Aberdeen Events

Hello fellow soul searchers.
First Soul night this year is our 2nd anniversary in the Belmot club..For this reason we have an all Aberdeen DJ line up for that night.

Early doors fall to Steve "cobblers"Riddell as per usual then.

Followed by Alan "soft lemons" Paterson.(personal joke)

Then the DYNAMIC DUO..Fatman and Dobbin(me and Tubbs). The Dobbin name has nothing to do with Tubbs being hung like a horse.HONEST..more like a Shetland pony.Playing any old pish that takes our fancy which we are allowed as the RESIDENT DJ,s..Any complaints please submit them to me in writing and you will be told to F**K off accordingly..

The first 50 people in will recieve a special gift of a Anniversary beermat/CD ( both the same )
It keeps getting better so mark up those calendars.
Below are the Aberdeen northern soul club dates for the year commencing 2002.

Soul Source - The News

Soul Source - Policy

Yet again we publish some news that we think will be of interest to soul fans, in this case the sacking of a dj. Yet again we have hysteric reaction from a certain person and his followers claiming conspiracies, campaigns, false postings and so on All we do is try and let you know whats happening, and that is what we will continue to do, the attempts by others to influence this site with their threats will just give us more determination to let you know what is going on

End of day we will continue posting all news. Well every time we publish true accounts of going ons concerning levine, its the same old game, hysteria and lies to undermine the fact that it is true. Lies this time were as follows Claims all postings were by myself and someone else - well the system records each IP of every post on this site. If need be we can prove that comments are genuine. Moderation - a certain Neil Page is claiming comments that all pro -levine statements were modedrated with a minus 1 rating.- Please note as said on intro ALL abusive posts, were given this rating, as they could not be deleted without the whole thread being removed. Instead they were moderated . Anyone can see and check this in 5 seconds, however Neil Page it seems is just another one to add to the list of those who just dont care about the truth. Site Operation - This site is run by one person, and thats me - mike h. Attempts to make out others are involved are false. Majority of stuff is knocked out by myself and hence if have a problem with any of it contact me, not try and make out it is a global conspiracy

jazz fm - advert hell

Original post edited
Will just say those 12 + adverts featured on Jazz FM cellar of soul were... ...sheer hell. First time quite funny listening to a certain persons claims, but that very quickly wore off as they continued repeating them through the show.

Jazz FM today - These Old Shoes Crew On Air

Well todays show was a good one. Richard Searlings show featured the crew from Londons biggest little soul club These Old Shoes. The radio stars were Jo Wallace, Paul Thomas Peter and Martin Thomason. And what a great show they gave us, a classy varied mix of some great soul tunes, covering all aspects and styles. With worthwhile background info and a fair few laughs.
Of course Jo W was very retiring and in the background for the m... in your dreams! Reckon by the end of the show she had reorganised the whole studio, was telling Richard S what to do and how to do it at the same time phoning Kev Roberts up to go for pizza. Ok maybe not, but thewhole crew come over good and as said well enjoyable and worthy tune selections.
Nice one Shoes people, well enjoyable show - be looking at uploading some clips soon

