Jay Boy Records
That's right Pete, it was one of my first import 45's. Picked up the US copy in a local shop around 1970 for a couple of bob and after getting a UK Demo sold it to Andy Whitmore in '84. Lo and behold, in 1998 he turned up at The Phoenix with a small box of stuff for sale and I couldn't resist buying it back off him! Paid (just) a bit more than a couple of bob though... but it was nice to have one of my first collectors pieces back. Sean

Jay Boy Records
They toured as The Drifters, as I recall. As a schoolboy me and a mate went to The Broken Wheel at Retford (71 ish) to see the Drifters... and I'm sure it was actually the Invitations but didn't realise it at the time. Reminds me of the time my Sister went to see The Flirtations. They were billed as An 'Original Motown Group'... but (apart from The Flirtations never having recorded for Motown) turned out to be three Leggy Blondes... from Putney. Say no more! Sean Hampsey

...or Doris Willingham "You Can't Do That" ... or the 'other' (much more expensive but equally brilliant) Phillip Mitchell (The World Needs More People).... or James Conwell "Second Hand Hapiness"... Exciters "You Know It Aint Right" or even George McCrae "It's Been So Long".... no, he can't be Mel. Sean

Not Heard This Before
Heard a helluva lot worse! Wish they'd kept up the Joe Tex stylee rap throughout! Not bad though. Sean

What Was The First Record You Paid " Real " Mony For ?
I'd been buying soul records for 5-6 years, spending well less than a quid... when in 1974/5 I purchased a Garnett Mimms UK United Artists demo for the princely sum of £15.00 from Derek Sheldon. I was earning about £11.00 a week at the time as an Apprentice Brickie! Still remember the matrix number.... UP1130... and it set me off with a quest to own every UK released Soul record on Demo. Never quite got there though! Sean

Jay Boy Records
JayBoy was part of the President set up. Between those two labels they released scores of otherwise 'rare' or unobtainable Soul records. I'd have said that JayBoy was the bedrock of most UK Soulboys collections in the early 70's. Frown on 'em if you dare! Sean

The Dells
Wow... some compilation that with material from Chess, Mercury and 20th Century all on one slab... from the Grandfathers of Group Soul music. I played 'Closer' in the middle of the night at the last Soul Essence and the floor was in raptures! Also heard 'Don't Trick Me Treat Me' at some point during the weekend... another superb dancer. Can't fault these boys on Ballads either, can we. The Love We Had.... Always Together .... Standing Ovation.... I Touched a Dream... are all sublime. Pity about the shortage of ABC material on their though. I would have loved to have seen "Slipped, Tripped, Stumbled & Fell In" (possibly their finest hour) and "My Life Is So Wonderful" the superb uptempo fingersnapper! High quality release though. An essential purchase I'd have thought. Sean

Revelation
They had 1 album on RSO, 2 on RCA 2 on Handshake... that I'm aware of. Couldn't tell you which one fetches the most money these days.... but it's certainly not the Handshakes. I guess the RSO LP is the hard one! Sean

Great Looking Record Labels
You're right Steve. "That's How It Is" ... always rated it.

Revelation
Was touted as the vocal to The Brothers "Are You Ready For This" at the time. The flipside to "Get Ready For This" "Where It's Warm" is a stunning 'crossover type' number, well worth picking up. Worth mentioning that Revelation were the warm up act for The Bee Gees whilst at RSO... and later had a Northern MONSTER with "Feel It" on Handshake (one of the biggest tunes at Clifton Hall) also worth seeking out. So, anybody else got a copy of 'Sweet Talk & Melodies' that credits 'Revelation Movement' as the artist?. Bought it as a new release and it's always intrigued me that I've never seen another. Sean

While this thread is up, thought I'd mention that my UK 45 copy credits the artist as REVELATION MOVEMENT Anyone else got/seen one of these? Sean

Cd Of Lp Tracks November Swap
Me too Chris. Thinking Bank Holiday Monday before I even get into the collection. Still, I think we all prefer it when they land through the post box in phases rather than all at once. Sean
