BBC: Paid in Full: The Battle for Black Music - 3 Part Docuseries

Paid in Full: The Battle for Black Music
News about a new three-part documentary series titled 'Paid in Full: The Battle for Black Music' which premieres 21 September 2024 on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer
'Paid In Full: The Battle for Black Music explores the systemic racism faced by Black artists in the music industry from its inception to the digital streaming age.'
Press notes below....
From executive producers Idris and Sabrina Elba, alongside Greg Sanderson of Supercollider and Julie Bristow of Catalyst, for national public broadcasters CBC and BBC, a new three-part documentary series Paid In Full: The Battle for Black Music explores the systemic racism faced by Black artists in the music industry from its inception to the digital streaming age.
Despite remarkable success stories, prejudicial practices persist in the machinery of the music industry, with exploitative contracts and copyright arrangements often hindering artists' autonomy and financial reward and coming with a devastating personal cost.
The series is narrated in Canada by music icon Jully Black and features interviews with Black titans of the music industry Cadence Weapon, Chaka Khan, George Clinton, Monie Love, Nile Rodgers, Gloria Gaynor, Ice T, Master P, and Smokey Robinson, as well as music experts and industry insiders. The series is narrated in the UK by British actress and playwright Zawe Ashton.
In Canada, all episodes of Paid In Full: The Battle for Black Music will be available to stream on CBC Gem beginning Saturday 21 September.
In the UK, the first episode will air on BBC Two on Saturday 21 September and will be available to stream as a box set on BBC iPlayer afterwards. The second and third episodes will air on Saturday 28 September.
Paid In Full: The Battle for Black Music documents the extent of the historic injustice suffered by the music industry’s Black artists, including the disparity of profits received by them, despite having created the records that have driven the fabric and culture of popular music - from jazz and rock and roll to soul and rap.
The first episode delves into the stories of trailblazing artists like Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, who used their music to challenge societal norms, and confronts the harsh realities faced by legends such as Bessie Smith, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry, who struggled for fair compensation despite their groundbreaking contributions. The second episode highlights the emergence of Black-owned labels like Motown, Stax Records, and Def Jam, which shaped the industry while facing their own challenges. Despite celebrating Black culture, these labels sometimes adopted exploitative practices reminiscent of larger, white-owned counterparts.

The Duke Of Chicago: The Duke Turner Story

The Duke Of Chicago:   The Duke Turner Story.

Willie Roy Turner was born on the 21st of February 1939 in Louisville, Mississippi, the fourth of eight children born to parents Florence and Herman Turner. It was Herman who gave his son Willie Roy the pet/nickname of ‘Duke’, which Willie used as his stage and professional name in later life. Duke is a rarity in himself, being one of only 0.2% of African-Americans to be born with blue eyes.
The Turner family migrated north to Chicago, Illinois, in 1953 settling, in the South Side of the city with Duke returning to Louisville each semester to continue his education. Duke spent the summer holidays with his family in the Windy City, taking a part-time job at the ‘Golden Rod Ice Cream Company’. Upon his eventual graduation, Duke finally made the permanent move to Chicago circa 1959 taking up full-time employment at Golden Rod as a tool and maintenance fitter.

Duke’s first foray into secular music arose when he was accompanied by Muddy Waters Band at Smitty’s Corner Club and performed an impressive recital of the 1959 Big Jay Neely standard “There’s Something On Your Mind” at an Open Mic Night sometime in 1963. Duke performed at many talent shows, often in the early hours of the morning after finishing his shift at the ice cream factory.  During one of these shows Duke met and was befriended by a fellow native Mississippian, Garland Green. Green himself was later talent spotted at the Trocadero Theater (one of Chicago’s most popular burlesque clubs of the day) by the then husband and wife team of Mel Collins and “Joshie” Jo Armstead who signed him to their Giant Enterprises production company. Through Giant Enterprises, Green released his first single, the sublime “Girl, I Love You” (also released twice by Little Jimmy Scott on Giant Enterprises) on the Detroit Gamma label which garnered enough sales in Detroit and Chicago to be picked up by MCA for release on their subsidiary label, Revue. Green’s third Revue single release, “Ain’t That Good Enough”, was composed by Jo Armstead, brothers Howard and Walter Scott and respected session drummer Ira Gates. Green would later introduce Duke Turner to the Scott Brothers.
The Scott Brothers Review (later known as The Scott Brothers World) was one of Chicago’s most respected groups and was also the house band at one of Chicago’s most renowned clubs -The Bonanza Lounge. The Scott’s also operated their own production company Capri Productions producing songs on their own labels and artists. In tandem with the Scott Brothers, Duke recorded his first 45, the upbeat funk mover “Doggie Dog World” b/w “Put Some Soul In Your Dance”. Penned by Duke and respected arranger Johnny Cameron and co-produced by Duke and Howard Scott, the songs gained a release on Don Clay’s Omega label during 1968. It was around this time that Duke married his first wife Gladys with whom he raised two children daughter Joanna and son Willie Roy Jr.

