  1. big blackpool mecca tune if i'm not mistaken, but a revelation to find out she's white.....she certainly sounds black....and yes, what a great tune to dig out again, coincides with the thread already on here about long forgotten tunes.
  2. that was what was played at wigan, ot the vocal, bit of a difference with the r n'r original...just that the advance acetate sounded more atmospheric and almost like it could have been recorded in the 60's.....though it wasn't!
  3. i'm not arguing!...it's just there, isn't it?...we could have the same discussion about the merits of levine's productions, the fact is his stuff from 76 got played, was danced to and bought...the same innocent naeivity we displayed then as with soussan...we all grew up a long time ago and grew out of it, perhaps it's our obsession with OVO that drives us to sweep that period in our history, under the carpet, but we can't escape from the fact that it happened.
  4. you're right paul, the vast majority was contrived stuff, one wouldn't be seen dead near it now...but that was back then when we were new to the scene. the sharonettes was huge at the casino and, as a point of fact, so was the terrifics - i cant get enough ( johnny sayles ) at the catacombs of all places.. soussan however, was responsible for an enormous amount of original content coming to light...as well as bootlegging it...how ironic is it, in this day & age, that many of these boots are fetching as much in monetary terms as the myriad of £30 - £40 tunes we all tout as deserving to be played, that just don't get a look-in. i used to think the sharonettes record was awesome...back then in 74/75 ( cant be precise ), but going to the casino was like a kid in the sweetie shop, it was all new and amazing and everybody else thought that at the time...and you just danced to everything!. the record in question had its moment in the spotlight, which instantaineously disappeared upon its release on black magic.
  5. did i say 5k?.....OOOPS!!......THINK WE'RE LOOKING AT 7K NOW??..... WATCH OUT EDDIE PARKER!
  6. soussan cut acetates first which were a different take to the one cut on blackmagic, these had a slightly longer ghostly laugh at the start then violins but not with the vibes overdubbed, sounded more atmospheric in its day and naturally, everyone was blissfully unaware it was "manufactured" as opposed to being an original, which as everyone knows, was recorded by the rivingtons.
  7. i completely agree with the opportunist theory, some dimwit who dosn't know what they've got, i'd err on the side of caution though, mentioning tunes and their value, especially on fb or twitter which are open social sites, because a dimwit might have a contact who's more au fait about anything musical...don't give em an inch!. cctv has to be the immediate answer....god help the loser if it's caught by anyone on the scene, in posession....it wont just be the law that's broke.
  8. i had an old ford escort mk1, had it stolen from just outside wolvo town centre on a saturday afternoon, dead easy to break into these things....all you needed was a house key! i'd left two 50 boxes of sounds in the boot..gutted. phone call from police about 9pm, car found on side of main road barely half a mile from where it was pinched, what was the first thing i did?...open the boot...phew!, still in there...never been closer since
  9. breathtaking list of tunes!....really does blow yer socks off,......talk about needing a zimmer after dancing to that lot will definitely have to try and get to this place at some point...
  10. some tasty stuff in there guys, several mortgages i'll wager....
  11. no ste, but kev thinks he is! im just the piano player
  12. and just to add a little spice to the action, may 10th, we have a welsh invasion in the shape and form of karl rhodes, gerard hogan & steve thomas...these guys are kitted out with some serious tunes!
  13. we'll make this a regular feature as opposed to full lists and we'll get all concerned involved...gives people a clearer picture of what i'm talking about, it dosn't have to be out & out unknowns but it also dosn't have to follow the pattern of the top 500...we've been saying this for years now, to a man/woman...there's 10's of thousand's of tunes to go at, so many deserve their shot and the good thing is, there's plenty of folk with the intuition to allow this to happen. sure, the back room is bearing this out even more as the line-up of djs constantly changes and although you can see its the same residents in the main room, when we've got 1500-2000 records to choose from over a 4 1/2 hour period, we can offer consistancy where choice is concerned....that's honestly, no different from what most other venues are offering but we are trying to drive forward, hopefully people like what they hear and that when they attend the venue, be it for the first time, the atmosphere and dance floor alone, convinces them to visit again.. oh, and by the way...LOWTON IS ON, WILL BE ON IN FUTURE AND, UNTIL OTHERWISE, ACCEPT IT AS GOSPEL.
  14. 5k?....you would think so in the light of the recent sale of eddie parker, what did that realise?, 8k?.....larry clinton is up in the all-time top ten tunes & valuation and a red copy is blue moon time to 99% of collectors....the 1% who own it know they are minted...if kev murphy played the kings hall or the tower, you'd get to see it full screen...how good would that be?, the white demo is nice but bright red wins hands down!.
  15. great b-side, but it has been played....no surprises there then!
  16. me too.....definitely thank god!!
  17. why am i reading an "all over the place valuation"article?, isn't this indicative of the market in general?, with a few exceptions (imho ) the tempest's lp is £100 all day long but, was £50 all day long til its reactivation. in the case of clydene jackson it appears no one is clear on a definition so you pays yer money and takes yer choice which really confuses the issue...not like its being played again but then again, its perhaps never fallen out of favour, just waiting for "the reactivation...then, perhaps the valuation will clarify. i can site an instance that really infuriates me, one ive already mention on here, that of the fantastics - me & you on ss7...ive missed perhaps 7 copies and regardless of condition, the prices were all over the place. yes, i know condition essentially is paramount, but, putting that aside its a great record and obviously collectable and i genuinely think people who have it to sell havent got a clue what its worth, so when it yo-yo's between £140 - £70 and i still cant nail one on, i get really angry. you guys certainly dont help yourselves to deliver an authoritative version when your clutching prices out of thin air. the perfect world would reveal a tell-the-truth status quo for all vinyl, 7" or lp based on its collectability NOT just its condition........the reality is, we & vinyl have one thing in common..DNA in that, no two are ever the same.
  18. deffo a chicago label, better the oracles on here about the other theory
  19. that is a serious f**k off tune!.....just wish i had the cash
  20. well, i also posessed this lp until just recently, when one mr. searling commendeered it!...it didnt register at first but he must have sniffed something happening or perhaps, quite innocently, had been looking for a copy for a while...but then again the man has immense taste....then WOW!, jm is auctioning a copy, rung richard to let him know, very surprised, but in essence why shouldnt it be...it has to be quite obscure and this one must also be mint as well as the sleeve. THE standout track though, is "get hep to love"...is this CURTIS or not?, this would be right up mr. mayfield's repetoire...covering it up? ok, from the point of view of not too many people knowing it, i wouldn't bother, even though i no longer have it, fact is these were a talented enough group without having to resort to cloak & dagger.
  21. well done bro, i just think it gives people a more realistic idea of what to expect, to know its not just about anthems & classics, but about doing what every other venue should aspire to, providing as wide a ranging choice as possible and every dj/collector who gets asked to play here, will have their own ideas about what fits.
  22. so cool ian, value for money & an education.....just want mr. maleedy's tunes and what paul spun in the back room and that will just about cover it and to those browsing, its a big thumbs up to ovo in a thinking man's stylee
  23. Kev Murphy's top 5: ********************** charlie gracie - he'll never love you like i do volcano's - stay a little while c/u silhouettes - not me baby coasters - crazy baby montclairs - hey you, dont fight it
