Secret History of Chicago Music - Jo Ann Garrett

The Chicago Readers 'Secret History of Chicago Music' series of articles by Steve Krakow hits the spot yet again, this time it's taking a look at Jo Ann Garrett.
Local soul sensation Jo Ann Garrett disappeared from the biz in her 20s
This flexible, distinctive singer worked with the likes of Pervis Spann, Andre Williams, and Charles Stepney—but her career lasted only a few years.
by Steve Krakow
December 16, 2022
... urged Garrett to audition for WVON DJ and club owner Pervis Spann. Garrett passed the audition, which got her a spot at a talent show at the Regal Theater. She took second place, behind the Five Stairsteps (later of “O-o-h Child” fame), and both artists ended up with record contracts. Garrett was still just 16 or 17 years old, but already her music career was being managed by Spann and Robert “Bob” Lee, who owned a small local label called Hawk Records and worked in A&R for the short-lived but more successful Crash...

Book: Soul Serenade King Curtis and His Immortal Saxophone

Recently published, this 352 page hardback book takes a detailed look at 'King Curtis’s meteoric rise from a humble Texas farm to the recording studios of Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and New York City as well as to some of the world’s greatest music stages, including the Apollo Theatre, Fillmore West, and Montreux Jazz Festival.'
A lengthy Kindle preview follows below the notes
Release Notes
Although in 2000 he became the first sideman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, “King Curtis” Ousley never lived to accept his award. Tragically, he was murdered outside his New York City home in 1971. At that moment, thirty-seven-year-old King Curtis was widely regarded as the greatest R & B saxophone player of all time. He also may have been the most prolific, having recorded with well over two hundred artists during an eighteen-year span.
Soul Serenade is the definitive biography of one of the most influential musicians of the 50s, 60s, and early 70s. Timothy R. Hoover chronicles King Curtis’s meteoric rise from a humble Texas farm to the recording studios of Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and New York City as well as to some of the world’s greatest music stages, including the Apollo Theatre, Fillmore West, and Montreux Jazz Festival. Curtis’s “chicken-scratch” solos on the Coasters’ Yakety Yak changed the role of the saxophone in rock & roll forever. His band opened for the Beatles at their famous Shea Stadium concert in 1965. He also backed his “little sister” and close friend Aretha Franklin on nearly all of her tours and Atlantic Records productions from 1967 until his death.
Soul Serenade is the result of more than twenty years of interviews and research. It is the most comprehensive exploration of Curtis’s complex personality: his contagious sense of humor and endearing southern elegance as well as his love for gambling and his sometimes aggressive temperament. Hoover explores Curtis’s vibrant relationships and music-making with the likes of Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, Isaac Hayes, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Sam Moore, Donny Hathaway, and Duane Allman, among many others.
Author Notes
Timothy R Hoover is an avid music lover who has spent more than twenty years researching and writing about the life of King Curtis. A freelance writer for Hittin’ the Note magazine, he lives outside Wheatland, Wyoming, with his wife.

Mica Millar has announced her National Tour for 2023!

Releasing her debut album 'Heaven Knows' to critical review earlier this year, Mica Millar has quickly become the UK’s brightest new Soul star, picking up Jazz FM's prestigious 'Soul Act of The Year 2022' award alongside a nomination for 'Breakthrough Act of The Year' and featuring on the front covers of iconic magazines like Blues & Soul and Echoes, amidst an array of five star album and live reviews, plus champions at national radio including the likes of BBC Radio 2’s Trevor Nelson and 6 Music’s Craig Charles.
Following two monumental album launch shows in September including a sold out show at the capital’s prestigious Jazz Café and a special hometown performance filling out the iconic Albert Hall, Manchester, Mica has announced her first UK tour for May 2023. She’ll be returning with her hotly-tipped seven-piece band to Jazz Cafe London on 5th May with shows at Liverpool's Epstein Theatre on 21st May, Manchester’s Band On The Wall on 25th May and The Wardrobe Leeds on 30th May presented by Manchester and Leeds Jazz Festivals with additional UK and European dates still to be announced.
Self-written, arranged and produced, Mica’s debut album ‘Heaven Knows’ explores themes of human nature, spirituality, love, oppression, inequality and empowerment, drawing inspiration from a plethora of vintage soundscapes, most notably, soul, blues, gospel and jazz.
Since its release in June 2022, ‘Heaven Knows’ has achieved widespread acclaim, picking up five star reviews from the likes of Daily Express and Daily Mirror who called it "a classy debut" and rave reviews everywhere from Wordplay, Music Week, Fred Perry, 1883 Magazine, The Official Charts, God is in the TV, Backseat Mafia, Soul Jazz and Funk, Soul Tracks, Noctis Magazine, Louder Than War and many more. Mica also landed front cover features at Blues & Soul Magazine who credited her as “a star with intense emotional sincerity” and Echoes Magazine who championed ‘Heaven Knows’ as their ‘soul album of the month’ and one of 'The Best Soul albums of 2022’.
Mastered at the iconic Abbey Road Studios in late 2021 by Geoff Peshe who cited 'Heaven Knows' as "his favourite Abbey Road album project" of the year, and mixed by Brian Malouf (best knows for engineering Michael Jackson's Bad Album), other album credits including organist Rickey Peterson and producer David Z (both long term collaborators of Prince), guitarist Miles James (Michael Kiwanuka, Cleo Sol, Tom Misch) and bassist Jerry Barnes (Whitney Huston).
Mica’s distinct vision is one that’s earned her renowned credibility within the industry and it’s her creativity, drive and attention to detail that has made ‘Heaven Knows’ the album it is - a timeless collection of modern soul showcasing a confident new artist, quickly establishing herself as a new and unique voice in British Soul music.