Duke’s second 45 featured the self-penned dance orientated song “Shake Your Rang-A Tang (Rang-Dang-Du)” (vocal and instrumental) and appeared on Duke’s own label-Spinning Top Records-during 1969. Credited as Duke Turner & The Gems Of Peace, the group comprised of a quartet a musicians that Duke put together specifically for the release. Featuring a bassist by the name of Cleveland Johnson, a drummer known as ‘Nuke’, and two other guys, the songs arrangements were crafted by Bill McFarland a trombonist and flute player who, as a member of the Al-Tog Staff worked closely with the Scott Brothers (McFarland now in his mid-80s still performs today with the jazz ensemble, The Chicago Horns). Duke’s next Spinning Top 45 was the soulful dancer “(Let Me Be Your) Baby Sitter” (Part 1&2) which was released during 1970. Originally recorded for release with a b-side track entitled “Friendship Or Friends”, Ed Cody-the studio engineer on the project - persuaded Duke to drop the track for use at a later date (more on this later in the article), thus the 45 was released with “Baby Sitter” parts 1 & 2. “Baby Sitter was co-written by Duke and his niece Cynthia McAfree. The 45 is credited as Duke Turner & The Chi-Towns, with the Chi-Towns being a vocal trio consisting of sisters Margie and Pat Stroud, plus a guy only remembered as Smokey. Margie Stroud also played keyboards on “Baby Sitter” and the unreleased “Friendship Or Friends”. Sidney Pinchback, who later recorded as a solo artist on Twinight records and as a member of the group South Shore Commission on Wand, provided the arrangements.

Although a brief hiatus in Duke’s recording career was to follow, he continued to perform in several notable clubs in Chicago’s South Side, including Peyton Place, High Chaparral, Club Elisa and The Bonanza Lounge. Duke’s employment at Golden Rod Ice Cream Co came to an end in 1972 when the company closed down on the day of his 33rd birthday. Within days Duke had taken up a similar position of employment at Jewel Foodstores a regional supermarket chain with outlets in the Chicago metropolitan area and other parts of the Midwest. (The company is still in operation to this day but is now called Jewel-Osco).
Duke’s next foray into the recording studio yielded the 1974 release “Give Me Some Sugar, Baby”, a song Duke wrote with respected bassist, composer and arranger Bradley Austin Bobo. Duke had been introduced to Brad Bobo through a long-time neighbourhood friend, James Stroud of the vocal group The Notations (during their Tad and Twinight period only). In fact Duke, having years earlier turned down an invitation to join The Notations as he preferred to work as a solo artist was the person responsible for recommending Stroud to the group’s founding members in place of himself.

Referring back to the group members of the ‘Chi-Towns’ the Stroud Sisters were indeed James Stroud’s daughters. Stroud had become involved with Brad Bobo during his time with The Notations, a relationship that was to continue following Stroud’s retirement from the group. Under the production stewardship of Stroud and Bobo (the arranger on the session), Duke recorded the mellifluous ballad “Give Me Some Sugar, Baby”, which he released as a vocal and instrumental on his own Spinning Top Label. Duke wasn’t going to leave any possibility of artist misidentification to chance he added his date of birth, his birth sign-Pisces and his hometown (Louisville Mississippi) to the label credits! The song also gained a second release on the Crajon label owned by Bill and Denise Jones (a.k.a Denise LaSalle). Bill Jones had befriended Duke, offering him help and advice with radio promotion of his records, hence the second release of “Give Me Some Sugar” dropped the word “Baby” from the title, and the instrumental version on the flipside was replaced with the Stroud/Bobo penned “Pusher Man (Give Me A Dime)” a superb social commentary song admirably delivered by Duke.

