Young Birds Fly
Uplandmod behave yer sen and come clean, this whole thing stinks! Is this just a Youtube special? I can't belief that you have used so many Northernsoul tracks without first getting permission or funding to pay for them! For your next film may I suggest you use some of the Trojan back catalogue, don't ask permission and see how The Yardies take it. Then get a load of shaven headed tough guys to pose and pull faces whilst some sexy Japanese bird spins around in her kitchen watched by some big nosed slapper with her mums cloths on. I'll write the script for you.

Soulfull Management
I was on a six month tour in Banja Luka in Bosnia, we where in an old metal factory and I had a collection of CD's with me. Each time and I do mean every time, my lads returned from patrol I would play Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP. Most of them would groan and moan but there was one who lad, "Rosy", who would sing along, believe me every one new the words after six weeks of it! I had to travel to Sarajevo one day and told Rosy that he was coming with me, he got to have all the normal perks such as stopping at a roadside bar for a sneaky cold pivo beer, doesn't sound much of a perk but we where dry for six months with severe penalties if we where caught drinking, I was allowed to drink when liaising with the locals as be it their custom. I keep in touch with Rosy and he always reminds me of the time I let him have a beer on the road to Sarajevo, he says it was the sweetest taste he had ever had, I just say "My Baby's Got ESP".

Can You Name The Venue?
Can you name the venue? I met a lady at Barnsley last Friday who asked if I had attended a certain Allnighter, I hadn't and asked her "Why should I go", this was her reply............... 1: It's always good to try somewhere new. 2: It's much better to travel loads of miles when there is something on close by... 3: It's very easy to get to and find. 4: We like "BLANK" virgins and we are getting less and less of them. 5: It's a lovely venue, all on one level, so no tiresome stairs where you might miss a record. 6: There is a gorgeous burger van, so you can buy a hot coffee... 7: We try and think out the DJs in each room, so that if one rooms music is not your thing, then the other might do it for you. 8: We like to party and don't give a fook about bollotics. 9: We're all crap dancers, so everyone who visits looks good. 10: It's very dark in the main room, I find I always look sooooo much better in the dark. Can you name the venue?? Cant but not go now can I

The Beginners Guide To Progressive Northern
Billb Not sure if you have done your argument any favors here mate? The first of the Northernsoul CD's reeked of a rushed attempt to compile for the sake of compiling and yes I am aware of the paint rapidly drying behind me as I enter the corner, I still think that there where none of the more rare tracks that have found themselves in the hearts and minds of the Northernsoul scene. Yup there where a few but I still maintain that they did nothing to endear the scene nor did they fill any gaps, I bet a pound to a pinch of shat that given the opportunity the track listings would look some what different in hind sight? Big calls by me yes I know and impossible to prove, I don't want to turn this into an anti early CD thread I want to try to convince the Northernsoul fraternity that it's safe to go back into the water as far as Nighters are concerned. It matters not why people don't or stopped going to the allnighters, the point I am trying to make is that there is a real change in the way the Allnighter experience is delivered. Take Middleton for example, this arguably is at the zenith of the scene and yet it does not suffer from any clique, or musical snobbery that has turned to silliness. Long gone are the seedy Smokey dens that did little to endear them selves to the casual or nervous visitor. We get an open, clear and friendly fresh approach, maybe it's an age thing maybe it's that most of the old naughty boys are now middle aged pie eaters like me?

Pete I didn't really take "aim" I just want to portray what's happening at the moment up and down the M62 corridor. As a fair few of you know I have not been a stranger to allnighters and I am not a born again, nowt wrong with that I hasten to add. I just think that it will be a crying shame people aren't getting to the nighters for preconceived reasons based on past disappointments, like I said there is a real skip in the step of allnighters at the moment. For some time now most nighters where either serving up tired oldies or tracks from Northernsoul floor clearers volume 4. We now seam to have it right, better, more palatable yet without loosing the plot or loosing our roots. We have always had nighters that are a bit naff, we still have, but we also have nighters that are magic. I want people to know there is a good wind of change to attitudes, music policy and in general a better nighter experience. ">

Simon I will be at Barnsley on Friday, why? Well Barnsley is a great example of what is happening at the moment, excitement and fun! The age range at Barnsley is from 18 to lord knows how old and from the beard strokers to the fist time visitor, Barnsley is a good snap shot of every thing that's good about our scene. The Allnighter scene is possibly more vibrant now than it has ever been with a positive out look towards music and a sense of pride and responsibility amongst the DJ's. I like to think that the days of playing to a fellow train spotter is over, no one who is any one, is playing safe and yet the danceable quality seams to be in a joyful abundance. We have some mega venues to choose from now; Middleton has set the pace there is some thing happening at the moment on the Allnighter Scene. Reg "I pity the fool" Rocky Hard work? Digging a ditch or eating one of our lasses meat pies is hard work, staying up is the new early night Reg! Try it dude, I promise it won't kill ya and the warm fluffy feeling of being bolloxed with a smile on yer grid takes some beating I promise. The booze thing? You can still have a drink but to be honest no one wants do see Uncle Knobhead stumbling about whilst trying to remember the words to The Snake.