Shirleys review of The Pavilion, Huddersfield Jan 12th 2002

PAVILION, HUDDERSFIELD, SATURDAY JANUARY 12 2002
By Shirley Stewart
This is a slightly biased review as this venue is run by my better half, Colin Wood, with the help of the other resident DJs, John Purvis and Eddie Engel.
The venue has been running since last May every second Friday of every second month. Previous attendance’s had been disappointing so after the October date we decided to change the soul nite to a Saturday for 2002. Whether a Friday night had been the reason for previous low numbers or word had spread about the sort of soul nite we were aiming for I’m not sure, but Saturday night was definitely our best night to date, both for the numbers through the door and the class of music played. Soulies came from far and wide and were not disappointed with the records that the DJs spun – although the dance floor was hard work so there was not quite as much action on it as many of us dancers would have liked, anyone who knows me knows that I just lurve to dance. Still the toons given long overdue airings more than made up for the shin killing dance floor.
The guest DJs were Alex Jones who has a superb record collection (if you ever get chance to hear him DJ you’ve just got to make the trip) and “Toddy Tim” Brown, whose reputation precedes him. Tim, along with others, turned up around midnight after DJing at John and Janet Hillel’s wedding (congratulations you two by the way – sorry we missed your special day). Col had been starting to pace the floor a little as panic began to set in when the midnight hour loomed and still no sign of Tim, as some of those attending had come along to hear Tim’s set and Col was beginning to think John & Janet had maybe kidnapped him or his records ………….. hmmm what would I do, kidnap Tim or kidnap his records?
Anyway we were all treated to a wicked night full of spanking music and a huge thank you to all the DJs and punters alike. I hope you enjoyed yourselves I know I did!!!!
Anyway these are a selection of tunes played, I hope I’ve credited the records to the appropriate DJs but if I’ve boobed in any way I’ll apologise now

URGENT - TV Program

I got this email today... all you fine girls and boys need to contact this Lady... ..
i really liked your site and would love to talk to you about the Northern scene. Were making a series for Channel 4 about UK soul and one of the programmes is focused on Northern Soul in the 70s and the its heyday at the Wigan Casino. We are particularly looking for great women to talk to so I wonder if you were Wigan regulars or if not perhaps you know other women who would be willing to help us with our research. Were keen to talk to soul boys too - so if you know any lively blokes who were around back in the day - please put me in touch with them too! As usual with telly were strapped for time so please get back in touch if you can.
Good luck with the site and season greetings. Very best wishes

Xmas At The CSC Dome - View From The Floor

A great view from the floor Intown Mikey
Capitol Xmas Bash 14/12/01
How many Northern Soul fans does it take to change a light bulb? Two !
One to change it, the other to say it isnt as good as the original. An old joke, I know. But it does make the point that sometimes we dont appreciate what we have in our hands.
The C.S.C. has come in for its fair share of criticism in 2001. Thats inevitable I suppose, after the unqualified success of the previous 30 months or so, that sooner or later some people would start to have their twopenneth.
So, here we are freezing our "Stoke Kings Halls" off, in the Dome North London. We need warming up good and proper. Step forward Mark George, fellow Gloucestershire exile. We grew up at the same clubs, so it was inevitable I would love every track in his set. I did. But the following view was passed to me: "He played some absolute top Stafford tunes, some Id even forgotten about." Sums it up perfectly. A well thought-out set that would appeal to Dome regulars and anyone whod climbed the steps to the Top of the World.
Next Alan H and "Santas Little Leprechaun" Greg took to the decks, and between them played just about every tune that has kept the dancefloor buzzing since the early days in Shoreditch. Tonights crowd was a little lower than usual, no doubt due to the time of year, but soon you were trying to inch politely past dancers, trying to find a few spare feet of dancing space.
Keeping the Gloucestershire connection going, Dave Flynn took over. With some of the other djs opting to double up on the decks, Flynny decided he wanted to play with himself!! And what a spectacle it was. Now sweat (I did say sweat) stuck to the walls where only a few hours earlier icicles resided. I dont like picking out tracks, but Dave as usual played a great set of imaginative oldies, Dome Faves and some exclusive "one offs" like the incredible: September Jones - "Give me all your love" (Unissued Pied Piper).
Flynny is responsible for me nearly losing my seat, because I didnt return to it for so long someone thought I had gone home. Not a chance. The party was in full flow, and next up was, Capitol regular Carl and one of the London crowds favourite spinners Shifty. With London having had soul night every day this week, it already had the feel of Sunday night at Cleethorpes.
So with Carls enthusiastic intros and Shifty verbal ramraids, "You havent got this one in Australia", the Dome was taken to another level. With Ady C dancing, all it needed was someone to stick on "Interplay" and say "This one goes out to Trickster, its his favourite record", and I would have been signing the police statement confirming I had spent the evening at the Beachcomber. The rest of the night was a blur. The Antellects, The Jokers, TC Lee, Younghearts, Tommy Ridgley etc, I could go on but you get the picture.
I had the best time. Some people would disagree. Thats fine.  We all have our own ideas on what makes our favourite soul night. But for me Capitol is one of the best soul nights I have been lucky enough to visit over the last 25+ years. Its one of those I do my damndest not to miss.
Even booking holidays 1 week earlier or later, so as not to miss one. And, just like the entry stamp you get on the back of your hand, these Capitol boys are gonna stick around for a long, long time.
Mikey.