The two girls in the photo are The Chi-Towns, Margie & Pat Stroud
Into the 1980’s, Duke had assembled a small band that performed under the collective name of Torch. The group’s bassist, Pierre Taylor, had been responsible for introducing Duke to two 20-year -olds, keyboardist Terry Coffey and his friend, pianist and budding song writer Jon Nettlesbey. The band also included a drummer by the name of Finley. Nettlesbey and Duke struck up a great friendship with Duke mentoring the youngster in the art of songwriting. The fruits of this liaison would lead to the 1983 Duke Turner Spinning Top release “This Love Will Last”, an excellent ballad that featured a more up-to-date reworking of Duke’s earlier song “Give Me Some Sugar, Baby” under the title of “Sugar Baby Your Love”. Jon Nettlesbey and Terry Coffey would go onto great things either writing or producing many R&B/Pop hits of the 1990’s on artists such as Aaron Hall, Howard Hewett, Miki Howard, Michael Jackson, Alexander O’Neil, Teddy Pendergrass and Keith Washington amongst others. The duo hit paydirt again when, through the Creative Artists Agency, they entered the lucrative and competitive world of commercial jingles, successfully writing and producing the hit jingle “Always Coca-Cola” which was performed by Joey Diggs in 1993. The duo followed this success with the “Coca-Cola Enjoy” campaign in 1999. The aforementioned song, “Sugar Baby Your Love” was later licensed by the Chicago specialist boogie label ‘Star Creature’ and was released in 2021 as part of a four-track 12” project as an extended ‘Kool Hersh Edit’.

After leaving Jewel Foodstores Distributors in 1985 due to the closure of their dairy department, Duke entered in-to a business partnership with Fred Johnson (a former fellow performing/recording artist whom he had first met while working with the Scott Brothers Capri Productions). Duke and Fred began running their own night club, The Celebrity Lounge & Showroom where they both also performed. Duke’s repertoire included many cover versions of his favourite songs such as the old standard “You Are My Sunshine”, and Johnny Taylor’s hit “Disco Lady”, as well as often throwing in “Give Me Some Sugar, Baby” for good measure. The Celebrity Lounge closed down in 2000 with Fred Johnson having since sadly passed away. Duke’s first wife Gladys had sadly passed away in 1999. However Duke didn’t remain a widow for too long following his marriage to his second wife Donna Dawson-Turner. Duke became a father for the third time at the age of 62 when Donna gave birth to his second son, Jonathan. Following a brief flirtation with real estate Duke eventually retired, and these days his singing extends no further than his local Church.

Returning to the earlier mentioned song “Friendship Or Friends” following it’s exclusion from its intended release as the flipside to “(Let Me Be Your) Baby Sitter” back in the day the song was believed to be lost! During a conversation on social media with collector Malcolm Collins, the subject of this song was somehow raised. Might Duke Turner have a recording of the song?  Following a quick transatlantic phone call there was only bad news. With Duke having lived at several different addresses across the ensuing years, the master tapes had become mislaid and eventually lost. Ed Cody, the sound engineer on the original project, had also since passed so it appeared no sound source existed. Then providence intervened, Mal mentioned that collector Russell Gilbert a Brit living in the Netherlands, had purchased an acetate of “Baby Sitter” through e-Bay that had a cut of “Friendship Or Friends” on the flipside. When contacted, Russell was only too happy to loan us the acetate as a mastering reference. Upon receipt of the acetate, we realized in addition to the unreleased “Friendship Or Friends” the version of “Baby Sitter” was a longer and different mix to the released 45 version. After reacquainting Duke with his long-lost masters, a licensing deal was struck which will soon see the long overdue release of “Friendship or Friends” along with the alternative mix of “(Let Me Be Your) Baby Sitter” as part of a 3- track EP courtesy of Soul Junction Records that also includes the original 1974 version of “Give Me Some Sugar, Baby”, a song now finding favour with the ‘Lowrider’ scene.

Home Run Soul Club... Beer!