Sharon McMahan - Got To Find Another Guy - Big Man Records 45 - Out Now BMR 1011

After problems at the pressing plant, the latest Big Man Records release is now available, audio along with the 45 sleeve notes and more follow below...
Sleeve Notes
Sharon began her career, as a teen in Detroit, Michigan. She wrote her first songs at 12 years old. After auditioning her, Ollie Mclaughlin launched her writing career by publishing/producing, recording and releasing, several of her songs on his own record labels, KAREN, CARLA, MOIRA & RUTH RECORDS. McLaughlin recorded Sharon's songs on Barbara Lewis, Deon Jackson, Gracie Darnell, Johnnie Mae Matthews. He also secured a UK recording for Sharon's song, titled, "Someday We're Gonna Love Again" on the Liverpool based group, The Searchers. It charted to #11 in Billboard in several countries and to #23 here In the U.S. Thus, Sharon has a tremendous fan base In the UK. Later, another Detroit based publisher/producer became familiar with Sharon's writing skills. He was Don Davis, producer of Johnnie Taylor, executive producer of The Dramatics and many more artists. He recorded Sharon's songs on current Hall Of Fame artists, Etta James and Mavis Staples. He also recorded one of Sharon's songs on The Three Degrees. Please Note: Rappers, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth sampled the track from The Three Degrees song, to record the title track for their CD titled: RETURN OF THE MECCA.
In 1973, Sharon was signed to Columbia Records, by then president Clive Davis. Her released single was titled, "Get Out Of My Life", produced by Toxey French and arranged by Philly master arranger, Bobby Martin.  Sharon later associated with NEA jazz award recipient, Benny Golson. Golsons album, "I'm Always Dancin' To the Music", contains a Sharon McMahan song, "Love Is The Key". Sharon later worked with Golson as lyricists on the NBC mini-series, "The Sophisticated Gents". Unfortunately, for Sharon, her screen credits were not published, as agreed but her lyrics speaks volumes in this film.
Soon after, Sharon was introduced to Otis Blackwell, writer for Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and others. He recorded and released a McMahan country song, titled "I'm Happy Just The Way I Am" on his own Bullion label.
Thanks to Richard Johnstone for his contribution to this release, Ian Gregory at 'Soul Time Soul Flyers' for label and sleeve artwork, Karen Bentham for her support and label administration.

You just can’t imagine how many Joe Johnsons soul singers were around on both coasts of the States at the crossing of the sixties and the seventies. And how long it took us to find the right one.
Double banger here out of a privately produced Long Player that never had a 7” vinyl to lead to its publication. Until now of course, with that Time Capsule feel as trademark of our flagship record label.
Huge thanks to John Browne & Ian Williams for their assistance too!

When Tina and Motown Came To Britain

Two BBC Documentaries over Christmas and New Year.
When Tina Turner came to the UK on Christmas Day and then on New Years Day wehn Motown came to the UK.
BBC Two has revealed two documentaries on legendary singer Tina Turner and how Motown came to the UK in time for Christmas.
When Tina Turner Came To Britain will feature previously unheard interviews with the icon and will tell the story of her relationship with the UK when it airs on Christmas Day.
Speaking about the upcoming documentary, Turner said: “The love, energy and support I’ve had from Britain over the years has been amazing. I couldn’t have enjoyed the career I’ve had without my time spent in the UK and collaborations with amazing British songwriters, musicians and producers. From my very first visit to London in 1966, I always enjoyed visiting Britain and performing for fans across the country – it felt like my second home.”
The documentary will also feature contributions from those who have worked with Tina over the years, including Heaven 17’s Gregory and Martyn Ware, Skunk Anansie’s Skin and former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips, who choreographed the music video to Private Dancer.
It will begin with Turner's first visit to the UK when she supported Rolling Stones on tour in 1966. The film will span more than five decades, with footage of her attending the world premiere of Tina: The Musical in London in 2018.
In the second documentary airing on New Year’s day, BBC2 will tell the story of when Motown came to the UK in the form of a tour in 1965. The likes of Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles arrived in the country and performed across the nation.
When Motown Came to Britain will also include commentary from a range of artists in Motown fans, including Otis Williams and The Supremes and the temptations manager Shelley Berger, plus many more.
Jonathan Rothery, BBC head of Pop Music TV, said: “Both films take a fascinating look at much-loved stars through the filter of the times they’ve visited our shores.”
When Motown Came to the UK airs on New Year’s Day on BBC Two and iPlayer.
When Tina Turner Came to Britain airs on Christmas Day on BBC Two and iPlayer.

