How To Sing Your Way Out Of Jail: The Charles L. Blakely Story.

In 1969, a 20 year old Charles Lorenzo Blakely along with fellow members of the street gang he hung out with became involved in a shoot out with another rival Milwaukee street gang which resulted in the death of one of their rivals members. Following the arrival of the Police, the shoot out developed into a high speed car chase with Charles being the driver of one of one of the evading vehicles. Charles’s vehicle was eventually brought to a halt when the Cops shot out all four tyres which caused the car to crash at 90mph into a department store called Schuster’s Warehouse. The other occupants of the vehicle managed to get away with the exception of Charles (who himself was packing a gun) having being shot twice by the Cops in the back and shoulder as well as sporting a broken arm received in the crash was the sole arrest at the scene of the crash. Following his arrest and conviction he was sentenced to 30 years for ‘Attempted 1st Degree Murder’ (due to the shots being exchanged with the Police) and a consecutive 10 year sentence for ‘Eluding’ (evading) arrest in a high speed car chase. After a subsequent retrial Charles as the car driver was found not to have been directly involved in actually shooting at the Police, so the initial 30 year sentence was quashed leaving Charles to continue the subsequent 10 year sentence at the high security Green Bay Reformatory in Allouez, Wisconsin.
At the time a common practice within the US Prison System was to encourage inmates who had shown some musical ability to channel their energy into performing as groups for their own and their inmate’s entertainment. Thus in 1970 Charles Blakely formed his first ensemble under the name of the Mansion, a name he chose after reading a book on English Stately Homes!

The Mansion’s line up included at different times Michael Locke, Stanley Newburn, Carl Anderson, John Crawford, Michael Smith, Larry Moses, Ronald Hardin, Jerome Wagner, Lewis Lister, Maurice Payne and Charles himself. One day while rehearsing in the prison chapel, The Mansion attracted the attention of the warden’s wife who happened to be showing some local dignitaries around. Impressed by what she heard the warden’s wife was instrumental in The Mansion being invited to perform for the city’s television station WBAY, where they recording two holiday programs. The warden later gave them permission to perform outside the prison which brought them to the attention of a Milwaukee neighbourhood program adviser by the name of Al Dunlap of the Commando Project One.  It was through Dunlap that The Mansion recorded their solitary 45 release in 1974 “The Girl Next Door /Stop! Let Your Heart Be Your Guide” for the local Milwaukee label Gibbs (406). The label’s owner Bill Gibbs held the release back until some of the members of The Mansion were granted their release papers, as prisoners were unable to sign any contract agreements while still incarcerated at that time. Although Charles Blakely remained incarcerated, he was later moved to a medium security prison in Fox Lake County, Wisconsin. While there he formed a further group, a gospel ensemble called the ‘Bell Tones’ who’s line up included Charles, Mayweather Lee, Joe Hayes, and Levell Rudd. The formation of this group was seen as major factor in Charles’s rehabilitation which led to his eventual parole in late 1976, thus serving 7 years of his initial 10 year sentence.

Once on the outside Charles with former ‘Bell Tone” member Mayweather Lee were joined by Charles (Sonny) Bryant and Jimmy Taylor to form a new ensemble by the name of The “Final Chapter”.  As the final Chapter in 1980 they recorded a solitary release for Milwaukee main man Marvel Love’s New World Label “Now I Know/Get Down For Your Action” (NW800), a brief association that for several reasons was to eventually break down. Although Jimmy Taylor left to pursue a career as a blues musician the remaining three members of the ‘Final Chapter’ continued to perform until they finally disbanded in 1987. Although recorded, further Final Chapter songs post to their new World release remained unissued, a situation soon to be rectified with their inclusion as part of a future Soul Junction project.

Charles himself is still active in the music business and is currently working on a gospel project. Following his parole in 1976 Charles has left his notorious past behind him and has stayed on the right side of the law with not even as much as a speeding ticket to his name to this day.

