  1. Let's not get bittier or twisted, with 20/20 hindsight it is easy to critcise today what was played in the past, and there was some crap from both black and white artists. The point is, call it blue eyed soul or whatever, I can guarantee the the majority of the sounds listed on this thread with a few exceptions, we thought were by black artists at the time, it was only at a later date did we find out that they were "white" did it matter, no because they were soulful records and we were all soul fans. I didn't know till this thread that the O'Kaysions were white and I first heard that 40 year ago!
  2. John Schroeder definately yes, though the picture above is on a re issue I believe, talking of Pye and instrumentals, who nicked Leon Young Strings - Glad All Over instrumental from the BBC library on PYE demo, which was definately played.(Billy Butler from Liverpool?) or was it Alan Day? This thread is becomming educational!
  3. Stirrin up Some Soul was played at Wigan late 73, remember (god knows how)being one of he first in one night with Gray, anyway as it was empty and it was one of the first records played, the sound virtually pinned us against the wall, and no it wasn't the DS in disguise! No, with thought, the sound that pinned us against the wall was Sandy Nelson -Sock it to em JB, but the Marketts was next. When was the Vogues - That's the Tune first aired? Shelly
  4. Forgot and nobody else as mentioned him Billy Harner What About the Music & Sally Sayin Somethin Remebered - unfortunately Reperata & the Delrons Panic also forgot but not unfortunately Lada Edmund Jr The Larue, recorded in 66 but not sure about the first playing. Lastly, mega Torch sound April Stevens Wanting You brains working well this morning, must be the thought of Judy Moss' 60th party today!
  5. THREE OF THE WORST Guy Darrell I've Been Hurt R Dean Taylor Ghost in My House Relections Just Like Adam & Eve, though Just Like Romeo & Juliet was ok
  6. Mel Torme Comin Home Baby
  7. Question What where the best 3 sounds recorded and played by white artists up to 73? that cuts out a lot of the pop crap played at Wigan, I know you could fill this with Spencer Davis Group but.... My view Rufus Lumley I'm Standing Wayne Fontana Something Keeps Calling Me Back Charlie Rich Love is After Me
  8. The Torch last all niter was two weeks earlier, then the week before Troggs was the all dayer with Sam&Dave, then -Troggs, I heard about the milk float story but had forgotten , it appears it was a monumental night for all the wrong reasons!!! One day everyone will know chapter and verse and then be forgotten agian for another 37 years!
  9. Appreciate the update, it was far from being f***ing romantic that night, but Sparky shooting someone, being a local thief or what is repeated by ones who where there from this area. Anyway, a bit more clarity has been added, Alan dj 'd or at least was on the dex ,I mean decks, but the sound was on minimum most of the night so questionable in the true sense of the term. Hopefully a few more pieces to the jigsaw will be added, then we can go on to the next topics that no one can remember, did rod stewart and elton john back up Long John Baldry at the Gliderdrome all nighter in Boston bank hol weekend c 69 and second, was Quick Joey Small ever played at the Wheel? Shelly
  10. Apologies to all, got seriously messed up, I confused Sparky with Smokie
  11. So had everyone else that night
  12. After a reunion(piss up for Grays birthday) last Friday night, the topic went on to Troggs allnighter in Farnworth Bolton the week after the Torch shut. We went in a van from the Old English driven by Nicky C, on arriving it was already mayhem crowds outside almost fighting to get in. I got in with then girl friend Ruth from Winchester, miles didn't matter then, a couple others from the van also got in, but the rest where locked out. Now, what happened The manager kept coming on stage saying drop your gear it's a raid, Jack Bollington went to the cloakroom to get his tape recorder -I wonder why, and wasn't allowed in as someone had been shot, blood all over the wall and ceiling, story was S****e from Brum had shot someone, it was the most weird niter I ever went to, music on low all night, police trying to get in, metal gates barring them, totally smashed and about 500 outside dancing to discatrons and cassettes all night and bllod covering the cloakroom, including jackets, when we left in the morning, believe it or not we where there all night, then both mine and Ruth's jackets where splatterd in blood. Does anyone know what really happened, we'd all had g&c's so where totally out of it and so it appears was everyone else wo was either insideor outside.
  13. Roggert, trust you to talk about Stimpalene, it turned pink when mixed with cola, well that's the colour of the bottle we shared! Swish, go back to getting the train from Derby to Stoke for the Torch, I used to be with Dave Gallanders and the rest etc at that time and you where trying to flog Rufus Lumley on Stateside demo for £25
  14. I forgot Smokie, think I'll start a thread What haapened at Troggs allniter just after the Torch shut? Who shot who, did it get raided, who dj'd, well tried to as the music was turned down to minimal half the night etc , etc That's a starter for 10
  15. Knutsford services was a bastard, they'd wait for you to park and then turn you over, head honcho was a guy in a cream leather jacket -Van der Valk, remember this is 1974. Anyway, all appeared in court in Macclesfield, Derby and Notts lads with a massive pile of caps in front of the magistrate, after getting a £30 fine each, Gary from Notts asked if he could have his gear back! After all it was all bombers, black&whites and g&c's, happy days, but not at the time.