Friday 14 Dec 01 - CSC Dome Xmas Event Playlists

Two weeks after the annivesary and its back again, the gods of rare soul must have been in a top mood, giving you two domes in such a short time. Though local events meant no show for me. Sounds like it was a good one with special guest Shifty throwing out some top drawer tunes. And regulars Irish Greg, David F, Carl and Alan keeping it real with quality sounds to kill for and Mark George delivering a quality early door set.

SCENESVILLE - New Venue -

Heres some good news!!
SCENESVILLE
have announced details of their new venue.  The club, who had their
final event at Notre Dame on December 7th, have had to move from
the Leicester Square venue to make way for the venues conversion to a
theatre.
The next Scenesville Rare 60s Soul night will be held at The
Camden Centre, an eye-popping Grade II listed 1930s opera hall that has
been converted into a ballroom and is conveniently situated exactly opposite
St Pancras Station on the Euston Road, a minutes walk from Kings Cross
train and underground stations and four minutes from Euston.  With easy
parking close by, superb acoustics, a whopping 8K sound system and a late
bar, all the ingredients are there for a cracking night of 60s Rare and
Northern Soul. Top that off with all the classic Scenesville sounds plus
guest spots by Guy Hennigan and Dave Rimmer and its looking like another
cant-miss night for 2002.

SCENESVILLE

Weekend - Going Ons Oct 2001 - events and more

Weekend Going Ons
A fair few events happened and heres a brief run down of some of them, dont forget if want to pass on to rest of world what your event was just hit that submit button and let them know!!

Notre Dame - Friday

Heard it was a packer with a great atmosphere, and great sounds. As you may have read it was the last current one there due to the venue being converted into a theatre.Which is a great shame, as to me it was one of the leading uk soul nites, and definitely a unique venue. Lets face it anywhere which has such a strong regular dj line up and regular top drawer guests is going to be severley missed. The promoters are looking at new venues, hopefully news will arrive soon.

Big thanks go out to promoters, regular djs and all the guest djs - Nick and Dawn Brown, Andy Rix, Chris Dale and all for giving uk soul fans great quality rare soul nites at this great venue over the last 18 months

Prestwich - Friday

Heard it was a packer, with Tim Brown getting the thumbs up from mate as the spot he most enjoyed, said a great set. Reckons overall the nite on the main floor was mostly mix of current and revivals, with Ginger Taylor giving a great mixed set, he tried to check out the modern room but says as so popular and thus packed it was operating a one in one out policy.

Bangor - Friday

A local soul nite at the Bangor City Social Club up here in North Wales. Had a most enjoyable nite, a great range of quality sounds from all djs, current floorpackers, upfront r+b, top 70s, classy revivals , popular oldies. Something for everyone - being an apt phase. Guest Djs inc Mark Mac, Mark Morgan, Bob Schaffer. Round about 120 + in, if you in North Wales area next one is Friday Jan 05 more details soon

100 Club Saturday

Thanks to Nick who passed on a quick few words to let you know that ....yes it was another great nite at the 100 club!

