  1. Another book about the industry (although not necessarily about the distribution) to have is Record Makers and Breakers: Voices of the Independent Rock 'n' Roll Pioneers (Music in American Life) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Record-Makers-Breakers-Independent-Pioneers/dp/025207727X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1318538211&sr=1-1 Review "Covering the convoluted history of the recording industry from the 1940s to the 1960s, [broven] combines in-depth archival research with fascinating anecdotes about chart-toppers, shady characters and label owners... The impact of conniving entrepreneurs on the musicians and the layering of rich details and digressive detours as Broven traces the transition from R & B to rock make this equal to Roger D. Kinkle's massive, four-volume Complete Encyclopedia of Popular Music and Jazz." --Publishers Weekly "Broven is masterful, making Record Makers an essential book for anyone interested in not only American musical culture but American culture, period." American Songwriter "A rich and engaging history ... A first-rate picture of how this whole rock 'n' roll thing got started." --New York Daily News "4 stars. Welcome to a world filled with payola, the mob and jukebox sounds." --Mojo Product Description This volume is an engaging and exceptional history of the independent rock 'n' roll record industry from its raw regional beginnings in the 1940s with R & B and hillbilly music through its peak in the 1950s and decline in the 1960s. John Broven combines narrative history with extensive oral history material from numerous recording pioneers including Joe Bihari of Modern Records; Marshall Chess of Chess Records; Jerry Wexler, Ahmet Ertegun, and Miriam Bienstock of Atlantic Records; Sam Phillips of Sun Records; Art Rupe of Specialty Records; and many more.

The shiny label copies were done from the same stampers as Russ says although don't think they have the music city stamp the originals have. Crock O Sh*te IMO....far better Carolinas records out there than this.
  4. Wiggyflat and anyone else, just a reminder that if going to post videos like the one above with adult content that to some is offensive and certainly not work safe can you post a warning along with the video. Some people have no wish to open a video and find content such as in the one posted. Thanks.
  5. I doubt it will put an end to the boot vs original topics but hey ho life goes on. Members have the choice whether to read the topics or not and it amazes me why some go and read them then complain. I have to read them regardless or as much as possible.
  6. I could add are you a promoter, dj collector or none of the above if thats is what you want? As far as I know anyone can vote. I would have thought that the vast majority who read SS are members, there are 16000 after all.
  7. You wanted a poll as to whether people want to hear boots or originals, thats what you got. How do you come to the conclusion that the majority of voters are either collector, DJ's or promoters? 139 members have voted so far and know one knows whether they are simply dancers or take a more active roll in the scene.
  8. The poll nothing to do with DJing. It is to do with what the ordinary person expects or wants from the dj's and the music they listen to. I'm sure most go out far more as a punter than as a Dj.
  9. The subject of question 2 was brought up in the promoters topic so thought I'd throw it in as it does cover your night out.
  10. I see some at venues including all-nighters who rarely venture inside, spending most of the night outside. can never understand paying a tenner and stopping outside 80% of the night.
  11. should be the option to delete your vote, same place you cast your vote
  12. I would have thought the Don't Care option covers 4 of your answers? Tried to keep it simple, personally know what I want from a night out but others wanted a poll.
  13. its just another question to see what people want from a night out, not really boots/originals
  14. I've added that Matt but really don't want to complicate this any more than need to.
  15. I'v paid to get into venues where I know a boot or two will get played but those sort of nights, usually local are more a social occasion, a pint and a bit of soul music than a night out where the music of my preference will be on offer (hopefully). I did think about a third option along the lines of a local social nought but wasn't sure how to word it.
  16. I thought the quality classics covered that bit but I've added the option for you
  17. I'm sure we had a poll once before and boots in that were pretty much frowned upon, pretty much the same as the topic talk really, most of that is against boots.
  18. I'd forgotten to uncheck the the make poll public box or summat like. So deleted and done another. Left out the two questions for promoters and DJ's as you had to vote on all to have vote cast.
  19. after some teething problems on the first poll (forgot to uncheck a box so votes wouldn't be public) poll re-done. I've excluded the promoter and DJ questions as wouldn't let you vote if didn't select these. So once again for those who are interested (some did say they weren't interested)......
  20. Poll for those of you who are interested.... /forums/topic/211824-poll-your-night-out/
  21. For a record that you rarely see I was surprised at the price. Excellent record and well worthy of more spins. It's in my playbox and does get played.
  22. But any expenses incurred harassing Simsy would far far outweigh any recompense that could come their way. I doubt they would get past first base? He has only done one cut for dj purposes and not as a money making scheme. If he'd booted it then I could fully understand the Jackson Estate seeking recompense. It is on a Collectables CD isn't it....maybe DJ's should play the cd instead, bout time promoters put cd decks in anyway The original acetate was bought in good faith, it was in a poor state so cuts taken. These were then traded on. Others had further cuts done in more recent times. Look at the amount of acetates on ebay, if the record companies were bothered then they could begin their actions there, Bell Sound acetates for instance appear often on ebay now and then. The label owned by Sony isn't it? They aren't bothered until someone starts making money out of their material.
  23. some of the biggest and most expensive records on this scene came about via dodgy means, Frank Wilson being the biggest, I didn't see Motown going after Kenny or Tim. The exposure probably made them more money.
  24. what is so funny? I know some who have bought studio tapes from producers in the states, some via the internet. What is wrong with doing a cut of a track on them? Possesion 9/10ths of the law. If you've bought something in good faith them you can't really be held accountable.
