can break them in half and use them as stabbing implements'......I sh*t you not. I guess they've changed their policy with such things, but still, it's always best to check with the bucket airlines. As far as Ryanair is concerned, weight can be an issue as well. I think the limit is 9 kg's. I stuffed my Zomo bag that holds around 150 paper sleeved 45's (ie no cardboard outer), and it weighed just under 9kg's.....so I was OK. Zomo bags have a similar construct to Magma, so you should be OK with weight; if you're concerned about it, buy a weighing hook on Amazon for a fiver. As said before, you REALLY don't want your tunes in the hold in a Magma bag, mate. Good luck!
  16. Broadcasting live tomorrow..... 3 sections of 7 x 7"s for your enjoyment. All of these are brand new additions to the collection which are particularly heavy hitting and in most cases getting their first play on air anywhere. For the first set of 7 discs, I'll be playing a bunch of club bound cuts, the sort of sound that will be big coming to a club near you soon....and all of them are first time plays! So, notepads at the ready cos they're all pretty tasty! Then for the second set of 7, it's beautiful ballads, sweet soul rola's and deep, deep soul for your consideration......and for the last 7, it's crossover territory including a few absolutely insane 45's that are destined for bigger things. Join us on 26th November at 2pm US PST (10 pm UK time)....this one's gonna be a classic! ;)
  17. Please join me on dublab.com, Wednesday 26th November @ 2pm US PST (10pm UK time), for the next installment of the Divine Chord Gospel Show pt. 41.... https://dublab.com/ Over the last few months, I've been accumulating a stack of heavy hitting dancefloor oriented funk and soul cuts into the playbox, and it's now time to unleash them on air. A whole mess of seriously rare and seriously good tunes all on original 45 that are just waiting to be heard. As usual, I'll have some stunning deep and sweet soul rola's and riders too, before dropping some killer crossover gear, that's ripe for some exposure. If you haven't checked out the show yet, then this is the one to take your cherry. For those of you that are avid listeners....this one's gonna be a tad tasty! 20. Wouldn't see why not, mate.....Duane Yates gets enough mentions, and I played the two back to back on my last tour a few times. 'Explosive' ain't the word!
  21. Seriously, are people still so narrow minded as to allow something so small get in the way of the power of a soul tune delivered with a gospel intensity? Pretty sad if that's still the case.
  22. Apologies in the slight delay for uploading the latest show onto mixcloud....here it is in all its glory.....hard dancefloor funk cuts, to 5 seminal sweet soul beauties, then onto a selection of heavy duty modern soul and disco tunes. An hour of niceness you might not have heard before and a clutch of rare soul music to get your teeth into. Comments and questions are welcomed. Cheers all! Here's the 40th installment of The Divine Chord Gospel Show which appears monthly on dublab.com. https://www.mixcloud.com/gregbelson/divine-chord-gospel-show-pt-40/ For this session, things get busy from the get go with a superb unreleased as yet gospel mash-up from the Divine Light Assembly, before heading into the breakladen funk of Gus Poole. Cliff Mason delivers a killer soulful groove, and the Staple Singers bring it on home. For pt. 2, we head to sweet soul territory with the killer rarity on the Memorial label by the Eveready Singers....there's 5 cuts in the shortened section for this month, but everyone is a sublime killer. The Stars of Glory? Yeah, insane..... To close out this month, we kicks things off with the beautiful Bobby Fulton groove extended LP version before heading to dancefloor territory. Huge cuts from the Mockingbirds of the South, Preston Wiggins, Charlie Clemons & Michael Orr. Amazing club tunes, no doubt! Feel free to join the facebook group 'The Divine Chord Gospel Show'!