New CD - For Dancers Forty - Kent Cd Out Now

A new cd release from Kent.
For Dancers Forty - Various Artists  - CDKEND 514
For Dancers Forty revisits the US Modern and Kent labels that started it all off
The Lp version was released last month, but this the cd version differs a great deal, from than the vinyl version, with only 3 tracks being found on both
As always, the cd comes with an informative 20-page glossy leaflet, with photos and notes by Ady Croasdell (see below for preview scans)
Release notes from Ace Records follow below
Release notes
Kent Records are commemorating 40 years since the LP Kent 001 “For Dancers Only” hit the record shops of 1982 with resounding success. Our new CD “For Dancers Forty” revisits the US Modern and Kent labels that started it all off.
We have already released a “For Dancers Forty” LP but though the compilations share the same celebratory title, only three tracks feature on both. We didn’t want to neglect our digital customers at the expense of the vinyl hounds.
The collection represents the breadth of label-owners Saul, Jules, Joe and Lester Bihari’s recordings, featuring stompers, Rhythm & Blues rockers, girl soul grooves group harmony and sublime ballads.
Several tracks are new to Kent CDs. There are previously unheard 1966 soul recording from 50s Modern R&B artists Aaron Collins and his siters The Teen Queens, guitarist/songwriter Arthur Adams and soul-crooner Billy Watkins. Kent stalwarts Mary Love and Z Z Hill are featured, musically and on the front cover, with a recently discovered studio shot. As with Kent 001 we feature the R&B sounds of the label from T-Bone Walker, Little Joe Blue, Flash Terry and the mighty B B King. There are underplayed tracks by Jeanette Jones, Lowell Fulson and Tommy Youngblood – whose moody LP-only track ‘Tobacco Road North’ has been sampled by US rappers.
As ever on our rare soul scene, it is the lesser-known artists who we spotlight - there are largely unheard tracks by Teddy Reynolds (from a very obscure Twist LP), King Solomon and a plaintive ballad from Beatrice Lee.  Northern Soul devotees will enjoy The Sweethearts’ Motownesque ‘No More Tears’, Jimmy Bee’s new and improved ‘Wanting You’ with added chorus, which has a digital debut and Clay Hammond’s cult mover ‘You Brought It All On Yourself’ reappears after several years absence. The funk-edged crowd get the first re-release of Foxfire’s manic take on Fulson’s ‘Tramp’, and new to Kent are Larry (Perault) & Tommy (Bush) doing a version of Shorty Long’s ‘Here Comes The Judge’.
Four decades of supplying soul and still so much more to come; here’s to the artists, writers, musicians and producers – CHEERS!

'It Hurts So Good' New Lp From Soul4Real

'It Hurts So Good' Soul4Real Album
After 31 singles released it´s so exciting to announce the first ever album on Soul4Real, a compilation including 𝘀𝗶𝘅 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 by James and Bobby Purify, Esther Phillips, Walter Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight & The Pips and Marvin Gaye.

It doesn’t always hurt to hurt…
Soul 4 Real’s first venture into the albums market is as compellingly essential as the label’s impressive singles catalogue. Its 11 tracks explore every lonely street and losers avenue that soul music has walked down since the early 60s, tempering essays of heartbreak and love lost with the occasional glimpse of positivity and happiness. “It Hurts So Good” is very much in the tradition of those great 60s soul compilations where diverse strands of black American music sat side by side with each other, and still formed a satisfying listening experience despite their apparent disparity because, in the final analysis, the music mattered most.
Just as it does here, in fact.
This album showcases just under a dozen goodies by some very big names in soul. It may well be that one or two of the tracks might be less than familiar to you, but you will know the artists – and you will know, too, that they will never let you down. Originally unissued tracks by James & Bobby Purify and Walter Jackson blend seamlessly with early essentials from Aretha Franklin, Willie Hutch and the Main Ingredient (as the Insiders). Soul 4 Real has delved into the deeper parts of discographies of legendary artists like Marvin Gaye, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight & The Pips and Esther Phillips to bring you songs and performances that are every bit as unforgettable as those that forged their reputations. And if you remain unmoved after experiencing the stellar offerings from the Soul Children and Lou Courtney, it may well be that you didn’t have a soul to begin with.
In the song that gives this collection its title, the great Prince Phillip Mitchell wrote “it ain’t no good unless it hurts a little bit”. It’s true, and the ‘Hurt’ here really IS ‘So Good’…and then some…
…Soul 4 Real – for real.

Who Saved 'Do I Love You? - Bruce Springsteen Feature

The Guardian website is running a feature titled...
Bruce Springsteen cover reignites row over lost northern soul classic
Who saved Frank Wilson’s Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) from Motown oblivion?
When Bruce Springsteen performed his new single on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on 14 November, it was to rapturous applause and the ecstatic US talkshow host leaping from his seat to declare that the Boss had “crushed it!”
But 3,300 miles away, Springsteen’s performance of the lost Motown classic Do I Love You (Indeed I Do), from his new album of soul covers, Only The Strong Survive, was reigniting a debate that has raged for almost half a century.
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/nov/19/bruce-springsteen-cover-reignites-row-over-lost-northern-soul-classic

The feature concerns itself with a 'row' between Richard Searling and Russ Winstanleys and airs both of their versions of events...
Of course there is this one as well...
https://www.soul-source.co.uk/articles/soul-articles/frank-wilson-the-story-of-do-i-love-you-indeed-i-do-r2565/

The end line of the Guardian article says
The row over who discovered Do I Love You notwithstanding, northern soul fans are at least united in applause for Springsteen. Searling says: “Whatever purists might think of his cover of Do I Love You, he has brought the song to a new audience at last.”
a recent topic on here gives a slightly different view...

