Newport Soul Nite

Golden Eye Soul Club- Walkabout Bar, Bridge St, Newport, Wales. I was one of the DJs at this soul nite on Saturday 22nd January. The nite was run by Dan, Simon and Mike and a great venue it was with a good wooden dancefloor and well run bar. The music was tops spun by Dan, Simon,Vince Ayres, Andy Hutchins and myself. Music ranged from across the board such as Soul Bros Incorporated, Righteous Bros, Lou Pride, Jackie Beavers and Bobby Kline. Everybody seemed to have a good time but unfortunatly numbers were low due to the weather, which was too white for my liking! What Id say to you soulies, look out for the next one here as it is well worth the trip! Keep The Faith- Matt (Trowbridge)

Feb On The Scene out - info and a quick look at the articles

Latest issue of "On The Scene" is out and about, with an interesting article on a long running saga The new booklet format is a great improvement, meaning that you just dont get the latest event info free of charge but also now get some informative and enjoyable reading thrown in as well, which has to be a good thing!

This month features the usual soul, mod and scooter events easy to look up, listing and also a 2 page article billed as the "Ian Levine and the four vandals-the true story". Which is interesting reading as the author has gone for a "true and unbiased view" and includes bits like Ginger detailing how he paid £800 and the details behind him buying it and what really went on behind the curtains at togetherness.

Some interesting points come up in this article, such as levine appearing to admit he lied about the whole thing from the begining but claims was to prove a point and not for finanical gain.

As said its all interesting stuff and whilst does cover most aspects, there are a few things not mentioned that may cause some to doubt levines claims.

More on this later. Anyway back to On the Scene, should be out and about at a venue near you soon, and as always anything that is free, usefull and informative to the soul fan cant be a bad thing!

Im Gonna Make You Love Me - Gladys Knight&The Pips Berry Gordy's genius was to establish a music company combining the two distinct elements he knew best: one, family -a family of labels driven by a family of producers and performers - and, two, songs - an in-house publishing company. One could feed the other, meaning Motown's growing stable of talent always had songs to sing: a hot song was often covered endlessly, while a song that may not have the right feel could be matched up with another singer. Motown Sings Motown Treasures offers an extraordinary glimpse into the process, featuring 45 songs that ended up as hits for someone else. Some are the original versions - who knew that wannabe-pop-star Tommy Good cut the original vocal to the Four Tops' "Ask The Lonely" to their same backing track? Some are original song sketches: Imagine getting an insider's look into how Marvin Gaye shaped "Baby I'm For Real" into a No. 1 hit for The Originals - by handing completely different lyrics to Bobby Taylor. Or how the Isley Brothers were first given "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" - also with very different words. Some tracks are simply awesome covers, from Marvin Gaye's sweet take of "My Girl" to blues belter Hattie Littles, an early Motown act, getting nasty with Barrett Strong's "Money." Included with this new collection is a terrific booklet with track-by-track liner notes with exclusive vault details that further tell the song's stories, plus recording dates and an introductory essay by Grammy® nominee Adam White. Of the set's 45 cuts, 21 were previously issued as Motown Sings Motown Treasure Vol. 1, with scant information, in fall 1998. That album was quickly deleted and has been out of print for several years. "Ask Any Man" was previously issued on 45; the Spinners' "Shop Around" and the Vandellas' "The Tracks Of My Tears" were previously issued on vinyl in the Eighties. Message from the Family of Derek Allen

I would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts, condolences, cards, website messages and floral tributes. I would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts, condolences, cards, website messages and floral tributes.

I know Derek would have been both touched and amazed at all those who came to the funeral, especially so near to Christmas. He would have been suitably embarrassed at so much attention. I am so sure he was watching especially when the sun shone through the window near the end of the service. I am extremely grateful to those friends who arranged the venue and the food afterwards. Derek is irreplaceable in our lives; he loved his family and adopted my relatives as his own. Iam sure, by the thoughts that have been expressed over the last month that many of you will remember him for quite some time to come. He was a kind, thoughtful, honest and gentle man who loved his music and will be greatly missed. He was taken too soon and I cannot imagine my life without him. Paula Allen

Sleepless Nights Newsletter Dec 04 Dublin Northern Soul

Yo ho ho folks. well what a week that was. Our christmas party was looming and one slight technical hitch.....emm we didnt have a venue..... Id had a bad feeling on the eve and decided to check with the Gingerman and finally yes they confirmed we didnt have a confirmed booking. Call it bad luck, stress, problem of not having a permanent home or me just being a complete ^osser panic stations.... what will i tell John D and all.
All roads led to freakoutville then I rang Doyles to see if upstairs was anyway ready yet. "No but weve just bought pub next door, can let you have their function room" And so it was the faithful trundled into yet another temporary venue albeit right next door to our "home". A packed location, typical Dublin party mood we got on with it. Got home soberish, forgot keys, Donna at relatives i decided best i broke a window. Long story...
And on a rare weekend with two nights of soul we had a charity night in the Commercial Rowing Club SN + McScoots. Early on it was Scooter sounds gratiously making way for the Northern. Great to see Paul Mulholland&Paul Grant in the mainroom and some dinosaurs making their way upstairs to the modern sounds of Ross, Joe, Brian&more... this was a feel good night with no barriers. Sorry Paddy Kane you didnt win the raffle!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Soul Source, Excellent site!
Its brilliant to see the same level of passion energising the scene these days as was apparent back in the late 60s and early 70s - an age which I classify as the golden era of Northern Soul. Congratulations on a first-class site!
I hope you will continue to attract a new generation of enthusiasts to the cause. Please keep up the good work.
Yours Sincerely,

Liked it! Dave Dixon Email: Url: posted May 01, 2001 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Like the new site Mike. It seems very sophisticated and a lot of the new functionality goes over my head. It takes northern soul sites to a new level - now I just need to get familiar with it.

Latest Info on Prestatyn 2005 availbility

Latest news from Soul Weekenders Website: Well Christmas is nearly here and we had virtually sold out all available accommodation for the 2005 weekender. We have now "doubled up" some of our DJs and shuffled a few people around who asked to share and we have added that extra accommodation to the system. We now have around 35 apartments left, including a couple of Club and Classic places which have been "sold out " for months ! If you want them grab them quick ! This will be your final chance to get in! Remember we have not had to advertise this event this year it has been done via word of mouth and on friends recommendation! So that speaks for its self. Once again we remind you that we do not Weekender passes for this event, you have to book accommodation and stay on site to get in. Everyone we speak to says how much they are looking forward to Prestatyn 2005 the countdown has already started and we are the first major event of the year. Be There. Merry Christmas and heres to a very Soulful 2005 Prestatyn Web Team http://www.soul-weekenders.co.uk

Since we returned to the UK we have been inundated by calls and Emails from the artists, who expressed their absolute delight at meeting "The Brits". They were overwhelmed with our knowledge, passion for their music, respect and friendliness. It really had an uplifting effect on them, with many reunions between fellow artists that had not seen each other for over thirty years. Along with the artists, we have received many incredibly kind and supportive words. It was certainly one of the most memorable trips that we have ever enjoyed, and it was a pleasure to share such a superb experience with many Northern / Modern fans. Many have asked us "Whats next?" And, as you may be aware, we are planning another trip across the pond in late April 2006. The trip will be offered at an inclusive price of £799.00 per person to all ages based on two people sharing (please note no admittance to bars / soul nights for under 18s).