Miss Motown - Raynoma Gordy & Jack Gibson

“Miss Motown” Raynoma Gordy & Jack Gibson By Graham Jarvis

"Miss Motown"
The "Miss Motown" record (is one of two 45's) that completely surprised, excited and confused any and all "Motown" collectors or "Motown" interest, when one of the two 45's suddenly appeared on "Ebay" in 2015. The 45 record on a Motown Label was a gift to an unknown "Miss Motown" in 1964. This summary is how we finally resolved the "Miss Motown" mystery, following numerous searches, records, listings, archives, Motown DFTMC, and record master's listings etc. During the 1960's it was not unique for any of the key Motown staff to arrange pressing 45's on Motown labels as a one off, or any special events, albeit rare, difficult to find and usually small numbers.
Ray & Berry
Raynoma (Ray) Liles Gordy - following her marriage breakup in 1963 and the final divorce agreement instigated by Berry Gordy, Ray was then to leave Motown and Detroit. Despite their divorce, they both would still continue to work together, albeit limited with Ray being sent to New York by Berry with a new role for her to set up the "NYC Motown Office" completely away from Detroit in 1963.
Bringing things back to the 21st century there was a real challenge concerning the "Miss Motown 45" that just turned up in 2015. It was a complete mystery as to what the record was about and whom it was for? After much searching, amazingly we simply discovered that the "Raynoma (Ray) Liles Gordy Singleton" biography, which was issued in 1990, titled "Berry Me & Motown" provided us with the answer. It was from her own biography that we finally identified and confirmed who the record belonged to and who it was intended for.
When it was time for Miss Ray to leave "Detroit" and in the process of moving to NYC in 1963, she then also mentioned that she would now become "Miss Motown". It is then noted from her book that she detailed her new "business name" clearly detailed on: "Page 139 - Chapter 9 - New York -1963 (extract below) namely: "a quick change operation in the sky and came out as "Miss Motown".
It is worth noting that despite this new name many Motown artists and staff still continued to use her original name as "Miss Ray".

The above record links Jack Gibson (Jack the Rapper) to the “Miss Motown 45” which was a personal gift in 1964. This is clearly detailed on the Motown 45 record. We can now also define “Miss Motown” as being Raynoma Gordy (as was): from her book being “Chapter 9. New York” (exert detailed above).
Jack Gibson “Jack The Rapper”
Originally and not knowing much about Jack Gibson especially his role with Motown, was quite a surprise concerning his critical involvement with the company having worked for Berry Gordy for five years 1961-1966. Details as to the Jack Gibson’s biography “Mellow Yellow” is relevant and also clearly references his role for the period in working for Berry Gordy & Motown from 1961 through to 1966 (Berry Gordy fired Jack Gibson in 1966, allegedly being involved with Motown album bootlegs).
Prior to Jack Gibson “Jack the Rapper” moving to Detroit in 1961 he was one of the top DJ’s in the U.S. throughout the late 1950’s and the early 1960’s before he went to work for Berry Gordy and Motown. Jack was originally based on WCIN Radio out of Cincinnati in Ohio. Berry took the  opportunity in 1961 for Jack to come to work for Motown. This is detailed in Jack’s biography (namely: Chapter 12 Page 111). He openly agreed to work for Berry from 1961, he continued to commute from his home in Cleveland Ohio due to his family and children as the distance was not too far. The journey being 168 miles from Cleveland to Detroit taking 2hrs 45 mins by car, however he regularly flew to Detroit rather than drive instead. Jack also mentions (Page 122) his birthday being the same date as Stevie Wonder & Mary Wells. He also mentions that all three of them have the same birthday being the 13th of May. Thereafter and for each year it was a huge Motown birthday party for everyone to celebrate!
Not only was Jack a good friend of Ray, but also Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Mary Wells, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and others. He regularly went to New York & other cities to visit all of the record & radio stations including the local disc jockeys in promoting records and artists and taking with him some of the current Motown artists. He also had a close relationship with Ray as she was not only a Motown senior partner (originally) but on her leaving Detroit he also supported her in her 1964 move to New York.