Chuck Cockerham - A Brief Interview

Chuck Cockerham Interview (albeit A Very Brief One).
After following up on a few leads I finally got to speak with the man behind the voice of one of the most iconic crossover records of all time, “Have I Got A Right” released on the Bell records subsidiary label Mala, the one and only Mr Chuck Cockerham. A very nice guy who agreed to briefly answer one or two of the questions that I wished to put to him. He is reputedly working with another party regarding the compiling of memoirs for a future publication and therefore only agreed to offer up limited information to some of my questions the results of which are as follows:
Charles Harold Cockerham pronounced as ‘Cockeram’ with a silent ‘H’ was born in Durham, North Carolina during 1945 and being later raised in the city of Greensboro, NC. He initially began singing in his School choir which was instrumental in him forming his own Doowop group by the name of the Objectives during the early 1960’s. From 1963 to 1965 they worked regularly, culminating in the release of their solitary 45 single on Stan Lewis’s Jewel label, “Oh My Love (Come Back To Me)/Love Went Away” (Jewel 751). The Objectives later broke up following the death of Chuck’s best friend and the group’s first tenor, at this point Chuck temporarily retired from performing but later made a brief return when starting a rock group, a scenario which Chuck chose not to divulge any further information upon.

In 1969 Chuck was invited to join the vocal group Bill Pinkney And The Original Drifters, the group he was to perform and record with for the rest of his performing career.

Also in 1969 and just prior to joining the Original Drifters Chuck was to record his now legendary solitary solo, Mala 45. Through a chance meeting with Fred Tanner and his fellow producer Johnny Coffman, Chuck recorded the now high desirable and respected Fred Tanner penned “Have I Got A Right” backed with Hey There”. Chuck remembers that the song did receive some airplay throughout the Carolina’s upon it’s release, albeit somewhat limited. “Have I Got A Right/Hey There” was recorded at one off studio session with Chuck never ever performing the songs again.

Now enjoying life as a retired performing artist, Chuck is fully aware of the huge popularity and price tag Interviewof his Mala 45 throughout the UK and indeed the rest of the world’s rare soul collector’s scene. With regards to the later, group version by The Nomads, Chuck is also aware of that but was not involved with it in any shape or form as has sometimes been reputedly mentioned. So there you have it, the sum total of what Mr Chuck Cockerham was prepare to divulge to me during our brief conversation.

New Book - Soul Stories a novel by Stephen Riley.

SOUL STORIES: a novel by Stephen Riley.
Soul Stories is the follow-up to The Truth About Northern Soul, but unlike its predecessor, it is fiction – well, kinda, sorta… The author explains:
“When The Truth About Northern Soul was published, it attracted a huge amount of feedback – most of it positive, I am pleased to say. One comment in particular, from a friend who knows me from way back, caught my eye. She asked why I hadn’t included certain other stories. There are two answers: firstly, The Truth About Northern Soul only needed a limited number of examples to make its case – any more would have just belaboured points and added little to the discourse. Secondly, many such stories could be embarrassing or hurtful to individuals or their families. But, from that question the idea of producing a work of fiction emerged. I didn’t, however, want just to create a piece of reportage with the names changed, and I have therefore taken the freedom afforded by fiction to get closer to the human experience of events and write creatively – to tell a story. In short, if I have been building something, The Truth About Northern Soul is the bricks and Soul Stories is the mortar that fills the gaps and holds it all together.”
Synopsis:
A bundle of diaries is delivered anonymously to an historian. As he reads through them, he pieces together the tale of a group of young friends irresistibly drawn to the burgeoning soul music scene in the North of England at the beginning of the 1970s. Enchanted by the passionate music and the ecstatic all-night dance clubs, the friends follow a path from innocence to experience, from youth clubs and street-corner flirtations to somewhere none of them could have imagined.
After the narrator sets the scene, the book takes the form of a series of short stories, which seem at first only to be connected by the characters and the passage of time, but gradually an overall narrative emerges.
While the northern soul scene is a key reference point, Soul Stories goes far beyond that. It explores the characters’ lives both in those dark, exhilarating clubs and in a much broader hinterland. Riley creates in authentic detail the highs and lows of youthful experience in the 1970s: friendships, family, work, football, love and night-time misdemeanours, all set to a backcloth of Cortinas, frenetic all-nighters and smoky pubs. As the title suggests, Soul Stories is a series of tales ‘from the soul’ and about the souls who populate the book.
Liberated by fiction, Soul Stories expands on themes introduced in The Truth About Northern Soul (2019). A handful of tales from that earlier book are reimagined, set to the music of fiction and supplemented with hundreds more new stories to create a compelling overall narrative thread, which grows in intensity as the book develops.
Whereas Soul Stories is the follow-up to The Truth About Northern Soul, it is by no means only about the northern soul scene. The Truth About Northern Soul was aimed at audiences who wanted to read about the subject because they were part of the scene back in the day, or because they weren’t but would like to have been, or because they had an academic or a casual interest of some sort in the northern soul scene. While Soul Stories should appeal to those same audiences, it will also have meaning for a broader audience with little or no attachment to the northern soul scene, just as it is possible to enjoy Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch without being an Arsenal fan, or Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting without being a junkie.
Ultimately, Soul Stories is a universal tale of coming of age.
Comments:
F J Paton:“I wondered where it was going at first – the stories all seemed so innocent. But it gradually became darker and more compelling. To that extent, it reminded me of ‘Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha’. The closer it got to the end, the more I couldn’t bear to put it down. And when I finished it, I went straight back to the beginning and started again!”
Tim Bates: “the visceral joy of the music,” “punctuated by some very funny moments,” “a deft touch with physical injuries and automotive mishaps,” “proper showing not telling.”
Lesley Britton: “I really enjoyed it. It was evocative of the time and really brought those places to life. It made me laugh and cry.”

