Future Of Northern Soul
Yes I know this mate, I think you've missed my point - I'm talking about people that are new to the Scene writing off good oldies because they 'some how' see them as old hat - How the f*ck can someone see something as old hat when they have only been on the Scene 5 minutes? All the best, Len

Abso'f*ckin'lutely - Well said that man! Also, they are missing out on so much by doing so. All the best, Len

Future Of Northern Soul
Yes I know some new folk who seemed to have quickly 'worked out' what they see as 'cool', and have written off all the Oldies when they didn't know a thing a very short while ago - Bit strange that, but true. Another 'strange' one - I knew this guy who had a box of pressings that he had accumulated over the years - I loved playing through them at his house......fast forward a year, all of a sudden he's a D.J, and all the pressings (his memories) have disappeared.....people get so confused...... All the best, Len P.s - I love my Oldies - We're still playing them because they are good!

Whats The Difference Between A Good Dj And A Great Dj?
Do you think this is more necessary at a Soul night than an All-nighter? I feel it is needed / great at both, but have been to a nighter where the mike wasn't used much at all, and I commented on that fact - Answer being, the music speaks for itself, and going by the 'alive' atmosphere it was obviously 'working' for everyone there - A nighter situation is different, but I personally still like a bit of Mike usage wherever - If only to let us know what the records are called every so often....I also think apart from the music of course, the mike usage helps bring the D.J's personality across......If they're havin' a good time - so will we! Sorry mate, I normally catch anything you throw 'out there'....and return with something that bit funnier ....Alas, I I've had the kids (5 and 8) with me at work since after School, and they have 'f*ckin' worn me out That did cross my mind actually - Hey, I'm sure 'we'll meet one day'....and I'll tell you where the Bass and Treble are....I may even show you where the 'Gain' is.....and tell you what it is Ok folks, back on track - Carry on Very interesting topic this, and I do hope naming a few names as examples doesn't matter - When I say 'Classic' D.J, I mean the type that were doing it when it was so opposite to it being a D.J making someone 'God like' - as in the 'Fat Boy Slim Shape' era. They are a 'breed' that I fondly remember.....hang on, that don't read back right now You know what I mean All the best, Len

? Two dimensional world confusing me - I was giving out a compliment (without 'stroking' I hope!).....I'm not Butch, if you were getting me confused (Slightly different Sir names) To further explain what I mean - If Butch decided to retire and give me all his records (or anyone for that matter) I don't think 'Harrythehog' (post 44) who has been travelling to see him D.J, would travel to see me (or whoever) play his tunes - It wouldn't be the same. I love the old 'Classic' D.J's and is why I mentioned Nick 'Topsy' Turvey Len

In this instance, Butch's records are all he needs, but I do think the work he has put in gives him a 'presence' anyway - He doesn't need to tell jokes like us lot! I do like a D.J to have a unique style that sets him apart. I often see people comment that some D.J's don't even know how to use the equipment - This may be important on some Scenes, but on our Scene you just need to know which sliders, where the Bass, Treble and Gain is, and that's about it - I'm no expert on all this new fangled kit, and have no interest to be - I just play my records and use the mike (Just enough I hope) All the best, Len

Has The Bottom Fallen Out Of Cheaper Record Sales?
Ain't that a fact - Where's the fun in that aye?....The internet has made it all too easy, which to some I know is seen as a good thing, but I see it as a bad thing. I liked the fact that lots of 'work' went into buying records - whether you are a man that went over to the States when Alan Wicker was the only other person on the plane, or one who traipsed through tapes, going to places, asking about stuff, and then pestering the dealers at dead on 9.00am, after the list came through the post! Ref the topic - As we all know, people are skint - I haven't bought a record in ages (for that reason) choosing to 'regurgitate' and enjoy what I already have on the shelves. I expect people are now also less likely to be in the record bars at events because of the internet, so socialise / dance instead when they are out 'n' about - Shame that, as seeing a 'buzzing' record bar was an important part of the night. Whats The Difference Between A Good Dj And A Great Dj?
Doh! Love it. I personally find it really interesting - People's 'take' on what makes a great D.J. As I'm one who has posted on here......I have to really work hard at putting a set together, always have done (which seems to work ok) Whereas these 'Greats' seem to do it with no effort, and power to them All the best, Len

I'm completely opposite to this - I like a D.J to present his records in a certain style, it makes all the difference to me, and is what makes an atmosphere in my opinion. All the best, Len

Whats The Difference Between A Good Dj And A Great Dj?
There was a bit on the Soul in the Bowl events thread about a D.J called Nick 'Topsy' Turvey (Banbury Radio) Although it turned into an O.V.O 'discussion' (which is not for here) he is a great D.J in my opinion, with a real 'presence'. He's one of the 'old skool' D.J's that has done years of Radio, weddings, various parties, and also does the Northern thing - he comes across so natural, and he's hilarious - great, if that's what you like / are in the mood for Although years of experience must help, I think some are made for the job, and some are not - that's it. All the best, Len

You're never gonna 're-live' it, no matter how hard you try (it's an age thing).......You simply must 'get out now and then' - force yourselves if you have to, because once you stop, it's so hard to 'prize' yourself off that sofa - I've watched people do it, and they are the ones that seem to moan the most, almost as if an excuse for them staying in (some mates included) All the best, Len

Ain't he just 'DA MAN' ? Len P.s - and he never minded saying when he didn't know a tune....admittedly, he usually forgot that he owned it, but still - such integrity

F*ck me - What are you 17 years old?.....It took me over 40 years to work that out, and embrace it! - Good on ya mate ....I'll now go and read your second paragraph Len P.s - 'over ground' is the new 'under ground'

Whats The Difference Between A Good Dj And A Great Dj?
Soul Sam - a GREAT D.J. He has an attraction that isn't 'just' his records - he's 'quirky'......unlike some that just 'stand and wait for the record to finish'......that's the only way I know how to explain it....There are subtle, but massive differences that make a D.J stand out. All the best, Len

Yes that's true, and one place that shows that so well is The 100 Club - Ady must have seen 4 generations of punters pass through his 'lovely system'.......the old b*stard .....They'll never do it as well as I did though I have to admit that being negative is easy - A bit of positivity is the key I feel All the best, Len

Because the scene ain't what it was for some of us - But I'm all for 'grabbing what ya can' out of it in a positive way, because it's better than getting old on the sofa (I stopped moaning a few years ago) All the best, Len

What I like about you (correct me if I'm wrong here) is the fact that you are not influenced by anyone - I expect you like the 'Oldies what you like', and the 'Newies what you like', and (hopefully) there is no line in-between for you - F*ckin' healthy that I'd say. You mentioned your parents background - Maybe your attitude is a testament to them. All the best, Len

He's a nice lad, with a great attitude - He came up from the Peterborough area to Boomerang in Thorne, Yorkshire last Sat night, and had a ball. All the best, Len

BRILLIANT! Len P.s - I have a new hobby of reading threads backwards

Wigan Bashers
The people I have met over the years that went to Wigan and carried on their ‘hobby’ since, hardly ever mention the place - they are just getting on with what they started there. Yes, it was something that had never been seen before, and Wow - I wish I’d experienced it……..but I didn’t, I was a baby….. …..Over my years I have listened to ‘advise’, and many lectures off people that ‘popped’ into Wigan, thinking because of that they know better…….I now know they ‘so’ don’t. Respect to the people that went and got the true spirit from such an incredible experience, but b*llox to those that never understood. My personal history (100 Club etc) is just as important to me, and I have very strong bonds with people that have the same mind set, no matter what era they started out. All the best, Len
