Does anyone else have recollections of this night? Can't remember if it was on Wednesday or Thursday nights, and if i remember it was Steve Powell who was instrumental in arranging it, but i'm not 100% sure. What i have got is a playlist(to follow), Chris Plant was a regular too, so that stands it in good steade musically, as well as Dave Shaw, Rover and Carl Jones doing bits now and then. All the regular West Mids crew were in attendance as well as Marc Gaz and Brad from Rugeley/Cannock to name but a few. So many of those early modern classics have been attributed here and there to various d.j.'s, it was such a great time, with so many wonderous tunes to play, thanks to a sudden realisation that the scene had missed out on a wealth of soul, as it became more beat driven than soul led. It was exciting just to be an early "bit player" with every week sending us home with new faves to find, not to mention the current releases. I know the first time i heard the Love Comittee "Just call me name" (aka Will Collins etc..) Sam played it, if he was first i dont know, but i know he was responsible for me hearing that tune , one of those pivotal moments in my soul appreciation history Thanks Martin

No probs. with that at all Mike. As i have emphasised on here, far far to many times to wish to remember, it's all about personal taste and opinion, with personal being the key word. The forum gives us all a chance to air our opinions, ands that's fantastic, however to try to enforce your opinions onto others, or indeed to question the taste of, and at times the very character, of those who's opinions differ is just not on. I've spent the last 35+ years on the scene enjoying myself immensley, going about my business, keeping out of the politics(or as i prefer to call it childish bollocks), and loving the music, i would suggest that approach to everyone, but then would i myself come into the catergory of trying to enforce my personal views onto others? So i'll just say, life's too short, and the music far FAR! too good to marr it with petty bickering, ENJOY!! PH

A great record in its time, and i'm sure if it had been on a lesser label(in terms of commerciality) it would have remained a classic monster oldie. Sadly it got hammered, but you then have to question why?? and i think as was the case with the likes of "Landslide" and "Out on the floor", but not nesceserrily(spellings shite and without my glasses can't see print in the dictionary sorry) "The snake", it was because they were so good, and instant. Was pm'img Neil(Allen) earlier today, there are so mant tales to be told, from those special nights, well it was weekends most times with the likes of the oldies, clifton hall, the britt, the bear, bedford etc...etc...on fridays, then off to Kev 'n; Shazz's or Lornas, if we could get a lift. What a joy to be in the company of the craziest, reckless bunch of wonderful people you could ever wish to meet. talk about living to the maxx, and then more piled in on top, yet through all that we came out with so many life long mates, and great memories. If you told the tales to an outsider, they would scoff and say nobody would get up to those things, but we did weekly Dave from Anglesey stopped me a few months ago, must have been 20 plus years but it was as if it had been 8am the Sunday before, and that applies to so many of us,,,thats so special for me as around here no fucker will speak to me, only jokin really the kids spoke only last year LOL We dont need to meet in a mall, to be together "the memories still remain in our hearts"

Ah! yes i used to Dj at the dayers along with Pep for Tony Reynolds This was where i first met "Our Ted", he looked like a larger brother of Timmy Mallet at the time, red specks hawaiian shirt 'n' all, with all those UK White Demos and the start of what has become the awsome U.S. collection he has accumulated. Who said the only thing good to come out of Brummigem was the Hagley Road. Good times i remember, i remember playin Bill Harris there as a revitalised gem , along with the likes of Celeste Hardie, Ty Karim(that especially interested Ted, next time i saw him he had one, also on Romark) Dean Courtney etc....etc... Did anyone else , other than myself and Micky Cruise hear Alexis Corner play a new release on his Sunday evening show in 1980 by the Lamont Cranston Band, "Taking a chance".....this was at the time the Williams and Watson c/u as "Nobody ever said it was gonna be easy" and massive at Wigan and the Clifton Hall. Nearly fell of me chair, ran downstairs at me Mom n Dads to ring Planty and Mick Holdsworth. It came up in conversation with Mick'y at mine after a nighter, i had never met anyone else who had heard it, the conversation then got wierder as we recounted being at various nights over the years and having these meets without realising 'til later who was who! but we best not go there. Anyway to cap it off, i can't tell you why or how i heard Alexis play it, never listened to the radio in those days , and certainly not a blues based show...wierd eh!!

One of my special memories was listening to Sam's final spot, after the petition, it still rankles me to this day, as the worst injustice i've seen (Geoff Christine 'n' Atlas seemed to be quite involved...all dear mates may i add, but i think they were wrong). Martin (Sam) just opened the box and let the records say it all....the best spot i've heard to this day, sat, when not dancing with Harg'y and it just blew us away. Yet 27 years on Sam remains right at the forefront of the scene still breaking new tunes..........a gentleman and a scholar. Harpo

Yes Mark there will be no escape now iv'e got your add'y. Wonderful times we've had over the years...and even if its a few years between our meets, its always a pleasure and anyone not knowing would assume it was only days. Yes i did lose the will to go on Satyrdays for a couple of years, to much 60's beat driven non soul stuff played, sorry i dont want to hear Helen Shapiro, amongst others, had to watch em on tv or on radio at my nans when they had their POP careers. I enjoyed Yate, also P'boro, KGB, Cleethorpes and even Redditch to mention a few, but i neverb missed an oldies duting that time, and then early '79 that rennaisance occured and that was it did 'em all to the end(sat's) It was not a case of us all realising at a later time just how spoiled we had been, it was so awesome it could not be ignored. The fire that had been lit at local events by the likes of Pep Max and Neil R, just went ballistic on my first visit to t' Casino, that now almost 34 years later it still empowers my soulful quest. To all of those either mentioned in here, or indeed those not thanks for making it so special What did that last night flyer finish with ?