How To Sing Your Way Out Of Jail: The Charles L. Blakely Story.

In 1969, a 20 year old Charles Lorenzo Blakely along with fellow members of the street gang he hung out with became involved in a shoot out with another rival Milwaukee street gang which resulted in the death of one of their rivals members. Following the arrival of the Police, the shoot out developed into a high speed car chase with Charles being the driver of one of one of the evading vehicles. Charles’s vehicle was eventually brought to a halt when the Cops shot out all four tyres which caused the car to crash at 90mph into a department store called Schuster’s Warehouse. The other occupants of the vehicle managed to get away with the exception of Charles (who himself was packing a gun) having being shot twice by the Cops in the back and shoulder as well as sporting a broken arm received in the crash was the sole arrest at the scene of the crash. Following his arrest and conviction he was sentenced to 30 years for ‘Attempted 1st Degree Murder’ (due to the shots being exchanged with the Police) and a consecutive 10 year sentence for ‘Eluding’ (evading) arrest in a high speed car chase. After a subsequent retrial Charles as the car driver was found not to have been directly involved in actually shooting at the Police, so the initial 30 year sentence was quashed leaving Charles to continue the subsequent 10 year sentence at the high security Green Bay Reformatory in Allouez, Wisconsin.
At the time a common practice within the US Prison System was to encourage inmates who had shown some musical ability to channel their energy into performing as groups for their own and their inmate’s entertainment. Thus in 1970 Charles Blakely formed his first ensemble under the name of the Mansion, a name he chose after reading a book on English Stately Homes!

The Mansion’s line up included at different times Michael Locke, Stanley Newburn, Carl Anderson, John Crawford, Michael Smith, Larry Moses, Ronald Hardin, Jerome Wagner, Lewis Lister, Maurice Payne and Charles himself. One day while rehearsing in the prison chapel, The Mansion attracted the attention of the warden’s wife who happened to be showing some local dignitaries around. Impressed by what she heard the warden’s wife was instrumental in The Mansion being invited to perform for the city’s television station WBAY, where they recording two holiday programs. The warden later gave them permission to perform outside the prison which brought them to the attention of a Milwaukee neighbourhood program adviser by the name of Al Dunlap of the Commando Project One.  It was through Dunlap that The Mansion recorded their solitary 45 release in 1974 “The Girl Next Door /Stop! Let Your Heart Be Your Guide” for the local Milwaukee label Gibbs (406). The label’s owner Bill Gibbs held the release back until some of the members of The Mansion were granted their release papers, as prisoners were unable to sign any contract agreements while still incarcerated at that time. Although Charles Blakely remained incarcerated, he was later moved to a medium security prison in Fox Lake County, Wisconsin. While there he formed a further group, a gospel ensemble called the ‘Bell Tones’ who’s line up included Charles, Mayweather Lee, Joe Hayes, and Levell Rudd. The formation of this group was seen as major factor in Charles’s rehabilitation which led to his eventual parole in late 1976, thus serving 7 years of his initial 10 year sentence.

Once on the outside Charles with former ‘Bell Tone” member Mayweather Lee were joined by Charles (Sonny) Bryant and Jimmy Taylor to form a new ensemble by the name of The “Final Chapter”.  As the final Chapter in 1980 they recorded a solitary release for Milwaukee main man Marvel Love’s New World Label “Now I Know/Get Down For Your Action” (NW800), a brief association that for several reasons was to eventually break down. Although Jimmy Taylor left to pursue a career as a blues musician the remaining three members of the ‘Final Chapter’ continued to perform until they finally disbanded in 1987. Although recorded, further Final Chapter songs post to their new World release remained unissued, a situation soon to be rectified with their inclusion as part of a future Soul Junction project.

Charles himself is still active in the music business and is currently working on a gospel project. Following his parole in 1976 Charles has left his notorious past behind him and has stayed on the right side of the law with not even as much as a speeding ticket to his name to this day.

Miss Motown - Raynoma Gordy & Jack Gibson

“Miss Motown” Raynoma Gordy & Jack Gibson By Graham Jarvis

"Miss Motown"
The "Miss Motown" record (is one of two 45's) that completely surprised, excited and confused any and all "Motown" collectors or "Motown" interest, when one of the two 45's suddenly appeared on "Ebay" in 2015. The 45 record on a Motown Label was a gift to an unknown "Miss Motown" in 1964. This summary is how we finally resolved the "Miss Motown" mystery, following numerous searches, records, listings, archives, Motown DFTMC, and record master's listings etc. During the 1960's it was not unique for any of the key Motown staff to arrange pressing 45's on Motown labels as a one off, or any special events, albeit rare, difficult to find and usually small numbers.

