A quick note for all those planning to come down to Scenesville by car. The best place to park is on the roads immediately to the East of Edgeware Road (ie going in towards Central London). Try especially Seymour Place and Upper Berkeley Street, both just across the road from the venue. There should be tons of parking available on these roads or just off them. Roads to the West of Carisbrooke Hall have a lot of residents-only parking restrictions and you may waste time trying to find a space. The roads to the East are governed by single yellow lines which go out of force at 1:30 pm on a Saturday - though a few go out of force at 8:30pm so check signs on individual roads if parking up before 8:30. To see what I'm on about check out the multimap link at https://www.scenesville.info/directions.htm or go straight to https://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?lat...le=10000&icon=x Remember also, THERE IS NO CONGESTION CHARGE ON SATURDAYS. See you there! All the best, Nick- The Best Retro Soul Song Ever

Gabrielle was the first track that sprung to mind when I saw this thread - brilliant record. Always reminds me of Lorraine Chandler's "Tell Me You're Mine". Lyrics aside, The Edwin Collins was a corker, and worked wonders at turning the Britpop generation onto our sound. Current top contender for me is a really good track out at the moment by Estelle called "Go, Gone" which has a very authentic 60s Southern Soul stomper feel to it - you have to hear it on the radio, though, because the video is a bit distracting and you don't quite get the full effect. Still, if you need to catch it it's on reasonably heavy rotation on MTV etc. Check it out. All the best, Nick- Scenesville's Floorshaking Fifty
Looking at the list, has Andy Rix come out of retirement for the event or sold some of his records? Hi Hippo, No, Andy's still not involved in the scene and he hasn't sold any records. Some (but not all!) of the records that have caught your eye are from Rob Thomas's playlist. Andy & Rob have always worked as a partnership when it comes to digging up records, and they have DJd from the same box for many years, and this is still the case, even though it's only Rob doing it these days!. Rob doesn't always get the credit he deserves for the finds he's made over the years, and many of the top Scenesville sounds that Andy used to play are technically from the 'Rob section' of the box, including "Switch Around", Not The Marrying Kind", "Try My Love" and many others. Rob has always been a strong supporter of Scenesville and has actually guested in his own right three times, which makes him the ideal person to headline the night, with a set that celebrates the best of Scenesville so far and takes the sounds one step further with even more stunning new discoveries in the true spirit of Scenesville. Check out in particular the Linda And The Pretenders acetate with a different take of "Believe Me" and the astonishing Detroit Magnificents track - soul-stirring stuff! Personally, I think he's going to take the roof off - but we'll all have to wait until the night to see how! All the best, Nick- Scenesville's Floorshaking Fifty
Latest news from Scenesville is that work continues apace on the big website upodate for Scenesville's mega one-off at Carisbrooke Hall. Sorting through the DJs' playlists I noticed that the five Scenesville residents' top 20s make up a pretty handy Hot 100. For the sake of space here's a condensed 'Floorshaking Fifty' that should give you a bit of a flavour of what's lined up for the big do on the 23d. Hi Chalky, I've got it on a tape somewhere - Vince Ayres from Yate used to have it and he put it on a sales tape for me once. If I can dig it out I'll convert it into a file & send it to you. I've also got a tape of him playing it at the 100 Club in about '90/91, think it was the first night Dawn DJd there. I've always thought it's a really good record, but could never make up my mind whether it was just the right side or just the wrong side of too frantic for my tastes. Definitely one of the under-appreciated tracks on the scene. Obscenely rare, but you'd probably pay more for a Dottie & Millie these days , which says something about the scene, I guess. I'll try & look it out today. All the best, Nick- What 45 Would You Make Into A

Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure I heard the record introduced over the mike at the Rocket as The Parisians, and I'm wondering if it was actually Mick H who played it - he was on right before Guy. Anyone able to confirm with Mick or Guy? All the best, Nick- Twinkle Little Star
OK, it goes like this: PARISIANS- Twinkle Little Star - DEMON HOT 1 TRADITIONS - Twinkle Little Star - ABET 9435 Different recordings - Parisians is almost certainly a White Group with Soul ambitions, Traditions is a Black Group and has slightly more in the way of funky tom-toms and general 'Soul feeling', but overall, the two records have a very similar treatment and could easily be confused with each other if not heard side by side. Difficult to work out which is the original, as the Parisians flip is a semi-instrumental reworking of the topside and the Traditions flip is a cover version, so you don't get any clues from the composer credits, but my vote goes to the Parisians being the original. Seen the Parisians at around £400 a year or two ago, but considering it was £3 at the end of the '80s this would indicate that it's been a fastish riser in recent years, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was a shade above that today, though I wouldn't expect £1000 quite yet. Traditions is about 500 times rarer in comparison, but very, very little known, probably because of its rarity, which really is extreme. Manship vol 1 listed Parisians at £200 and Traditions at £150, but this reflects collectors' awareness of the respective records rather than their relative rarity. I doubt it will remain like that for long, mind, as I've heard Butch playing the Traditions' version at the 100 Club recently, so expect awareness to grow. Hope this helps clear up any foggy areas. Hi Pete, UK RCA Victor did a series of 6 track EPs of 20s & 30s Blues artists in the mid-60s, presumably to tie in with the British Blues Boom of the time. I've got vol 4 Julius Daniels and vol 6 Doctor Clayton, but unfortunately these don't give details of other titles in the series, so I can't check to see if your 6-track was intended for the series or not. The EPs have the catalogue numbers RCX 7175 and RCX 7177 respectively, so if you find another number in the sequence written somewhere on the sleeve or something, this may place it in the series. Also not sure if titles in pre-production for RCA Victor would use EMIdiscs or if the EMI bit is a red herring in this case. Alternatively, it may have nothing to do with the above, in which case, ignore me. Still an interesting item, whatever it turns out to be. All the best, Nick- Twinkle Little Star
Tell you what, let's cut to the chase - Bazbond, which version are you talking about, mate? All the best, Nick- Twinkle Little Star
Thought they were both 60s...? Just had a look and I can't find any Abet release dates - wondering if this tipped over into the 70s or something. Bring me up to speed on this one, folks. All the best, Nick- Love Making Tunes
The Springers - Every Night And Day - Ves Thad. Pure emotion on vinyl. Not got a sound file - anyone got one to put up? All the best, Nick- Sad News - Ray Pollard
Very sad news. Ray Pollard was one of the greatest singers I ever heard. I remember reviewing a Wanderers record in Shades Of Soul and saying he had tonsils of gold, but not the tawdry metal sort, but the bottomless pure gold of midsummer sunsets. That's how Ray's voice made me feel, and for years people would tell me that they felt the same way. Ray's records are in so many people's all-time favourites lists, and deservedly so. Total respect. Hi Chris, I'm sure I've got some photos of the Eddie & Lorraine night. I'm off to work now, but I'll try & dig them out later & see what I've got, & if they'll be of any use to you. All the best, Nick - Scenesville Parking Info