“MISS MOTOWN” Record
The good thing about the Miss Motown 45 in that there is no real purpose anyone would or could press this record other than in 1964, as it being likely that it is Raynoma's voice that had been used for “Jingles” on Jack Gibsons radio shows which was then also used for this specific “Miss Motown” record. Only Jack Gibson would have the recordings that he then used on this 45 or on his regular radio show. Jack had access to a number of pressing plants that he would use, he then utilised his recordings of the voice on tape(s) or acetate as per the record gift as detailed on the 45.
None of any recordings of either Jack Gibson or Raynoma Gordy from 1963/64 exist, this included anything for those with access to any relevant data concerning Jack Gibson and any Jingles. Any potential existing or unissued sound files that were also from the early sixties and / or any voice recordings, again were not available either.
As regards the Miss Motown 45 from 1964 up to the year 2015 no one knew anything about "Miss Motown" or the Motown 45 record (complete with the 6t’s “Delta Release Number” in the runout groove). When the first copy turned up in 2015 most Motown “junkies” or collectors were surprised, excited, curious or dismissive, and/or an attempt in bidding on this record listed on Ebay. Quite a number watched the bidding and many also actually decided to bid on this rarity, however many missed the copy as it sold for over $300. The follow up discussions on the back of this specific 45. appearing in 2015 was just guess work, many also trashed the record as nobody had any ideas concerning “Miss Motown” or “Jack Gibson” with it being a complete mystery.
It is supposed that Berry Gordy secured the Ebay Miss Motown 45 in 2015. Only two copies exist, the second copy turned up at the same time and was sold to a UK dealer. On finally establishing who Jack Gibson & Miss Motown were, we then looked to establish the sound files and the
voice on the record. We already had Raynoma’s voice, as “Little Iva” (Pseudonym) and also with the two girl groups she sang with, around 1959, (Cute-Teens on Aladdin being one). More importantly in more recent years we have
open access to two “Youtube Motown Shows” being:
"Joan Collins & Geraldo”

“The Joan Rivers Show”

Both having “Raynoma Liles Gordy Singleton” as a guest, giving us for the first time the chance to hear her voice in full conversation(s).

Summary
There is then a story as to the purpose of the rare Miss Motown record as a special gift as clearly detailed on the Motown 45: “Very Personal and Very Special Thanks”
Without “Raynoma (Ray) Liles Gordy Singleton” there would have been no Motown. She was key to everything that happened with both Berry & Motown in its infant years. Jack Gibson was also with Motown in the early years and worked in Detroit from 1961 to 1966, both Jack & Raynoma were also very good friends.
The “45 Record” says it all, but it is your own view of the “Special Record” and the main purpose of the record when given to Raynoma by Jack Gibson. This is a key part of Motown’s history as “Miss Motown” was a joint owner of Motown along with Berry Gordy until their divorce. When Ray moved to New York the output from the N.Y. Motown office was some of the greatest none Motown Label Soul 45’s providing some of the most sort after “Northern Soul” records out of the N.Y. office and later from L.A.
This Miss Motown 45 is a key part of the Motown history that Raynoma had kept to herself for all those years until she passed away. It was only then that the two known copies surfaced, it took several years of searching before being able to establish this rare and specific “Motown Special” that left behind a very personal gift between two of the senior staff, (Berry aside) that were both involved in helping build Motown.
Record Title

Final Summary
Raynoma Mayberry Liles Gordy Singleton sadly passed away 11 November 2016.
We can only presume that Raynoma had disposed of the records just before she passed away in 2016. It is then likely that any records and other things would have been disposed of or given away. It was in 2015 that the two records were then sold, the records might have had no interest or value to anyone else at that time.
Jack Gibson passed away 30 January 2000.
Nothing from Jack Gibson following his death was anything to do with Motown concerning any effects or documents that are known.
There is also an irony to both of their biographies in that neither mentioned each other. However, Jack passed away in the year 2000. He never got to see his biography as it was not until 2015 that Walker Smith published Jack’s book “Mellow Yellow”. He knew Jack Gibson well and from 1997 through to Jacks death in 2000, Jack wrote his own story via Walker Smith before he died.
Concerning the two biographies and any references including the copyright is the ownership of the two individuals concerned and / or their families. This also includes any and all photographs being the courtesy of the rightful owners.