On April 02, 2023 I wrote an introductory piece that gave a sense of what our new club night was all about. Entitled, The Glamour of Manchester, the article sought to set the scene for what we hoped to achieve. A roadmap of sorts, it spoke to the notion that the environment you host your event in and the people who attend, are as important as the music. It’s a triangulation of sorts. To get all three right is the key!
Well, 15 months in, 5 nights in the bag (all with complimentary DJ mixes available here), we’re a matter of days off our first All-Dayer on Sept 7th. In anticipation of this we have been working in collaboration with a local brewery, Seven Brothers and Manchester based Creative-Studio, We Are Willow to create our own beer!
The 'Golden Gooden' is a Home Run Soul Club X We Are Willow colab which celebrates the 1980's baseball legend Dwight 'The Doc' Gooden in the format of a 4.8% Golden Ale.
Sound tracked by the Black Smoke Band – I’ll Keep Searching, licensed and distributed by our All-dayer guest, Yann Vastie’s own Epsilon Records, the promo video gives us all a sneak peak of the production and caning process. Wrapped in a bespoke Home Run Soul Club label, we’ll be giving 2 of these limited-edition cans to each of the first 100 guests who buy all-dayer passes, along with a sticker and limited edition ‘save the date’ flyer for our April 2025 event. Tickets are available here and only £10 for the full day, plus the goodie bag!
In addition, we’ll be screening Dean Chalkey’s Young Souls film in the basement behind the decks on the night, complimented an exhibition of his photographic work upstairs (oh and he’ll be DJing too!)
As I noted in my initial article last year, Manchester is alive with creative ideas and innovation. It is an environment that is also ripe for collaboration.  Home Run Soul Club is built on this logic.
As Manchester legend Tony Wilson (didn’t say), “We do things differently here”. Its true, we do.

Portobello Beat - Exhibition Celebrating North Kensington’s Pioneering Record Shops

Portobello Beat ((1884 to 2024))  (An Exhibition Celebrating North Kensington’s Pioneering Record Shops)
For one week only: Free Entry
6 Thorpe Close
W10 5XA
(opening hours 1st till 7th September 2024 12 till 8PM)
This exhibition covers an area focused around Portobello Road, once amongst the most important music trading hubs in London (if not the world).
Exhibition aims to celebrate the record shops that made an impact – Portobello Beat’s shops set up chains and record labels and made things happen.
It was here that Trojan Records – the label that launched Jamaican music in the UK (and beyond) – was founded via a record shop called Musicland in 1966. Musicland went on to be a London-based chain of record shops, specialising in US imports - both soul and blues and underground rock albums. The success of Musicland and its black music specialist offshoot, Muzik City, ensured that the Notting Hill/Ladbroke Grove area became a hub for record shops and labels.
Geoff Travis opened Rough Trade in the Grove in 1976 and this pioneering emporium quickly became amongst the very first punk specialist record shops – Rough Trade launched Rough Trade Records, home to the Smiths and Lankum (amongst many others). Rough Trade is now an international chain of record shops and a now separate but equally celebrated record label: both continue to trade in Ladbroke Grove.
The seeds for Ace Records, the label that gave the world both Motorhead and reissues of rare rockabilly and soul records, germinated at Rock On’s record stall in Golborne Road’s covered market. Today, Honest Jon's continues to trade as both a shop and label. For more than 50 years Music & Video Exchange has generated feelings of loathing and liking depending on how well you do on exchange (and who is serving you). Virgin Records was long based in the Grove (with one of their most popular hippie shops in Notting Hill).
Tributaries off the Portobello Road led to shops like Dub Vendor, Second Hand Music, The Calypso Shop, Plastic Passion, All Change Records and People’s Sounds. And many more!
Come along to Portobello Beat and experience the history of these streets’ record shops. And share your memories.
This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Dave Hucker, a local lad whose passion for music, record shops and Ladbroke Grove illuminated his and many others lives.
Portobello Beat is curated and sourced by the British Record Shop Archive, a hub for info’ & images on the emporiums that once stocked the music that changed your life.

HRSC 2024 DJ Dayer Profiles #2 - Phil Shields

As we continue to profile our guests at the Home Run Soul Club (more can be found HERE including Dave Ripolles, Pat Bleasdale and Chris Anderton) our aim is to build an archive of those we've had play whilst offering a little sense of who they are and what drives their passion for soul.

For our first home run Soul club birthday we've picked another great character from the scene (with a great story) and a some of the records you might hear on the day.

Phil Shields

How long have you been collecting?
I’ve always been in love with music from well, about aged 8/9. I remember my parents taking me to buy the top 30 singles of the time (oops best keep that bit quiet), then when I went to secondary school I started buying all Bowie’s LPs.

