Del Marino Cupid's Arrow C/w I'll Never Be The Same New York stands-alone as the haven for 60’s Beat Ballads. The city seems to offer and endless supply of those emotive Big City Productions. This style of Soul has always held a special place in the hearts of British Rare Soul fans - ever since Jimmy Radcliffe ended the nights at The Twisted Wheel. Before you today is yet another fine example of the much-loved genre of BEAT BALLAD HEAVEN; a 1961 Carl Spencer composition boomed out by the under-recorded balladeer Del Marino. A strong string intro, is bolstered by heavenly girl chorus as Del’s creamy vocal struts into the arrangement, impressing with an effortless smooth-as-silk performance. Rarity is extreme, as the East Coast “Island” scene, Belgium’s “Popcorn” scene and of course the growing army of Beat-Ballad-Heads on the Northern Soul scene are all chasing this truly fabulous tune. Avco, Roadshow & Wand went and plucked these guys from obscurity to try and catch some of the Delfonics, Stylistics success. After this one single Valdons, updated their name to “The Philadelphia Story” a harmony vocal-group of renown. This before you today is their very first cut the vinyl and what a cut it is two. Topside is a soaring St. Paul-Minneapolis, Minnesota vocal-group harmony Northern Soul dancer - that leeches rarity on every note; A pure D.I.Y. street-level bongo driven project, elevated by horns and the massively persuasive falsetto lead vocal.