Site News - James Rice Mod of Markt/Sales - Moving On

A quick site news style post just to inform all that the long-standing Markt/Sales moderator James Rice aka @James Rice is stepping down from his role tomorrow.
James has chosen to step down as he wants to focus more on his new job which he will be starting soon.
Regular users and readers of our Soul Markt section will be well aware of the top job that he has done over the last four years (since March 2018).  Always acting in a most measured calm manner which given some of the heated disputes that occur is a lot harder than it sounds.
Thanks to James I 'd say the Soul Markt has grown and developed into a very much more busy, useful and worthwhile section of the site over his time.
So on behalf of the Source time, just like to wish James all the best for his new job, and say thanks for all the time and effort along with a personal 'good luck' with the new job
All the best James

New 45 - The Mansion - Soul Junction Records

Details of the next Soul Junction 45 release are out, available in just under 2 weeks
Release Date:   Monday 7th November 2022
Artist Bio:
The Mansion were initially a prison group formed by Charles Lorenzo Blakely in 1970 while serving time in the Green Bay Reformatory at Allouez, Wisconsin.  The Mansion’s line up included at different times Michael Locke, Stanley Newburn, Carl Anderson, John Crawford, Michael Smith, Larry Moses, Ronald Hardin, Jerome Wagner, Larry Lister, Maurice Payne and Charles himself. Let Your Heart Be Your Guide” for a local Milwaukee label Gibbs (406). The label’s owner Bill Gibbs held the release back until some of the members of the Mansion were granted their release papers as at that time prisoners were unable to sign any contract agreements while still incarcerated. Although Charles Blakely remained incarcerated, he was later moved to a medium security prison in Fox Lake County, Wisconsin. While there he formed a gospel group, called the ‘Bell Tones’ who’s line up included Charles, Mayweather Lee, Joe Hayes, and Levell Rudd. The formation of this group was seen as major factor in Charles’s rehabilitation which led to his eventual parole in 1976.
Once on the outside Charles with former ‘Bell Tone” member Mayweather Lee were joined by Charles (Sonny) Bryant and Jimmy Taylor to form a new ensemble by the name of The “Final Chapter”.  As the final Chapter they recorded a solitary release for Marvel Love’s New World Label “Now I Know/Get Down For Your Action” (NW800) during 1980, a brief association that for several reasons was to eventually brake down. Although Jimmy Taylor left to pursue a career as a blues musician the remaining three members of the ‘Final Chapter’ continued to perform until they finally disbanded in 1987.
Three previously unissued Final Chapter songs can be found on Soul Junction Various Artists CD compilation “We Got A Sweet Thing going On” Volume II. The Mansion’s Gibbs 45 is now is a highly prized and sort after item amongst Sweet and Group Soul collectors.

Big AC Records Soul Revue with Carmy Love, Abi Farrell, Emma Noble, Nick Corbin and special guests!

We are delighted to announce that we have some very special guests joining us at The 100 Club on Thu 24 Nov at our Big AC Records Soul Revue Show with Carmy Love, Abi Farrell, Emma Noble and Nick Corbin.

First up is the “King of North London Soul”, Danny Toeman! After a 2022 that has seen him sharing the stage with Diana Ross, releasing acclaimed singles on LRK Records and achieving BBC Radio 2 support from Craig Charles, this guy is one to watch for sure!
Next up, we also welcome the extremely talented singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Kitty Liv! Kitty has fired up music lovers around the globe from a very early age, co-fronting family band ‘Kitty, Daisy & Lewis’ and now making waves with her solo music too.

And if that wasn’t enough…  there will also be a very special one-off live performance of 'So Pure' from PHONO 48. A lot of our followers will be familiar with the single and film which we worked on with Dean Chalkley earlier this year, so we are really excited to bring this unique performance to the stage too! Phono 48 includes vocalist Laville, Kitty Liv, Nick Corbin, Solomon Douglas, Amane Suganami and Lewis Durham.

Tickets are nearly sold out but some are still available here:

BBC Archive Mod Revival 1979 News Report

A msm view of the 'mod' revival back in 1979 from the BBC Archive

James Hogg reports on the mod revival currently taking place in London. He interviews Ian Page - the vocalist with the new mod group Secret Affair - and John Entwistle of mod's elder statesmen The Who. Is the mod rebirth just a flash-in-the-pan, motivated by money, or is there more to it than that? The whole affair is regarded with some amusement in Yorkshire, where the mod scene never really went away, and where there are still several thriving scooter clubs. What do these veteran mods make of what is happening down in London?

Originally broadcast 13 September, 1979.

