It is a great, great track. Just have to save up for one that doesn't sound like the singer was eating a bag of crisps when the song was being recorded! I have to say that It's good that the seller is honest enough to let potential buyers hear it in the state it's in.

Indeed! Don't think my record player would ever forgive me if I subjected it to that...

$137 at time of writing! Listen to the soundfile - ouch. Now how much is this worth excellent or mint? https://cgi.ebay.com/R-B-NORTHERN-SOUL-TINY...1QQcmdZViewItem
  4. Ignore it if it's a text message. If they are serious, they'll send a letter...

Found loads of UK Sue, Stax, Motown and other stuff in the early 80s when I was on the 'Rock n Roll' and had the time for hours of sifting through great piles of grubby 45s. I remember when 'Coming home Baby' by Mel Torme was being touted as this big mystery sound in the mod scene and I had to laugh as I had three of them, one of which I gave to a mate for nothing as I regarded it as quite a common record - what a show-off... Also quite a few LPs - Irma Thomas Take a Look, Impressions Keep on Pushing and so on. Also found a lot of stuff that i re-sold at a local 'alternative' record shop like Captain Beefheart demos, Rolling Stones and Who 45s especially. They sold the records no problem for what seemed to me like absurdly over-inflated prices (usually £10 in 1983 prices although the Beefheart went for £25) and kept 10% for themsleves. I always smile or wince when I think of the poor bugger who bought the copy of the Stones' 'Satisfaction' that had "I love Keith" written with ballpen into the actual grooves of the record...how do you grade something like that!

Ah, I should have read the thread first i guess. Lot of variations on that record - a minefield for the uninformed!

Isn't that the re-issue? Small song title font and 'Recording first published 1965' in top right are the giveaways or is my memory playing me wrong?

Too right. Remember getting a copy of 'Sock it to 'em JB' on red Atlantic which both sounded abysmal AND wowed about the deck like a hula-hoop champion after eight pints. Unlistenable. It ended up as a flowerpot for my mum!
  9. Thanks. I note that on the YouTube dubbed version, the song is almost exactly the right length for the credit sequence, suggesting they had a pre-set recording time to adhere to as well.

I found it quite odd when I started collecting soul in earnest in the mid 80s that a lot of dealers at non-soul record fairs seemed to value the UK releases lower then their american counterparts. Guess they thought the US records had more rarity or were more in demand. Who knows? Net result was that I ended up with all sorts of stuff at excellent prices. One heavy metal type-bloke sold me the Marvelletes - I'll Keep Holding On On, Brenda Holloway - When I'm Gone, Jackie Edwards - I Feel So Bad, Solomon Burke - Everybody Needs Somebody Atlantic demo and a red/white demo of The Impressions - Woman's Got Soul for £20! Talk about being gobsmacked... Used to find a lot of Sue stuff at the local charity shops then too. Mostly fairly worn out but such a pretty label to look at going round and round...
  11. It certainly is. Must have been a great experience hearing that for the first time. Wonder if she has ever sung it live?
  12. Thanks for that. Here's what started all the bickering off. Actually suits the credits pretty well!
  13. Was the awesome 'You Only Live Twice' by Lorraine Chandler actually put forward for consideration as the theme to the Bond film? I'm trying to get one up on a James Bond soundtrack bore at work who insists said track never had anything to do with the film - he's just jealous 'cos I've got it on vinyl and he ain't! Pathetic isn't it...

I'm not buying - personally I'm not a fan of You've Been Away - especially now reminds me of cat food. But I've got some poor sod trying to sell me a bunch of Northern who has been getting terribly excited at the prices being paid on Ebay and I've been making his day by saying 'that's a boot', 're-issue, I'm afraid', and now the latest bad news for him. The truth hurts, i'm afraid

Ah ha! Thanks for the info. Well in that case, I've got some bad news for someone...

Has 'You've Been Away' by Rubin ever been bootlegged and, if so, what are the things to look for?

Thanks for the offer but Nashee has come through with a copy.
  18. Back in the early 80s, big laughs were to be had attempting and watching others try to do the Mod dances described in Richard Barne's book like the block or the ska. Finally we got to see original mods doing their stuff on Ready Steady Go repeats a little bit later! God, some of the moves looked really corny, but i guess if you've had enough purple hearts...

Thanks for the contact. Should find out this weekend if he's got it!

Yes, same song. I used to have a copy of the Chris Farlowe single, but i've always been looking out for the original. Seems like quite an elusive track or maybe i'm just unlucky.

Am looking for a copy of an early 60s 45 called 'Air Travel' by (i think) Bob and Ray. Anyone got one? And if not does anyone know what label it's on?

The 60s mods link is pretty obvious to anyone familiar with the history of the scene... and it's always been my opinion that the mod revival did a great deal to keep Northern alive and kicking through a lot of the 80s and even influenced a lot of the more R'n'B-style or slower sounds that were popular at Stafford and other nights. This, as i've discovered, is an opinion that produces mixed opinions to say the least! Major reason that i think that i'm at least partly right is, from my perspective as a one-time Edinburgh Mod, for a long time the only events that seemed to be held in Scotland (and almost entirely in East coast Scotland for some reason...) were often organised by people with some link to the mod scene and which attracted masses of like-minded young punters, a lot of whom are still in the scene to some extent today. Ditto Stafford and the newies scene. Could not believe that a nighter would get away with playing slowies and R'n'B-style music - very avant garde! - but again as a mod i found it naturally very acceptable. I mean Arthur Alexander, Stewart Ames, Roy Roberts, Tommy Navarro, Exits and masses more - fantastic sounds! Mind you, there were always loads of mod revivalists who did and do hate soul. So why be a bloody mod in the first place then for pete's sake?
  23. I noticed Bob Carolgees from Tiswas was also selling his socks on Ebay a while back. Second-hand socks? Mmmmm

Have personally gone from total 'MUST be an original 45' 60s-soul fascist in my youth to 'who cares as long as the sounds are all right' knackered old geezer. Still have two minor problems with DJs using Cds or Ipoddery though: 1. I remain scornful of DJs lapping up praise for playing tunes that they've got from a download or off some CD they paid £5 for in HMV or wherever. People who've gone to the time, trouble and money of tracking down and playing a rare 45 deserve respect! 2. And...paying (often quite a lot of) entry money to a night that features an excess of Cds and/or poddin' kinda rankles But on the whole the sound is still what counts!

Stardust 45 has an inferior sound quality (at least the copy i heard did...) to the LP. Looks cheap, sounds cheap and it is cheap.
