  5. Can't choose between..... "ever since I met you baby I've been walkin' into closed doors" (Frankie Beverly & the Butlers - if that's what you wanted")......and "in the middle of the night I wake up screamin'" (Soul Twins - quick change artist) both are some of the first lyrics I heard at my first niter and at exactly the right moment to benefit from heightened perception ( A. Liker - Riker Town)
  6. Mopsey the MoJo's man's been recommending a trip to J36......looks like a good night!
  7. The direction that the music goes in at an event is ultimately down to the DJ's surely? They're the ones driving the bus. The promoter sets down the outline for the music policy and knows what to expect from the DJ's he appoints, but he's only the bus conductor "tickets please". The punters at both ends of the spectrum and those in the middle (and I would suggest that the majority fall in the middle, despite their appearance) are the passengers and all they can do is choose where to get on and off the bus. The fact that people aren't dancing to a particular record needn't be because they don't like or appreciate it, they might be in the middle of a chat, in the bog, at the bar, too knackered from their last dance or not confident enough to get up to a tune they may not be over familiar with. Even If only a few of the better dancers get up to a lesser known track, this will get the attention of people watching the floor and is likely to encourage them to follow suit. Maybe the connoisseurs ought to get up on the floor to make sure they keep gettin' what they prefer? I reckon that, regardless of the presumed persuasions of the punters, keeping the tempo right, with highs and lows in the right sequence and mixing up the lesser known stuff with the better known stuff should keep enough atmosphere in the room, which to me personally is more important than having a full dance-floor.

  10. Think the Wheel thing is perhaps to do with it being the 50th anniversary. In the events guide for this weekend's mini-niter, Pete Robert's says they've even got a special limited edition Twisted Wheel Ale brewed by Green King available for the night!! "No such thing as bad publicity"?

  16. Never got pulled at a niter, got ripped off and rolled as a youngster though, so used to drop it before we went in. Two near escapes though... One time me and Ronnie Hanley squeezed in the passenger seat of Bry Millard's triumph spitfire and we got pulled by a ford angela panda car a couple of miles from Wigan, just as we got out to be searched, a big noisy motor, zephyr or some such, went passed at about 70mph, so the bobbies said "be on yer way" and raced off to catch the "zephyr".....which was nice, especially as one of us had 10 years in their bag!!! The other time, me & Bry had scored off some lads from Rochdale. They got bubbled by a "mutual friend" who also bubbled Bry but only knew his surname. Bry's older brother, who was an old Wheelie, had a thriving business and a 911 was targeted by mistake, they searched his house and dug his garden up but found now't. We sh*t ourselves and I ended up wearing our stash round my waist for a week until we got shut!!!!

  22. just found this thread on here about Disco Classics, where "Frosty Jack" says the LP I've mentioned above was referred to in Vol 3 as being the first volume of the Disco Classics series....
  23. Yep, "Motown Memories - 16 Non-stop Tamla Hits" continuous play, no gap between tracks. In the spiel on the back cover he talks about the tracks being popular at "Discos"!! Don't know if it was a one off or part of a series.