Raynoma (Ray) Liles Gordy - following her marriage breakup in 1963 and the final divorce agreement instigated by Berry Gordy, Ray was then to leave Motown and Detroit. Despite their divorce, they both would still continue to work together, albeit limited with Ray being sent to New York by Berry with a new role for her to set up the "NYC Motown Office" completely away from Detroit in 1963.
Bringing things back to the 21st century there was a real challenge concerning the "Miss Motown 45" that just turned up in 2015. It was a complete mystery as to what the record was about and whom it was for? After much searching, amazingly we simply discovered that the "Raynoma (Ray) Liles Gordy Singleton" biography, which was issued in 1990, titled "Berry Me & Motown" provided us with the answer. It was from her own biography that we finally identified and confirmed who the record belonged to and who it was intended for.
When it was time for Miss Ray to leave "Detroit" and in the process of moving to NYC in 1963, she then also mentioned that she would now become "Miss Motown". It is then noted from her book that she detailed her new "business name" clearly detailed on: "Page 139 - Chapter 9 - New York -1963 (extract below) namely: "a quick change operation in the sky and came out as "Miss Motown".
It is worth noting that despite this new name many Motown artists and staff still continued to use her original name as "Miss Ray".

The above record links Jack Gibson (Jack the Rapper) to the “Miss Motown 45” which was a personal gift in 1964. This is clearly detailed on the Motown 45 record. We can now also define “Miss Motown” as being Raynoma Gordy (as was): from her book being “Chapter 9. New York” (exert detailed above).
Jack Gibson “Jack The Rapper”
Originally and not knowing much about Jack Gibson especially his role with Motown, was quite a surprise concerning his critical involvement with the company having worked for Berry Gordy for five years 1961-1966. Details as to the Jack Gibson’s biography “Mellow Yellow” is relevant and also clearly references his role for the period in working for Berry Gordy & Motown from 1961 through to 1966 (Berry Gordy fired Jack Gibson in 1966, allegedly being involved with Motown album bootlegs).
Prior to Jack Gibson “Jack the Rapper” moving to Detroit in 1961 he was one of the top DJ’s in the U.S. throughout the late 1950’s and the early 1960’s before he went to work for Berry Gordy and Motown. Jack was originally based on WCIN Radio out of Cincinnati in Ohio. Berry took the  opportunity in 1961 for Jack to come to work for Motown. This is detailed in Jack’s biography (namely: Chapter 12 Page 111). He openly agreed to work for Berry from 1961, he continued to commute from his home in Cleveland Ohio due to his family and children as the distance was not too far. The journey being 168 miles from Cleveland to Detroit taking 2hrs 45 mins by car, however he regularly flew to Detroit rather than drive instead. Jack also mentions (Page 122) his birthday being the same date as Stevie Wonder & Mary Wells. He also mentions that all three of them have the same birthday being the 13th of May. Thereafter and for each year it was a huge Motown birthday party for everyone to celebrate!
Not only was Jack a good friend of Ray, but also Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Mary Wells, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and others. He regularly went to New York & other cities to visit all of the record & radio stations including the local disc jockeys in promoting records and artists and taking with him some of the current Motown artists. He also had a close relationship with Ray as she was not only a Motown senior partner (originally) but on her leaving Detroit he also supported her in her 1964 move to New York.

“MISS MOTOWN” Record
The good thing about the Miss Motown 45 in that there is no real purpose anyone would or could press this record other than in 1964, as it being likely that it is Raynoma's voice that had been used for “Jingles” on Jack Gibsons radio shows which was then also used for this specific “Miss Motown” record. Only Jack Gibson would have the recordings that he then used on this 45 or on his regular radio show. Jack had access to a number of pressing plants that he would use, he then utilised his recordings of the voice on tape(s) or acetate as per the record gift as detailed on the 45.
None of any recordings of either Jack Gibson or Raynoma Gordy from 1963/64 exist, this included anything for those with access to any relevant data concerning Jack Gibson and any Jingles. Any potential existing or unissued sound files that were also from the early sixties and / or any voice recordings, again were not available either.
As regards the Miss Motown 45 from 1964 up to the year 2015 no one knew anything about "Miss Motown" or the Motown 45 record (complete with the 6t’s “Delta Release Number” in the runout groove). When the first copy turned up in 2015 most Motown “junkies” or collectors were surprised, excited, curious or dismissive, and/or an attempt in bidding on this record listed on Ebay. Quite a number watched the bidding and many also actually decided to bid on this rarity, however many missed the copy as it sold for over $300. The follow up discussions on the back of this specific 45. appearing in 2015 was just guess work, many also trashed the record as nobody had any ideas concerning “Miss Motown” or “Jack Gibson” with it being a complete mystery.
It is supposed that Berry Gordy secured the Ebay Miss Motown 45 in 2015. Only two copies exist, the second copy turned up at the same time and was sold to a UK dealer. On finally establishing who Jack Gibson & Miss Motown were, we then looked to establish the sound files and the
voice on the record. We already had Raynoma’s voice, as “Little Iva” (Pseudonym) and also with the two girl groups she sang with, around 1959, (Cute-Teens on Aladdin being one). More importantly in more recent years we have
open access to two “Youtube Motown Shows” being:
"Joan Collins & Geraldo”

“The Joan Rivers Show”

Both having “Raynoma Liles Gordy Singleton” as a guest, giving us for the first time the chance to hear her voice in full conversation(s).