Then in around 1977 I started hanging out with my older brother going to local discos, they called them soul nights even though there was no soul in Belfast but loads of disco and a bit of jazz funk. Anyway, I loved it and after a month or so I couldn’t stay off the dance floor and certainly wasn’t easy to live with if I didn’t manage to get out 3/4 nights a week.

I was buying Black Echoes and was intrigued by the back pages, what were these records they were talking about? I didn’t know any of them. I think I was 15 when I persuaded one of my parents to write a cheque and voila my first soul pack arrived one damp grey Saturday morning and WOW, that was it for me I was hooked, late 1977 and I’ve been buying (and selling) ever since.
Do you remember your first buy?
To be honest, it’s over 45 years now so not sure. I know that first soul pack was all bootlegs and I remember Frankie & Johnny on Hickory and Johnny Bragg on Elbejay being there.

I did start buying blind from Soul Bowl, them originals that came my way in those early days included Patrice Holloway – Stolen Hours on Capital, Steve Mancha on Wheelsville and The Blue Jays on Jay, all long since sold but one bought back years later but a lot more expensive.

What’s your favourite record in your box?
This is an impossible question, it depends on so many things but here goes but I couldn’t just have one, so here’s three that have been consistently my fave 45s and ones that I’m lucky enough to own –

Johnny Gilliam – Room Full Of Tears on Cancer – Words fail me on this one, spine tingling soul of the very highest quality. I’m now on my 2nd copy after foolishly selling the 1st one

Dusty Wilson – It’s Gonna Be A Tragedy on Mutt – Heard this in the 90’s when I started collecting again, my kinda tune!

Maurice McAllister – Your Love Is Slipping Away  – Well it’s Mr. Soul – What Happened To Yesterday on Genuine. A song I had on tape for a long time, I wore that tape out finally got a copy a few years ago
Which record do you regret selling the most?
Where do I start? sold too many over the years but there are two that I really do still miss –

Soul Shakers You’re Turnin’ on Teri De
Cal Green – I’ll Give You Just A Little More Time on Filmtown
What’s your fave all time soul club?
Sorry… three again from me –

Rugby Soul Club – Just the perfect venue with a totally across the board music policy and run by two of the loveliest people… oh, and it’s two minutes from my door

Middleton All-Niter – I was very lucky to be taken under Carl Willingham’s wing, absolutely loved this guy and I was over the moon when he called me up as joint resident in his room.

And finally the amazing Belfast Soul Club – Never dreamt there would be a club in Belfast like the one me and Liam Quinn, some fantastic nights plus a couple of weekenders in the mix and the music was incredible!
What’s your all time want?
I give up on wants lists a long time ago, it would be a book by now and I’d need to win the euro millions to buy them!

👉Ticket for the next event and all other info available HERE 👈

See you all on the 7th Sept

Pre-Order: New 45 - The Ellis Hall Group - Music Sweet Music - Super Disco Edits

Following the recent release by The Ellis Hall Group via Super Disco Edits last year (a lot of positive comments on here), we now have news of the second upcoming release from this talented group. Release notes follow below...
Release Notes
Welcome to our second release by the Talented Ellis Hall Jr and his band out of Boston from 1978. The group caught our attention a few years ago when we spotted a lengthy performance they did for a show called "Night Shift". These two songs the summer "Music , Sweet Music" and "Forward Motion" didn't make that tv show reel but we dug deep to get these cuts out for you.
"Music, Sweet Music" is such a lovely summer vibe, like a mix of the Blackbyrds and Stevie Wonder all rolled into 2:38 short but Sweeeeeettttt!!
"Forward Motion" is a much more funkier vibe which almost sounds it could be a new wave funk record! Really kicks in after the opening horn bars with rasping drums and melodies.

Rare Singles Book - Kindle Preview - 'A Love Letter To Northern Soul'

Rare Singles - Benjamin Myers
'A tale of soul music and second chances'
First posted in our soul music news section back in January (tap to view) the book 'Rare Singles' by Benjamin Myers (described as  'a love letter to Northern Soul') is officially published today (1st August 2024)
The book has had many 'positive' reviews from the 'Mainstream' since then, however some of our members have already expressed 'concerns' about the 'validity' of the book and some have stated that perhaps a 'wait and see' approach before purchase may be best
As such a Kindle preview is now available below (via our built in kindle preview feature) which may be of assistance for those who are waiting to pull the trigger on a purchase, you can find it below, just tap the image of the cover for it to launch..