The Beginners Guide To Progressive Northern
Ever given much thought to doing an Allnighter? Yes we have all done them in the past but there seams a reluctance for one reason or another. Why would you want to go to an Allnighter in the first place? The answer to this will always be open for debate but I am convinced that the best music will be only every heard on the nighters. I think that for many, Northernsoul has now become nothing more than a nostalgia trip and it is here where a leap of faith is needed. It must be appreciated that before all of the safe plays where known and loved they where all unknowns broken at the Nighters and if this analogy stands it there fore shows that at one time we where all swamped with unknowns? So why does the idea of a night listening to unknown or unfamiliar tracks sound so abhorrent to most? Where did it go wrong? I theorize that it is the fault of the CD. I look at my own CD collection, based on when Northernsoul first was put onto this format, there are a plethora of fillers and bottom of the barrel sounds that although new they did not capture very many peoples imaginations indeed I blame this period of our Northernsoul history for diluting the quality stream. Newies or progressive sounds had an image problem. I truly believe that we now have a renaissance of quality soul; we have some excellent venues now with superb tracks being discovered, dusted off or borrowed from other genres that make for an exiting time, kinda reminds me of being a young man every week being blown away by the music that became part of my DNA! Now if you buy into any of this you may want to start thinking about attending a nighter? Firstly we need to appreciate that some Nighters will replicate what the average soul night is doing and vice versa, but you should now hopefully be on a quest to sample the music and vibe first hand so you will have to choose your nighter carefully. More on this later. "I couldn't last an Allnighter, I'd fall asleep", not much I can say on this except yes you can and stop being a wimp! Life is not a dress rehearsal, this is it! We are all pretty much into the autumn of our lives and I FOR ONE AM NOT GOING QUIETLY! The best thing to do is plan you're few days leading up to a nighter with decent nights kip and a positive mental attitude, the mind is stronger than any body. Get some decent food down your neck and bulk up a bit; you can always burn it off on the dance floor. Plan your journey and car and drive share, if you are traveling more than a couple of hours make sure you can grab a bit of food, chocolate rocks, and coffee! Make sure you have a change of dry warm clothing for the journey home. Drink plenty of water and avoid the booze! Here are a few tips so that you can enjoy the evening. Remember that the tune you are dancing or listening to for the first time is probably the first time for most people as well so don't be afraid of anything new. Get on the dance floor, it matters not whether you have two left feet no one stares or cares! Talk to people, you will be surprised how easy it is to make friends and if you get saddled with a bore like me then just get up for a dance and don't come back, easy. If you like a track, ask what it is then get back onto Soul Source and ask for a file, chances are there will be some one who has it. It's a fantastic time for Northernsoul; make an effort this year to do some thing different, you won't be disappointed.

Kirsty I remember you, I thought you where top totty and I think I had seen you a few times before at The 100 Club? Or possibly Bretbey? Can you remember drew? She had very short blond hair and I have not seen her since this video? I also remember Shaun (mega sidies) , not shown in the clip, he is an old pal of mine and he was a 100 Club regular, he may well still be? On the Saturday, the weekend Maxine Brown was on, I was stood out side our chalet (sharing with me, Scotty, Chris and Cheryl Donnahughe RIP), this massive convertible Cadillac pulled up with a chap asking if there was any accommodation left. I said he could get a shower in our pad a kip down if he wanted, he threw me the keys to his car and asked if I wanted to take it for a spin, Scotty and I was off our fookin faces and I drove around the sea front like the Fonz! Mega!!

The real star of the TV show was the casino Brick, mega! I recognize a few faces on the vid, my old bessy Mick Scott from Doncaster and Stu from Manchester. Can any body spot any one else? I can't remember what year this was? I left for a tour in Germany the week after so it was possibly 1996?

For the last few days now my mobile phone has been goin mental chicken oriental with Middleton coming up this Saturday. The fact that it's relocating in the leisure centre opposite the old venue talk has been of swimming after the Allnighter. Now me old pal Steve Lehair tells me of how there was a fair few who used to visit the swimming baths after the Casino, is this true? How many went and are there any of the Soulful Swimmers on list? It's not known as yet if we can all swim after Middleton, I know that The South Yorkshire Massive are taking their trunks n Mankinis and it is our intention of starting a Northernsoul Synchronized Swimming Club Our swimming music could be....................... Detroit Executives - Cool Off Ramsey Lewis - Wade in the Water Platters - Washed Ashore

Weekender In Edinburgh Needs Co- Promoters
Northernsoul in Scotland is well entrenched within the scenes history and of recent years I can not think of many allnighters where Scotts aren't present traveling further than most to enjoy Northernsoul. I for one would love a decent event in Scotland so I could repay the support that has been given over the years, I do hope this doesn't sound patronizing, it is not meant to be. My only provisos would be that the music was worth going for and not just a muddle of RnB "B" sides or the usual meat n potato middle of the road soul night CD collection. It must not also clash with Middleton. I know at least four South Yorkshire Soulies who would love to come and support a good Scottish venue, it would me mega!
