That first one was packed as he had a full editorial write up in Dazed & Confused that month including the full back cover ad with the red cirlce on the dance floor bit and "your spot on the dance floor" statement. Listening to Richard Searling last night another innovator from the same era, but ego compared with Levine? No comparison. Searling far more gracious, a character trait perhaps IL forgot a long time ago. For me this is a Southern thing. Dazed & Confused April 2002 "Soul, Sweat and Speed: The new home of Northern Soul". This piece I believe was the origin of the statement "Ian Levine declares war on the soul clubs of London". We don't know the chronology of events regarding the Rocket and Crossfire. However this mission statement was not something that was to me usual for the scene, or necessary. But perhaps typical of an over inflated ego has been. He was a guest dj once at the 100 Club. I say once, he's not been back since. That's not my place to say, but I would be interested to hear Ady Croasdell's point of view regarding Mr Levine. Not that he needs to be put on the spot, perhaps it's more gracious to say nothing. Therefore in conclusion Ian Levine was and still is a northern soul VIP, no question. Is he a nice person? I don't know or care. Does he have a reputation as a trouble making ego maniac handful? Not for me to say. Lastly we were doing fine in the the South for soul before Levine showed up, he needn't have bothered really those Rocket do's were poorly attended, pi$$ed off southern soulies boycotted most of them so only an amount of time before the inevitable closure and a swift exit, tail firmly between the legs.

Be interesting to know the chronology of events. What came first the war declaration, or the sabotage? Maybe if he plans a return visit to the south, he should come armed with more than the Snake and Interplay!

That's the one, pity cos we could have been dancing to Gene Toones until six at Crossfire, instead of listening to the Snake at the Rocket and Interplay.

No doubt the man is a legend. Groundbraking stuff at the Highland Room etc. Take That's first producer? Maybe or urban myth, dunno. However the mission statement when he was at the Rocket couple of years back, "Ian Levine declares war on London's soul clubs". That and scuppering Crossfire's all night licence leaves a bit of a bad taste to be honest.

I have been surprised and impressed by SS members dogged pursuit of chancers selling records. Fraudsters and chancers alike have been exposed, named and shamed. Some have joined this site in an attempt to defend their honour (Mr 'Mega Rare' Fosland for one) and this has perhaps done them some good. Others have stayed silent and secretive - what ever happened to Mr 'one hundred million dollars Gene Toones'? So members have a security blanket from ebay and other chancers out to rip us off. Thus far this thread proves JM is guilty off nothing more then selling records for the best price he can get. Something that was never a secret in the first place. Ian Sims.

Agreed. I know we marvel at his prices at times, but as far as the auctions are concerned they're driven by the punters. He sold an Ace Spectrum for me some time back on his auction. Everything went smoothly, it went for top dollar and I ended up with a couple of nice singles I'd been after and a decent chunk of change. JM is reputable and trustworthy in short. His records are always in good nick as described. Although he's quite a busy boy, if you phone him with a query, he'll usually take your call. Pretty much and all round good egg imo. Be a bit miffed if he wasn't around.

These dude's should be pitied then really. Or at least encouraged to get out more. There's no substitute for experience, you can't buy it. Think back to when we were nineteen and stuff you picked up and maybe forgotten. But it's always there, stored in the vaults as it were. Plenty of nighters on still, can't dance in front of your pc, unless you're a prat. You can't solely experience the northern scene from home, like comparing Sky Sports 1 with the north bank at Highbury.

Agreed Good dancer imo - a little uptempo. Thought Eddie Bishop was just a great oldie. Don't hear it played out much these days though. Dunno about the north, but gonna put that right next year, eh Chalks