Summary
There is then a story as to the purpose of the rare Miss Motown record as a special gift as clearly detailed on the Motown 45: “Very Personal and Very Special Thanks”
Without “Raynoma (Ray) Liles Gordy Singleton” there would have been no Motown. She was key to everything that happened with both Berry & Motown in its infant years. Jack Gibson was also with Motown in the early years and worked in Detroit from 1961 to 1966, both Jack & Raynoma were also very good friends.
The “45 Record” says it all, but it is your own view of the “Special Record” and the main purpose of the record when given to Raynoma by Jack Gibson. This is a key part of Motown’s history as “Miss Motown” was a joint owner of Motown along with Berry Gordy until their divorce. When Ray moved to New York the output from the N.Y. Motown office was some of the greatest none Motown Label Soul 45’s providing some of the most sort after “Northern Soul” records out of the N.Y. office and later from L.A.
This Miss Motown 45 is a key part of the Motown history that Raynoma had kept to herself for all those years until she passed away. It was only then that the two known copies surfaced, it took several years of searching before being able to establish this rare and specific “Motown Special” that left behind a very personal gift between two of the senior staff, (Berry aside) that were both involved in helping build Motown.

Final Summary
Raynoma Mayberry Liles Gordy Singleton sadly passed away 11 November 2016.
We can only presume that Raynoma had disposed of the records just before she passed away in 2016. It is then likely that any records and other things would have been disposed of or given away. It was in 2015 that the two records were then sold, the records might have had no interest or value to anyone else at that time.
Jack Gibson passed away 30 January 2000.
Nothing from Jack Gibson following his death was anything to do with Motown concerning any effects or documents that are known.
There is also an irony to both of their biographies in that neither mentioned each other. However, Jack passed away in the year 2000. He never got to see his biography as it was not until 2015 that Walker Smith published Jack’s book “Mellow Yellow”. He knew Jack Gibson well and from 1997 through to Jacks death in 2000, Jack wrote his own story via Walker Smith before he died.
Concerning the two biographies and any references including the copyright is the ownership of the two individuals concerned and / or their families. This also includes any and all photographs being the courtesy of the rightful owners.

Site News - James Rice Mod of Markt/Sales - Moving On

A quick site news style post just to inform all that the long-standing Markt/Sales moderator James Rice aka @James Rice is stepping down from his role tomorrow.
James has chosen to step down as he wants to focus more on his new job which he will be starting soon.
Regular users and readers of our Soul Markt section will be well aware of the top job that he has done over the last four years (since March 2018).  Always acting in a most measured calm manner which given some of the heated disputes that occur is a lot harder than it sounds.
Thanks to James I 'd say the Soul Markt has grown and developed into a very much more busy, useful and worthwhile section of the site over his time.
So on behalf of the Source time, just like to wish James all the best for his new job, and say thanks for all the time and effort along with a personal 'good luck' with the new job

New 45 - The Mansion - Soul Junction Records

Details of the next Soul Junction 45 release are out, available in just under 2 weeks
Release Date:   Monday 7th November 2022
Artist Bio:
The Mansion were initially a prison group formed by Charles Lorenzo Blakely in 1970 while serving time in the Green Bay Reformatory at Allouez, Wisconsin.  The Mansion’s line up included at different times Michael Locke, Stanley Newburn, Carl Anderson, John Crawford, Michael Smith, Larry Moses, Ronald Hardin, Jerome Wagner, Larry Lister, Maurice Payne and Charles himself. Let Your Heart Be Your Guide” for a local Milwaukee label Gibbs (406). The label’s owner Bill Gibbs held the release back until some of the members of the Mansion were granted their release papers as at that time prisoners were unable to sign any contract agreements while still incarcerated. Although Charles Blakely remained incarcerated, he was later moved to a medium security prison in Fox Lake County, Wisconsin. While there he formed a gospel group, called the ‘Bell Tones’ who’s line up included Charles, Mayweather Lee, Joe Hayes, and Levell Rudd. The formation of this group was seen as major factor in Charles’s rehabilitation which led to his eventual parole in 1976.
Once on the outside Charles with former ‘Bell Tone” member Mayweather Lee were joined by Charles (Sonny) Bryant and Jimmy Taylor to form a new ensemble by the name of The “Final Chapter”.  As the final Chapter they recorded a solitary release for Marvel Love’s New World Label “Now I Know/Get Down For Your Action” (NW800) during 1980, a brief association that for several reasons was to eventually brake down. Although Jimmy Taylor left to pursue a career as a blues musician the remaining three members of the ‘Final Chapter’ continued to perform until they finally disbanded in 1987.
Three previously unissued Final Chapter songs can be found on Soul Junction Various Artists CD compilation “We Got A Sweet Thing going On” Volume II. The Mansion’s Gibbs 45 is now is a highly prized and sort after item amongst Sweet and Group Soul collectors.

BBC Archive Mod Revival 1979 News Report

A msm view of the 'mod' revival back in 1979 from the BBC Archive

James Hogg reports on the mod revival currently taking place in London. He interviews Ian Page - the vocalist with the new mod group Secret Affair - and John Entwistle of mod's elder statesmen The Who. Is the mod rebirth just a flash-in-the-pan, motivated by money, or is there more to it than that? The whole affair is regarded with some amusement in Yorkshire, where the mod scene never really went away, and where there are still several thriving scooter clubs. What do these veteran mods make of what is happening down in London?

Originally broadcast 13 September, 1979.

