Congratulations to Mike and the team, you made it the soul music site to visit, so many kind people producing articles about the artists and records and sharing their knowledge with others . Most people have a party to celebrate their 18th birthday, any such plans to celebrate the coming of age for SS? I think a drink or two is well deserved. The venue we visit every Friday and Saturday are selected from the events forum on SS. Not bothered with other forums, I prefer steak to a burger. Heaven knows how many hours the organisers and article contributors present and past have dedicated to keeping us informed; it is appreciated. Atb Stu

I thought vox pop was a nasty disease you got from getting intimate with the wrong people and the GP then prescribed antibiotics as a cure, that's the BBC for you; then realised that's a pox pop. Suppose some will think the analogy of clap and the BBC is appropriate both being socially undesirable at NS events. I suspect you may get those seeking the camera will be tempted to attend and those who are camera shy will give the venue a wide berth.

At the end of the day, if the music is good, word gets round that everyone had a good night, you have a decent dancefloor (and nice clean toilets) then your club will be successful, and it won't matter if the BBC visit or not. Unfortunately I can't come on Friday as I'll be busy stroking my chin in preparation for Second City Soul on Saturday. Good luck with the launch though.

to answer your question I'm happy to say I was too young by 3 or so years to have had an opinion about Wigan's Ovation low point at that time. But looking back it was truly hideous and indicative of how over ground / commercial Northern Soul was. But I don't get your position - you're suggesting that the WO crass coverage was bad but now encouraging coverage that, going on multiple recent examples might very well offer an inaccurate and embarrassing view...

Maryam I think the problem is that many, like me, are sick and tired of the way some so-called Northern Soul fans have treated the scene over the past few years. There are people who have done TV shows before, danced with Morris Dancers, danced for the vids for crappy pop records, organised dance classes, and organised northern soul kids parties, etc... I hope I'm wrong but I'm guessing you'll have these same people turning up for the cameras again this time, and your night will get tarred with the same brush. The 'fame' brigade have slowly diminished what was once a passionate and dedicated scene which had integrity in the eyes of many. Basically they have taken the piss over the past few years out of everything myself and many have held dear for the last 30+ years. I hope it goes well and your heart is obviously in the right place, but I reckon that most people after the kicking we seem to get every time NS appears on mainstream media are now very wary of anything like this. The BBC will need to create this to have an appeal to a wide audience, to do that they will inevitably focus on spectacle and the novel aspects as that what will offer a narrative that gives people with no or little interest in Northern a reason to watch. Therefore it will show outlandishly dressed people dancing strangely. You will also get a narrative that Northern Soul was around in the mid 70s, disappeared but now it's back - and here's some young people to prove it. That quite frankly happens every time and is an insult to the DJs, Record Dealers, punters and characters that kept this scene going post Wigan. I could be wrong, everything from Paul OGrady, Shredded Wheat, Trevor Nelson to that recent BBC doc makes me fear the worse. I really do think you're heart is in the right place Maryam, the BBC's won't be.

They might struggle Maryam with the old fellas who watched the scene evolve as that's the rare breed who carried on once the casino closed - but in my experience the people most likely to step away gracefully from the camera leaving it to those who did a couple of years peak time to tell us all about it. much rather see the better looking, more clued up younger ones then them ;) ;)