New Retro Soul 45 by Claire Davis - Long Gone - LRK RECORDS (LRK-17) - Pre-Order Now

After the success of 'Thrive ' & 'Playground" LRK are excited to be able to share with you a brand new 45 by Claire Davis.
https://lrkrecords.bandcamp.com/album/long-gone-2
A jewel of Canada’s Soul scene, Claire Davis takes it up a notch and showcases her mighty vocals on the fiery breakup single “Long Gone”. Drawing from her influences of the likes of Etta James and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, the unrelenting rhythm and sassy background vocals of this track complement the “take-no-mess” message of Davis’ lyrics and vocal delivery. A song about knowing your worth and walking away from those who don’t! Claire Davis is an analog enthusiast, opting to record to tape whenever possible to best capture the feel and energy of a live performance and this single does not disappoint. The track was co-written by Toronto based artist Kyla Charter and producer Scott McCannell whom Davis has excitedly collaborated with for years on various other projects in Toronto’s R&B/Soul scene. The saucy background vocal arrangement from composer/arranger La-Nai Gabriel provided the icing on the cake for this record which features dynamic background vocals from Aphrose, Tegan Michelle Gordon, and Chynna Lewis.

Available on 7” Vinyl on Wednesday November 30th, 2022
Pre-Order from Friday October 14th, 2022 via LRK Records
The flip side to be announced early Nov

Long Gone by Claire Davis
Claire Davis is a musical time traveller. Known for her mighty and expressive vocals, Davis authentically and effortlessly brought the sounds of ‘60s and ‘70s soul into the present on her debut solo EP Thrive. Recording the EP to tape, Davis stayed true to the golden years of soul music that inspire her most, “I wanted to have the flavour of some of my favourite soul records while also being unique compositionally.” Davis explains, “Using an analog process is all about capturing the vibe of a performance, it’s a practice in giving up the idea of perfection and tapping into the moment when you’re recording.” Carving out her reputation as a powerhouse frontwoman and background vocalist in the Toronto music scene, Davis joined seven-piece retro funk ensemble YUKA as their lead singer on full-length album releases From the Ancients (2014) and Dreamscape (2019) to critical acclaim.
Regarded as one of the best live acts coming out of Toronto, YUKA shared the stage with The Dap-Kings, Lee Fields and the Expressions, Treme Brass Band, and The Souljazz Orchestra. Davis also established herself as a go-to background vocalist for all things soul, performing with
legends Martha Reeves (of Martha & the Vandellas), Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, and Jully Black, top Toronto breakout artists Charlotte Day Wilson, Jessie Reyez, and Daniel Caesar.
Stepping out on her own as a solo artist, Davis teamed up with producer and YUKA bandmate Scott McCannelll to write and record her debut EP, Thrive. An EP that explores themes of relationships and heartbreak, the title track centres on the relationship we have with ourselves -- the relationship that all else is built upon, “We blossom the most when we love and take care of ourselves first. It’s the only thing we can truly control.” says Claire of the track. Thrive was released digitally on July 16, 2021 and was followed up with a 7” vinyl release on UK label LRK
Records which sold out presales in just over a day.

Lee Fields: Faithful Man Documentary
WORLD PREMIERE
Dir. Jessamyn Ansary and Joyce Mishaan, 2022, USA, 80 min

His voice has been compared to James Brown, but Lee Fields is no knock-off. He’s the real thing. Listening to the soul sounds coming through his transistor radio in the late fifties and early sixties, Lee was hooked. Through the seventies, he made his living touring the legendary Chitlin’ Circuit alongside some of the greatest names in blues and soul history. He landed a gig with Kool and the Gang before their rise to fame. But, as the seventies came to a close, disco began its reign and Lee's soul career plummeted. For decades, he thought his music dreams were dead. But with one phone call, everything changed...
Event supported by the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery.