New Retro Soul 45 by Claire Davis - Long Gone - LRK RECORDS (LRK-17) - Pre-Order Now

After the success of 'Thrive ' & 'Playground" LRK are excited to be able to share with you a brand new 45 by Claire Davis.
https://lrkrecords.bandcamp.com/album/long-gone-2
A jewel of Canada’s Soul scene, Claire Davis takes it up a notch and showcases her mighty vocals on the fiery breakup single “Long Gone”. Drawing from her influences of the likes of Etta James and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, the unrelenting rhythm and sassy background vocals of this track complement the “take-no-mess” message of Davis’ lyrics and vocal delivery. A song about knowing your worth and walking away from those who don’t! Claire Davis is an analog enthusiast, opting to record to tape whenever possible to best capture the feel and energy of a live performance and this single does not disappoint. The track was co-written by Toronto based artist Kyla Charter and producer Scott McCannell whom Davis has excitedly collaborated with for years on various other projects in Toronto’s R&B/Soul scene. The saucy background vocal arrangement from composer/arranger La-Nai Gabriel provided the icing on the cake for this record which features dynamic background vocals from Aphrose, Tegan Michelle Gordon, and Chynna Lewis.

Available on 7” Vinyl on Wednesday November 30th, 2022
Pre-Order from Friday October 14th, 2022 via LRK Records
The flip side to be announced early Nov

Long Gone by Claire Davis
Claire Davis is a musical time traveller. Known for her mighty and expressive vocals, Davis authentically and effortlessly brought the sounds of ‘60s and ‘70s soul into the present on her debut solo EP Thrive. Recording the EP to tape, Davis stayed true to the golden years of soul music that inspire her most, “I wanted to have the flavour of some of my favourite soul records while also being unique compositionally.” Davis explains, “Using an analog process is all about capturing the vibe of a performance, it’s a practice in giving up the idea of perfection and tapping into the moment when you’re recording.” Carving out her reputation as a powerhouse frontwoman and background vocalist in the Toronto music scene, Davis joined seven-piece retro funk ensemble YUKA as their lead singer on full-length album releases From the Ancients (2014) and Dreamscape (2019) to critical acclaim.
Regarded as one of the best live acts coming out of Toronto, YUKA shared the stage with The Dap-Kings, Lee Fields and the Expressions, Treme Brass Band, and The Souljazz Orchestra. Davis also established herself as a go-to background vocalist for all things soul, performing with
legends Martha Reeves (of Martha & the Vandellas), Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, and Jully Black, top Toronto breakout artists Charlotte Day Wilson, Jessie Reyez, and Daniel Caesar.
Stepping out on her own as a solo artist, Davis teamed up with producer and YUKA bandmate Scott McCannelll to write and record her debut EP, Thrive. An EP that explores themes of relationships and heartbreak, the title track centres on the relationship we have with ourselves -- the relationship that all else is built upon, “We blossom the most when we love and take care of ourselves first. It’s the only thing we can truly control.” says Claire of the track. Thrive was released digitally on July 16, 2021 and was followed up with a 7” vinyl release on UK label LRK
Records which sold out presales in just over a day.

Lee Fields: Faithful Man Documentary
WORLD PREMIERE
Dir. Jessamyn Ansary and Joyce Mishaan, 2022, USA, 80 min

His voice has been compared to James Brown, but Lee Fields is no knock-off. He’s the real thing. Listening to the soul sounds coming through his transistor radio in the late fifties and early sixties, Lee was hooked. Through the seventies, he made his living touring the legendary Chitlin’ Circuit alongside some of the greatest names in blues and soul history. He landed a gig with Kool and the Gang before their rise to fame. But, as the seventies came to a close, disco began its reign and Lee's soul career plummeted. For decades, he thought his music dreams were dead. But with one phone call, everything changed...
Event supported by the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery.

Spooner Oldham produced six recordings by Barbara Lynn for Atlantic in mid-1968, but session information had previously been scant. Spooner recently confirmed that these tracks were "recorded at American in Memphis" and when the late Red Kelly (Soul Detective) digitised guitarist Reggie Young's session diaries, his endeavours presented further clarity.
Reggie's 1968 diary indicates two American sessions on June 14th and 15th. Four songs were recorded, with "Unloved, Unwanted Me" being shelved. No songwriting credit was documented, but its sorrowful yearning is perfectly executed by Barbara.
A third session the following month yielded two more songs, including the first known recording of "Soul Deep" (its writer Wayne Carson and The Box Tops each recorded the song in 1969). Reggie's diary documents a fortnight's holiday in July, but the distinct lack of guitar and the audible presence of other American Studio musicians further suggests Barbara Lynn's version was possibly recorded in Memphis too.
Both songs make their 7" vinyl debut here. Enjoy!

It was not until early 1965 that Mary Wells officially left Motown. After a brief stay at 20th Century Fox, she signed for the Atlantic subsidiary Atco Records, and was placed in the very capable hands of Gerald Sims and Carl Davis.
Some tapes of unissued material from this period have been unearthed over the years, and here for the first time on vinyl we have two real delights.
First up is the blatantly Chicago-esque lilting and catchy "Love Letters". Gerald Sims appears to have seen the potential in letter writing as a vehicle for Mary’s talent, and just as with "Dear Lover" it works perfectly. With an introduction that may well have provided the template for that of The Soul Brothers Six, "I’ll Be Loving You", Mary drifts effortlessly through a magical Carl Davis midtempo production.
On the other side, "Hands Off My Baby" is far more reminiscent of her earlier Detroit days, which is unsurprising coming from the pens of Richard Popcorn Wylie and Tony Hester.
