  1. Trip over to where exactly?
  2. Wouldn't know dude. Try wants or look at your box. Wouldn't hold your breath as it's a soul forum etc. Best bet to PM JTrouble, he's a bit of a funkster (so to speak) he was on line earlier.

Funk is a bit crap. Some of the James Brown stuff is okay. Calling him the Godfather of soul though is bollocks. You do seem to get quoted and replied to quite a little bit Pete. (I'm not stalker #3 btw). Think it may have to do with your not backward in coming forward stance. Don't change it though for Christ's sake.
  4. If DG's era was the late sixties/early seventies, then he should be first on the list. It was time spent at the Twisted Wheel that prompted Dave Godin to write about 'Northern Soul' for the first time in Blues & Soul. Soul City's output born in mind and he doesn't warrant a mention even on the subs bench?
  5. Catchy term. Who came up with that again?
  6. A reshuffle and still no Dave Godin? Surely we don't need to say why! He ain't even on the fringe. No E in Ady BTW.
  7. More than a hint of sarcasm in that statement me thinks. Though, I'd put him in cos of Wigan. As previously stated Dave Godin too, he has to be in there.
  8. Don't know these dudes. I recommend taking them out (not literally) and replacing them with Pat Brady (legendary collector/dealer/DJ). Also Ady Croasdell for his discoveries and bringing rare soul to the masses through his associations with Kent/Ace. Oh and as promoter of the longest running all nighter ever.

Capitol Soul Club was good in the early days, packed. Lots of dance floor drinkers - non soul fans along for a gawp and a pint. Scenesville was and is good, but suffers from lack a permanent venue. These Old Shoes was good, but isn't on anymore. So there's not a lot really. Heard mixed reports about the Dome - in Events from the last one, the feedback seemed pretty positive, though a text from a mate said otherwise.

  19. Whats that got to do with the mum's and dad's and allnighters thing dog?
  20. I'll come to Pikey in a moment. No, I understand this was just a curiosity after (and I can't recall who it was) someone said that NS fans don't necessarily come from a scootering background. Definitely not looking down on anyone - as stated at top of thread. Nothing wrong with being proud. If I met an NS fan who went to the wheel and everything since, I'd be well impressed.
  21. Nah, wouldn't fit timewise really would it.
  22. Somebody wrote recently that all northern soul fans came from a scootering background. Somebody else quickly corrected them. In truth I think it doesn't matter where you come from or what age you are if you like the music, that should be all that matters. However, someone out there must have a pure 100% Northern Soul pedigree. Eighteen Soul Source members registered in the 50+ category which means some of them could have made it to the Wheel and everything since. If perhaps they were born within say a fifty or so mile radius of Manchester (as a central northern city), and got into rare soul maybe from an elder brother/sister or word of mouth - (but not another scene). This sort of history would perhaps be a prime pedigree for a pure northern soul fan. Maybe younger northerner's missed the Wheel & Torch and started out at Wigan. Although not around from the start this would still be quite impressive. Not taking this too seriously and disappearing up one's own jacksy! But as a thirty nine (in August) year old Southerner, all I have to be proud of is twenty two years of faith and that's about it. Some are more northern than others. Does anyone care? Is anyone proud to have a solid northern history? Does anyone know if such an individual exists? Would be interested to know.
  23. Off Topic Quicky, sorry Love the avatar Dan!
  24. Each to his own Chalk, each to his own. With you on the no comparison thing, albeit in a round about way.
  25. Matt, Surprised me in all honesty that you would describe Otis Redding's vocal talents as 'very ordinary'. Such a rich soul singing voice. His voice blew the Stax people away. He put James Carr in the shade and eclipsed Sam & Dave 's live performances. Booker T played piano on the These arms of mine demo and admitted he was paying more mind to listening to Otis' voice than playing the piano. This is not the legacy of an artist that's very ordinary. You can never be on too much of a Jackie trip mate! He was fantastic. I keep wrestling with preference between him, Otis and Sam Cooke. JW has the amazing wailing emotion. Otis, the rich all soulful vocal. And Sam Cooke seems to have a blend of the two. So sometimes I think he's #1. However I keep coming back to Jackie and with the amount of quality discs that made it big on the Northern scene (fave overall music) he remains closest to the heart. SWONS sounds p1ss poor - front room? Toothless? Crass psychedelic visuals! As for Stax playing the more prominent role in selling soul to white folks. Maybe a grittier, soulful style counts for something. But then do you reclassify the Supremes as pure pop and not soul? Tough one, but under the Motown banner they just nick it as soul imo. Supremes were the number one selling soul group in the US. Marvin Gaye was number two and the Temptations were number three. So I think prominence accolade really has to go to Motown generally speaking. All good stuff mate. Looking forward to your set at next 100 Club. Simsy. PS, I note your JW edit 'And whose husky range is shatteringly poor next to the emotive complexities of the Brunswick hero.' There aren't big enough words to describe Jackie's fantasticness (there's a word)! Otis may have a limited range by comparison. However that huskiness you speak of and his delivery was a unique and awesome contributory factor to Otis' greatness.