Book Info
Bloomsbury has acquired Rare Singles, a "full-throated hymn to the sorrows and triumphs of soul music" from author Benjamin Myers.
From the Back Cover
Dinah has always lived in Scarborough. Trapped with her feckless husband and useless son, her one release comes at her town's Northern Soul nights, where she gets to put on her best and lose herself in the classics.
Dinah has an especial hero: Bucky Bronco, who recorded a string of soul gems in the late Sixties and then vanished off the face of the earth. When she manages to contact Bucky she can't believe her luck.
Over in Chicago, Bucky Bronco is down on his luck – and has been since the loss of his beloved wife. The best he can hope for is to make ends meet, and try and stay high. But then an unexpected invitation arrives, from someone he’s never met, to come to somewhere he’s never heard of.
About the Author
Benjamin Myers was born in Durham in 1976. He is the author of ten books, including The Offing, which was an international bestseller and selected for the Radio 2 Book Club; The Gallows Pole, which won the Walter Scott Prize for historical fiction and has been adapted as a BBC series by Shane Meadows; Beastings which was awarded the Portico Prize for Literature, and Pig Iron which won the inaugural Gordon Burn Prize. Home Run Soul Club 2024 - DJ Dayer Profiles #1 Yann Vatiste.

Yann Vatiste

How long have you been collecting?
I discovered a mixture Northern Soul, R&B, Latin, Ska, Jazz, Acid Jazz & Funk music on the Mod scene in the late 80s. I slowly started collecting records around the age of 15 as I had a very good friend called Spider who was a musician with an incredible collection of French EPs and thousands of soul, r&b and jazz records.

I spent hours at his house, making tapes, taking notes and discovering black American music.
During this time we would rummage through car boot sales and charity shops mainly, back then everything cost around 5 or 10 francs (50p/£1).
Do you remember your first buy?
To be honest, I don’t know which is the first record I bought but I do remember the one that changed my life, Kent Records The Magic Touch compilation LP , I used to play this on repeat in my room whilst teaching myself how to spin and kick. I was doing martial arts at that time which helped. A hugely influential album for me which made me not only want to learn more about soul music but eventually led me to move to London after visiting the 100 club.
What’s your favourite record in your box?
It will have to be Kenyatta – Kick It Off on NGUDU which is a funk monster 45, It simply has to be this one because of the story behind it…

You can choose how you search for records and my method has always been to try to connect with the artists and musicians behind these incredible gems, so I decided to try and find the guy behind Kenyatta and soon realised I was the only one on the case.

I first established who the owner of the label was, Ngudu Chandler, a famous drummer who worked with Michael Jackson. I found his daughter and she had a copy of the 45 but cracked in two, she was shocked that anyone remembered this 45!

So I started researching for the songwriters Keith Rose and James Crabbe Robinson.
I quickly realised that these guys were from New York and not Ohio like the label suggested. Despite sending hundreds of emails, phone calls and Facebook messages I was unable to make contact, so I started contacting their friends and family. I also noticed a really cool bass player called Paris Ford who had connections with them in different bands but he almost seemed to young for it to make sense, after contacting him though Paris responding… guess what? Paris was the Kenyatta’s bass player.  I couldn’t believe my luck. Finally I was making progress!

Paris told me he had an original copy of Kick It Off but it was completely scratched and it was the only copy he had. I still tried to buy from him but I didn’t push much because it was his only copy however, we started exchanging messages daily and became very good friends.

Paris himself had a solo career and he told me he also had some unreleased material and that is how Epsilon Record Co. was born, with EPS001 Paris Ford- Boogie Down.

At the same time Paris sent me 10 unreleased Kenyatta tracks. My heart almost stopped when I first listened to these tracks, these songs are simply incredible. Check them out –

EPS005 A: Let Me Love You / B: Ain’t Doin Nothing
EPS006 A: If We Only Had / B: Didn’t I Treat You Right Girl

I remained very close to Paris after the release of these songs and I was also there to help him in his projects. When Paris realised that I also repaired records, he asked me if I wanted to try to repair his copy of Kenyatta – Kick It Off for him, I told him of course, I would do it for free and a week later I received his original copy. It repaired perfectly and sent it back to New York, Paris was really happy with the result and I was really proud to have a copy in my hands for a few days.

