  1. Black Magic was a division of Selecta Disc( Brian Selby) and distributed in the UK at the time by CBS(Sony). John Brattan was label manager and although short lived, they had pretty heft sellers including The Sharonettes(60,000), Dobie Gray(10k plus) and various similar follow ups all achieving healthy numbers. The scene had peaked by around 77 with the label trying different things ie Jill Baby Love and The Funkees. The label folded but the record store flourished in the new emerging indie market and stayed at the forefront, until the untimely death of founder and owner Brian Selby.
  2. Definitely the right spirit.
  3. I think this fella used to advertise an awful lot of sounds in the Blues and Soul ad. Quite a lot had the 'Inst' word at the side of 'em
  4. Per-so-nally......I prefer these fellas......
  5. Steve- Understand the humorous side swipes, but he along with Ian Levine were the sound of 73-75. Those of us who were very active during that period revel in those incredible song finds. Give us older guys a break.......ta
  6. Wonder how many on here have happily sold 'reissues' from the topic of conversation for plentiful sums on Ebay and to new fans.....Just sayin'
  7. And some Northern 'fans' got to know The Dynamites-Ain't No Soul before Major Lance/Ronnie Milsap
  8. Of course, but let's thank him for the finds instead of constantly kicking the dude.
  9. Now why didn't I think of that
  10. True. A few mistakes from the man.......counter balanced by the discovery of Double Cookin, I'll Always Need You, You Didn't Say A Word, I'm Not Strong Enough, You Don't Love Me, Dance Dance Dance, Love Runs Out......... Fair trade off?
  11. Very true Steve though it's hardly hurt the disc's credibility and certainly not the value.
  12. Totally agree Ady, which is why I said to Ian.....tread carefully. Simon is new to social media. The whole criticism thing might scare him to death lol
  13. Dear, dear, dear......still got all that anger!
  14. Nah. Shame......it makes me feel much younger!
  15. Steve- That clearly needs a lot of thought. Very few know him personally so it probably would turn into a witch hunt. On the positive side, once everybody got to know him and his character, methinks he would be well received. One thing's for sure, we are talking about a very knowledgeable individual right up there with the best of them. One snippet of news I can give you is he's still interested in vinyl. He mentioned to Ian that he's looking for a 45 on Bell by Curtis, The Brothers called When Love Goes Wrong on Bell. Anyone have it for sale? Hopefully I can cease playing messenger, but while we try and coax him into the arena I'm happy to offer snippets of interest to members.
  16. 1. Patti and the Emblems was a Golden Torch play from 1972. 2..Johnny Jackson is Midnight Brew by Melvin Carter 3. John Abbey alive and well and living in the U.S. Richard Searling and I interviewed him 2 years ago on our first 70's Soul show on Smooth.
  17. Hard to tell. He's fairly religious and its early days.
  18. I'll make sure he doesn't read the comment Steve. Ha!
  19. This may be a merger from the 'Will the real' thread.....but breaking news on Simon Soussan, the notorious, creative and often misunderstood character from the 70's. He is alive and well. Ian Levine disclosed information to me a short while ago and it's pretty conclusive. I too have exchanged emails with the man. Updates as we get them......
  20. He can certainly sell himself that's for sure. The reality, well that's very different. I was one of the originals on Wednesday night too hosting the night with the late Mike Rollo. It ended after a while due to dwindling numbers. The venue didn't hold 5,000 so the Saturday statement and Friday All Nighters is pure fiction.
  21. I see the likeness, but as Tim was about 12 at the time, the BofMan one was Russ. Ha!
  22. I wish it was! The main male with customary moustache handed me a weekly fee every Saturday lol
  23. Whenever he paid me at the Casino, I could swear it was the lead singer of Brotherhood of Man
  24. 8 years. 416 weeks at an average of 2,000 per week = 832,000. And that's being generous! You do the math!