  16. Alan Day at the Torch, when he could get the needle on the track! Tony Jebb and Colin Curtis weren't dummies either
  17. A/ Not a coat nicker B/Didn't sit in the bogs to rip people off- at the Torch that was Desi's territory and there was only room for one in that pit. C/Too busy dancing and enjoying myself to get involved -intentionally. D/Couldn't escape it, there are threads re the walk from Mr M's to the Main Room at Wigan, 100% crooks, depends where you come from, some places are more infamous and have a propensity for crime more than others. E/From 69 till 76 never went to a nighter without gear and /or some way of getting it, don't think I ever met anyone straight, F/Met Dave Godin at Wigan and a few other places, thought he was a sound guy , if a little different, but he lost a load with Right On. Lastly, read Andrew Wilson's book - Northern Soul Music, Drugs and the sub cultural identity which echoes my views, all of which are me looking fondly back to great times and adventures with reality which meant both good and bad deeds Lastly, left school at 18 and went to University Don't regret one minute except for selling Pirelli's and keeping Daps
  18. Didn't long John Baldry do an all nighter there c 68 bank holiday -i.e.mod and rocker era? I have have a recollection of being there at an all nighter then and subsequently being told that Rod Stewart and Elton John where in the backing band, but I was 14 and it was an allnighter near Skegness, so could be wrong! After all in those days a bank holiday weekend in Skeg was something!
  19. You met Sandi Sheldon? Did she really exist?. this is on a par with someone seeing Janette White sing "Music" live. Fuck me, shaking hands with Major Lance at the Torch - second show on first night, kissing PP Arnold in Newcastle and being asked if I was one of the Soul Twins at Stoke(with Graham) from Derby pale into absolute zero. Gutted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  20. Thanks for the support, I had had a few ales with Tim Finch and Dave Bonsall in the afternoon and that's what got the mind ticking. Yes , knew Hector well , used to go to the Brit together on the train from Derby on a Friday along with the Gillanders brothers. Can't place Bob Booth though? I suppose you also meant both Clouds and Cleos Anyway reality as to whay really went off at almost every alnighter needs to sink in to a few. We weren't fucking hippies for gods sake, peace and love, but to read some people you'd think we were, everyone was socialable because of the gear, but as always, money and position was there, hence the stories that anyone who was really into the "subculture" knows only too damn well. luckily I came from Derby! As an aside and reading some of your earlier posts, you're not from the Winchester area are you? Shelly quote name='dthedrug' timestamp='1283047617' post='1401931'] HI ALL I COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT BETTER, YOU ARE 100% CORRECT, I WORKED IN THE MUSIC BUISNESS FOR A WHILE, AND THE PEOPLE WHO I RAN INTO WERE PROPER C*NZ POSERS WITH OPEN DENIM SHIRTS WITH A PACKET OF WINSTON IN THE POCKET CARRYING BRIEF CASES A DRIVEING RANGE ROVERS, THEY NEEDED MONEY AS THE COUNTRY HAD A 3 DAY WEEK?(A GREAT TIME FOR US CHEMIST ROBBERS) THE STUPID GOINGS ON WITH THE CUMMINGS & GODIN WAS PITIFUL, YOU NOW KNOW WHERE IAN LAVINE GOT HIS MANNERISMS FROM, WELL DONE! I BET YOU WENT TO CLOES AND NO HECTOR FROM SELECTOR BOB BOOTH ET ALL:ph34r: DAVE KIL
  21. Sorry, but I have to disagree with the above comments, T Cummings et al were trying to sell magazines, 1974 was a competitive era in the music press. What they succeded in doing was opening up a closed scene to the masses, prior to then it was faces, there was little or no publicity, but when you travelled, be it footy or what, you saw and regonised the people, it was special, top boys and girls. The journalistic efforts of T Cummings and F Elson where an ego trip that caused a/ opening of the scene to all and b/ other media interest, not at all positive. In fact Black Music magazine had a real go re the "social issues" , I had a letter published in said magazine c 1974 defending the scene against the tirade of abuse that was being generated, actually won letter of the month, the key was my quort for Edwin Stars Back Street "People stick together one for all, all for one, where they don't care how much money you got so long as your having fun"surely that what soul is. If that meant robbing chemists.taking copious amounts of gear, ripping off people for their records and gear- and vice versa(unfortunately twice) then so be it, so lets get real and stop this rose spectricle crap. The only two journalists who understood where Dave Godin and John Abbey, neither of whom resorted to exploitation, but could have milked it unmercifully shoud they have wished long before Cummings and Elson.
