Indeed. Why didn't I think of that?

Two sub threads really running - I'd summarise my view as Play OVO* and keep it interesting! *with the prior caveats before everyone starts going on about unissued stuf for the 5th time

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm the easy answer would be to blame the the proliferation of venues that sprung up in the late 90s to meet the new demand for northern soul. Those dullard DJs probably settled in shortly after.

When did some of them become DJs Macca?

Northern Soul On Bbc (east)

Ian Levine, Motorcity, Centre City, Blackpool Mecca, And Swons
Duffy and Amy not my idea of soul Ian. Raphael - I'll need to listen to his new CD, but his one a few years ago had a fabulous track on it but it didn't sell. Legend - yes good. HOWEVER I am still not convinced that this is the second coming of soul music. There has always been good new release soul - just not so much of it compatred to the 60s / 70s.

Hi Jocko I have never ducked a challenge, and believe in what I believe in. I think there is more chance of Spurs winning the Premiership btw

Ha ha haven't heard this expression for at least a month. Agree there are some DULLARDS who hide behind original vinyl. For the fourth time - Have no problem with unissued stuff being replayed - all these guys not active on the sex northern soul scene who are asking loads of questions on this - yes unissued stuff is fine to play ...... whatever format.... What we are talking about is DJs who are LAZY and UNIMAGINATIVE and cannot string a set together without resorting to boots and lookey likey pressings. Without being dullards

I have an orig Ted, and I know the orig isn't brilliant - this one was well down on volume and the treble was right up - as I say sounded like cut off of a casette. Steve

Havent played a northern bootleg since I was a schoolkid. Sorry to burst that bubble Di. Any DJ worth their salt can put together an hour of originals without having to resort to boots.

Funny you should say that - heard a spin for Lester Tipton last year and it sounded such an awful copy - like a carver had been cut from a cassette or something. We all agreed, that ain't an original - it sounds so awful.

Asked and answered twice already Sean. I have meself played the Hesitations for example at venues. No qualms about that at all and it's 100 times better than hearing Billy Woods yet again. CD tracks are hypothetical as hardly any northern venues have CD players. At a northern venue you KNOW there will be decks but don't know whether there will be a CD or even two, and that I think drives the Carver culture for unissued stuff. Plus as Pete S says CD's don't have the same "feel" as a "rekkid"

Oh yes` - blatant piracy

O.v.o And C.r.&.p Venues
I feel exactly the same - clear the floor at least once or youre playing too safe, but you MUST get it back again.

O.v.o And C.r.&.p Venues
drax does apparantly In all seriousness yes most northern nights do not have such technology as CD players for the unreleased stuff. ANyway you don't have to justify it Russ. My unissued stuff is on carver, just I don't play them that often.

O.v.o And C.r.&.p Venues
Yes and will add to the list. I haven't been adding venues until promotors say. but Spalding is a top night.

As always an articulate and well put case, and certainly when you look at crossover / 70s orientated venues, I know there is a more tolerant attitude. You know me well enough to know that I love venues like 3Gs etc. (and will add them to the list along with the "Lets book Steve G" Orwell ) and certainly am one who plays across the board do use different formats - just not at northern soul nights. I have played The Hesitations on Kent (last years anniversary single) by way of example. I do know the corners can get blurred and I've always played new releases too. What we're really on about is playing northern soul reissue CDs (great for the car) and those nasty styrene pressings with the 6 digit Delta numbers of old cheesy "favourites" like "Wanted and needed" etc.(not so great for the car).

the only time I've heard this out in donkeys years was when I had the honour to guest alongside Kenny Burrell in Rimini last year. It's not still getting played is it??? Go to venues most weeks and you just don't hear it.

But no one is forced to DJ are they? Still think it's a mix of laziness and ignorance to DJ with bootlegs.

O.v.o And C.r.&.p Venues
Bingo - todays inapropriate banding about of the word "nazi". If ever a word was overused etc etc...... Why do you say you have mixed feelings Rod- then say you don't have a problem with Billy Bunter playing pressings. Where's the mixed feelings in that? Is there another side to your argument? If so what is it?
