MIKE TERRY photo.
Sammy was a lovely old guy; been around in the music business since the Big Band era. Jacqui Kavanagh and I had a few great meals out with Sammy and his son Sammy Junior and Laura Greene. Tragically he died in a house fire at his sisters in Alabama shortly after we last saw him. Another legend sadly gone.

MIKE TERRY photo.
He seemed to be doin ok. The neighbourhood he lived in; Teaneck, was a nice area then as I recall; not a run down or low economy area. I dont think he was livin a life of excess or luxury, but doin ok. I’ll transcribe the tapes i recorded for a fuller picture of Mike and his life.

MIKE TERRY photo.
Heres another photographic treat from my archives; the legend Mike Terry. This photo was taken by me, on 10th of April 1990, at Mikes home in Teaneck, New Jersey. Jacqui Kavanagh and I spent that afternoon with Mike and his wife, talking about his life and times in the music business. I interviewed him at length that day, using a dictaphone and cassette tape, and was the first person to ever interview him about his Northern/Motown years apparently. Everyone had been looking for Mike but in the wrong place....Detroit; he’d long since left there. I found him by mentioning him one day(as a long shot) to a music business legend Sammy Lowe, who used to find music business people for me. It turned out Mike lived around the corner from him! Bizarrely, given all the superb stuff Mike was involved in, he only actually had 1 piece of vinyl to his name; an album by the Atlanta Disco Band. I left that one with him, lol. Oh and the Baritone sax you see here is the one he used at Motown and on all the stuff we know and love. Did I get to hold it??? you bet!, and photographed with it too, lol. I have a postcard from Mike, sent to me shortly after Sammy Lowe gave me his address, and I’d written to him. In it Mike says that he played on 90% of the hits that came out of Motown. Enjoy Tim

Jerri Jackson, Bobby Black, Joe Bataan, Mike and Ray
Hi Gary, I have no way to send u a clip mate coz my system is not linked up to my pc etc. As for my best price mate; I cant improve on £200; its fair and it takes condition into account. Im happy to send it; that way you can decide if its worth £200 to you or not; if not just return it.

Hi Gary, It plays, but there is audible crackle, as described and hence low price. Im happy to send it first in advance of payment if that helps, but it is pretty much as Ive described it. It plays a lot better than it looks; thats for sure. Tim

SAM WARD Photo
Another Detroit photo. This is Sam Ward (Singin Sammy Ward) of ‘Sister Lee’ fame, outside his house. Sammy was a real character; exactly as you see him in this photo; a real cool cat and a funny guy. Every photo Ive got of him is the same; smiling, happy and cool. He was fun to be with. When Jacqui Kavanagh and I got to his house, as we were knockin on his door, he pulled up the drive in some big old Cadillac. He saw us, smiled, then sat there for a good minute whilst proceeding to empty a bumper bag of chips straight down his throat. Jac and I were in stitches laughing; he then got out the car laughing too. I’ve got a great colour photo of him in his lounge putting a copy of ‘Sister Lee’ on his deck; but thats for another time. Enjoy Tim

WHO AM I???? Im GARDENIA ‘DENA’ BARNES!!!!!!
Hi Chris, yeah thats right, and it used to make me smile privately when I’d hear of US guys I knew trying to find ‘Robert Kreiner’s’ in Michigan not realising that it was a famous Detroit/Motown guitarist super easy to find and living in Nashville!😀.

WHO AM I???? Im GARDENIA ‘DENA’ BARNES!!!!!!
Cheers Russ, Thank you. I never put it up digitally coz 20 years on Ive still actually got hard copies of the mag left!! I only did a run of 500 and still have about 100 left. Its easy to get the impression that theres a lot of interest in the background stuff, but my experience is that seemingly there isnt 500 people on the scene who would pay to read it. Unbelievably when i brought out that mag it was less than a fiver and still people wouldnt buy it!! Thats why i never did the follow up mag which was supposed to be the Nabay/Dena Barnes one, but I lost heart after the first one and never bothered. Its a real shame, but I think thats the reality; real deep interest isnt as widespread as we think it is.