Spooner Oldham produced six recordings by Barbara Lynn for Atlantic in mid-1968, but session information had previously been scant. Spooner recently confirmed that these tracks were "recorded at American in Memphis" and when the late Red Kelly (Soul Detective) digitised guitarist Reggie Young's session diaries, his endeavours presented further clarity.
Reggie's 1968 diary indicates two American sessions on June 14th and 15th. Four songs were recorded, with "Unloved, Unwanted Me" being shelved. No songwriting credit was documented, but its sorrowful yearning is perfectly executed by Barbara.
A third session the following month yielded two more songs, including the first known recording of "Soul Deep" (its writer Wayne Carson and The Box Tops each recorded the song in 1969). Reggie's diary documents a fortnight's holiday in July, but the distinct lack of guitar and the audible presence of other American Studio musicians further suggests Barbara Lynn's version was possibly recorded in Memphis too.
Both songs make their 7" vinyl debut here. Enjoy!

𝙈𝘼𝙍𝙔 𝙒𝙀𝙇𝙇𝙎 - 𝙇𝙊𝙑𝙀 𝙇𝙀𝙏𝙏𝙀𝙍𝙎 / 𝙃𝘼𝙉𝘿𝙎 𝙊𝙁𝙁 𝙈𝙔 𝘽𝘼𝘽𝙔 (𝙎4𝙍24)

It was not until early 1965 that Mary Wells officially left Motown. After a brief stay at 20th Century Fox, she signed for the Atlantic subsidiary Atco Records, and was placed in the very capable hands of Gerald Sims and Carl Davis.
Some tapes of unissued material from this period have been unearthed over the years, and here for the first time on vinyl we have two real delights.
First up is the blatantly Chicago-esque lilting and catchy "Love Letters". Gerald Sims appears to have seen the potential in letter writing as a vehicle for Mary’s talent, and just as with "Dear Lover" it works perfectly. With an introduction that may well have provided the template for that of The Soul Brothers Six, "I’ll Be Loving You", Mary drifts effortlessly through a magical Carl Davis midtempo production.
On the other side, "Hands Off My Baby" is far more reminiscent of her earlier Detroit days, which is unsurprising coming from the pens of Richard Popcorn Wylie and Tony Hester.

Epsilon Record Co. 2022
Background:
I met Kenneth Henderson and Alfonso Jones almost two years ago after searching for these guys for many years.
I proudly re-released two remastered version of I'm Gonna Get Ya on Epsilon EPS003 on February 28, 2021.
I have built a real friendship with these two fantastic guys and musicians.
It was Alfie & Ken's dream to one day be able to get back in the studio and record more music and who knows one day get back on stage together.
So I decided to make it happen and financed the whole project.
I booked M.V.P studio (owned by my good friend El Willie aka William Travis from Nobody's Children) in West Palm Beach FL, who organised the entire session and booked studio musicians for this project.
Alfie headed to Jacksonville FL to meet Ken for a week of rehearsal and lots of brandy. They travelled to meet El Willie for a one day session and recorded these two amazing tracks.
Now their success is in your hands
Please show your appreciation and support their brand new music

New Ace Cd - Wrap It Up - The Isaac Hayes And David Porter Songbook (Songwriter Series)

A new addition to the Ace Record's Songwriter Series of albums...
Wrap It Up - The Isaac Hayes And David Porter Songbook - Ace Cd - CDTOP 1622
Release notes clip from Tony Rounce follows
Ace are delighted to welcome them into our ever-popular Songwriter Series this month with “Wrap It Up”, a fantastic collection featuring almost half of the total number of songs they wrote together in versions you would expect, and versions you wouldn’t!
Hayes and Porter wrote for almost every major act on the Stax roster, but the commercial appeal of their songs gave them appeal to artists operating outside of the perimeters of soul music. ZZ Top, Peter Frampton, the (Count) Bishops and Charlie Rich are just some of the fine turns you will find here essaying Hayes and Porter copyrights alongside Stax stalwarts such as Johnnie Taylor, Mable John, the Emotions, the Soul Children, Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, and, of course, Sam and Dave whose recordings of their songs were what established Hayes and Porter as a peerless songwriting force in the first place.
As lovingly curated and expertly annotated as you would expect any Ace project in the Songwriter Series to be, “Wrap It Up” is another valuable piece in the great American songwriting jigsaw, and very much a collection where the songs that were not necessarily big hits are easily on a par with those that were. It is a fitting audio tribute to two men who have between them won just about every major award going, from Grammys to election to the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.

She also recorded her own classic, collectible soul records, collaborating extensively with Barry White.
