Before the internet was common place and before there was any words such as "Born again Soulies", way before every one was a CD cover expert, way, way before it was trendy and safe, there were real hard corps soul fans who did travel and work hard to promote and keep the faith. Every time I went to a Soul Weekender back in the lean years there was always a strong presence from Ireland and Germany The Australian Soul Scene has been well and truly established for many years now and certainly before the Wigan Casino Reenactment Society began! I bet most reading this didn't even get out of the house during the nineties? Like I said in my opening sentence, ignorance can be bliss, I was often annoyed at the lack of dance floor etiquette on the German scene, that was until I cam back to England to see beer being spilled on the dance floors by Trev's n Shazzer's. I used to think that the dance floor in the UK was hallowed ground until I saw a lady sling a complete tub of talk onto the floor and then remained seated for the rest of the night. My attitude has changed and I am less ignorant now, Overseas Ns Scenes serious or just dicking about? I think most of the UK scene is "Just dicking about" P.S I'd love to do an Ireland Nighter and I miss the German Scene like mad.

Help with a track In the early nineties at Drummonds I heard a track that has haunted me and frustrated me at the same time because I can not remember the artist? I think it was called "Touch me", it was at the time when house was taking off and it may be on the Black Moon label? You can dance to two sticks being struck together; many aboriginal tribes do but is this dance music? In the context that you are citing I don't think it is. You can dance to noise but noise isn't music. Music is "an artistic form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a structured and continuous manner", well that's the definition but some will stretch this. If you are a very small record dealer then this advice isn't going to help much. I think that if you are in the business of sending items by post then you have to factor losses via this means into your yearly accounts. You shouldn't have to but there is nothing worse than an ugly truth killing a beautiful lie and the reality of sending items via the mail is not 100%, 100% of the time. Balancing the cost of mailing to the profit margin must be a nightmare, it's a shame there is no help for the small business man who is just trying to make an honest living.

I think Royal Mail counters and The Post Office have been in disarray for many years now promising and charging for services they can not every give. Unfortunately they have a monopoly on most things or at least alternatives are not cost effective. They work on the basis of bulk to keep the prices down but they have far too many knob heads who can mess you around during the frustrating and many stages. Too many disgruntled employees with too much power over your complaints. John I just think you are going to have to grin and bear it. This is how the system should work, you pay for your international signed for item and hand it over, the counter clerk should confirm you have addressed it both address and sender. You should then be able to track it via their web site https://track.royalmail.com/portal/rm/track?catId=22700601&gear=authentication But as soon as it leaves blighty it is no longer their responsibility and international mail protocols kick in. If it goes tits up you then enquire and a P58 form is completed, a copy of this is sent to all of the offices that handle the item and a search is made for the item of any packaging. The addressee then has to sign a certificate of none delivery and this then is sent to the office of posting. The UK PIB (Postal inquiry branch) looks to see if there has been any tampering and then the form will end up at the claims department where compensation should be then given to you. It can take up to 6 to 10 weeks to allow for customs seizures and appropriate enquires. What they will never tell you is that the first thing they assume is that it has been delivered and the addressee is telling pork pies, this happens all too often that's why no one gets too worried when a customer complains. The next thing to assume is the address is wrong, happens 50% of the time and causes delay. Then there is the packaging, it only takes two or three broken packages to happen and the items can not be married up to their true packaging, hence the time. Hope this helps?

The first time I deployed to Bosnia we where very aware of the camera presence and we all saw a film clip of a soldier who was caught in the glare of an ITN news camera, he went on to embarrass the whole of the British forces by saying that every thing was shit, it wasn't and he was just being a knob. Thankfully the news crew realized this and never aired the piece, it is now used as an example of how easy it can be to shoot your self in the foot. An opinion is one thing but an excuse to vent your spleen is another. The British Forces Broadcasting Services came and filmed me for a complete day interviewing me about The Armed Forces Scooter Club for a program about servicemen serving in Germany and their hobbies. I was very cautious about them just doing the Mods n Rockers thing and I spoke at great lengths to concentrate on the enthusiast's side rather than the silly Mods n Parkas thing. It came on after the news and after edits the whole program became an embarrassment, I would never do it again.

I think we can and I think now days is the first time we do this as a scene, prior to this was a reactive ear after the dance floor had approved or disapproved it? For example, Drisabone played cold for the first time on ear phones doesn't quite have the impact as hearing it with a few hundred people going mad for it at a nighter and can we now hear the out played oldies and appreciate them as musical works without their former divvy label or without the Casino clutter? I have just heard Seventh Wonder Captain Of My Ship cold and it is a very underrated track, my opinion of course but can we now listen without the baggage and if so what holds up and what surprises you now days. There are loads of records that deserve a clean slate and some that should be turned into ash trays.