Then out of the blue, several weeks later. I received a package from the USA with the name Paris on it. I was really surprised and didn’t know what to expect. To my surprise it was the same copy of Kick It Off that I was working on, Paris kindly decided to offer it to me and it was an incredible surprise.

So how can it not be my favourite record, it’s not only an amazing record but one that has a special story behind it with a beautiful ending.

I still have some superb unreleased material from Kenyatta, Paris and I will publish them one day for sure… watch this space!
Which record do you regret selling the most?
I don’t think I regret any particular record. I also sell records to improve my record collection. Buying/selling and trading are part of our record collecting journey. I think today everyone is too obsessed with the value of their collection. I love music, collecting and digging new sounds and master tapes and I always look forward, not back continuing to learn every day.
What’s your fave all time soul club?
Easy… the 100 club in London without any hesitation. The best club in the world with the mighty Butch!
What’s your all time want?
As a Shrine Records collector, it will have to be The Prophets – If I Had One Gold Piece.

I would also love to own Patrinell Staten – Little Love Affair on Sepia.

New 45 - Prime cut - I Don't wanna be without you / Angel - Epsilon Record Co

PRIME CUT I DON'T WANNA BE WITHOUT YOU / ANGEL EPSILON RECORD CO EPS031
(release date 26th of July 2024)
PRIME CUT
A Side:
I DON'T WANNA BE WITHOUT YOU (previously unissued)
B Side:
ANGEL (previously unissued)

I am very exciting to introduce EPSILON RECORD CO latest release EPS031
Prime Cut
Two fantastic and previously unissued tracks, perfect for the summer vibes.
In 2021, I was working on the T.A.X.I.E project with my good friend, the very talented Steve Fuji from Riverside CA, who later became Epsilon Record Co’s favourite sound engineer.
Back in the 70’s, Steve Fuji worked as sounds engineer for several major studios in the Los Angeles area.
He also made some appearances as an actor in a few movies and pursued his career as a solo artist, singing and playing guitar.
He worked on hundred of recording sessions with many bands.
Steve has always had a good ear for soul music artists.
He made mastertape copies of his favourite recordings for himself which he kept securely for five decades.
Four years ago I asked Steve if he had any interesting unissued material for Epsilon.
He sent me these two tracks from Prime Cut.
I was blown away by the quality of these recordings, both songs were originally about 6 minutes long.
But I knew Steve could easily edit them for me.
I started researching about Prime Cut Band and quickly realised that most of the members of the band were sadly no longer with us and put those projects aside hoping that one day I could find one of the remaining members.
The original members were:
James David Cobbin
Steve Richards
Ronald Murray
Jerome Wilson
Fleming Williams
James, Jerome & Fleming were from Flint Michigan and were the original members of the 21st Generation.
They recorded ”I Need Love" / "Hey James" released in 1970 on the Tri-City label.
They moved in the mid-70s to Los Angeles and formed a new band called Prime Cut. They hired Steve Richards who later on became a permanent member of the band and was also a songwriter.
A few months ago, I saw a post from Si Murray mentioning a Prime Cut song in the Modern Soul forum on facebook. James Cobbin & Prime Cut – Caught In The Middle [Tuckwood Record] from1984.
This reminds me these two unissued songs that Steve Fuji gave me as a gift and I decided to upload on Facebook a short clip of I DON”T WANT TO BE WITHOUT YOU which is a much more early recording from 1978 by Prime Cut.
The response to my thread was amazing and many people suggested I should release it on Epsilon.
I had to think about it again, and in less than a week I managed to track down Steve Richards, one of the original members and actually co-writer of both sides of this new single.
Deal done and authorisation agreed, Steve kindly remastered both songs for the release of EPS031.
I hope you will enjoy these two amazing previously unissued tunes as much as I do!
I dedicate this project to all the members of Modern Soul forum. You wanted the songs to be released, now I need your support.
Best
Yann Vatiste

During the years I worked as a recording engineer, it was a constant source of frustration that most of the work I did was for demo sessions that never got heard by the public.
That was especially true of these 2 songs by Prime Cut, because I felt that they were extremely good songs and also represented some of my best work as a recording engineer.
It's very gratifying that now, after 45 years, they are finally being released and can be heard by music lovers. I hope you like these songs as much as I did when I recorded them in 1978.