100 was bloody busy, expecting the usual pre Christmas quiet night, so was
really surprised, good to see soul fans from Pisa, Italy over for the night. Good spots from
Ginger, only heard one spot from Arthur Fenn (he had Soul Sam carry his boxes!!!) started off with a couple of sixties then went into some nice xover, the ole shoes pair played some real nice bits Ady with his usual top drawer bits. A really good night, dance floor kicking all night,
went mental when Ginger (?) played the Helen Troy thing, ace night, always
enjoy it more when you're expecting just a bit of socialising and it turns
into one of those "everybodys up for it nights" Great.

Jazz Fm - Sunday

Well managed to catch it this week, and has a most enjoyable time listening to it, Tim Brown was the guest this week and him and Richard S delivered a thoroughly good show, loads of unissues, rarities, as you may imagine and usual high standard of information.

Few odds snips of news below

Big laughs at Gingers delayed request, with a request for "you hit me where it
hurts" and a message for his sparring partner Tim Brown to watch out for
those vandals. (just a wild guess but think this may have something to do with someones recent antics at a weekender ;) )

Guest on Boxing Day is Shifty so write that in diary

Goldmine CD - Niter 3 out in Feb covering the "Now" Northern Scene

Carla Whitney - Albert Jones rare Canadian lps are out on one single GM cd out this week

Next weeks guest Derek Pearson, so definitely sack Christmas shopping on that day

Next Rare Soul Review out in Jan

Audio of above to follow hopefully!

Review- Top Nite - Dome CSC 2nd Annivesary

From Dave Mo a few words on the weekend. Who later added the words "BTW it was just like my 1st allnighter at Wigan or my 1st visit to The Mecca"

Posted earlier on Soul-Talk - The Only List for Real Northern Soul Info and News!

I would just like to say a massive thank you to Matt, all the djs and everyone who was there on Friday night for one of the most enjoyable nights Ive had in many years. The atmosphere and the sounds were brilliant.
Myself and my mate Jason travelled up from Bournemouth on Friday and after finding a parking spot hit The Boston Arms for a couple of well earned pints after fighting our way thru the traffic where we met Steve Csordas and Carol plus his mate Molly.
I dont know why its taken us 2yrs to get up to The Dome but well definitley be back in the new year and hopefully with a few more soulies from the Bournemouth area in tow.
Thanks for the tape its the dogs proverbials and was on the tape deck in the car all the way home later that night.
Once again many thanks to all the djs for a brilliant night.

Review Top Nite - George Hotel at Macclesfield

Well mentioned it earlier and here's a more detailed view
Big thanks to Shirley for a well "spanking" account
Posted earlier on Soul-Talk - The Only List for Real Northern Soul Info and News!
Friday 30 Nov - Im sorry this is a long one, some of the tracks played are listed at the end of the report This has got to have been the best soul nite (musically speaking)I have attended to date, the music was just spanking!!! (thats my latest word to describe anything that is just too good to be described any other way)
This was our first trip to the venue with the usual posse of John, Dawn, Colin & myself; we arrived around 10ish, we had tried to get there earlier, but John did the now accustomed tour of the surronding area - although this time we did spot the venue before motoring off up the road in completely the wrong direction on a one way system - not quite lost this time, but we still got to hear Johns latest profanities as we tried to make our way back; our journeys to venues are not complete without this little ritual 😉
Anyway we finally arrived and in we go chomping at the bit, times a wasting, Its quite a small, intimate cellar bar venue (my favourite sort) not dissimilar to the Beehive at Bradford, the boys headed straight to the bar for refreshments whilst Dawn & I looked for seating, we found somewhere and I did my usual dumping of bags and coats and made my way to the dancefloor.
From there on in it was sheer heaven, we knew it was going to be as the guest DJs were Andy Rix and Rob Thomas, unfortunately as we had arrived later than planned we missed most of the local jocks / collectors sets, but the bit I did catch was a good start. I finally got to meet Andy Rix - at previous venues where he has been DJing I always seemed to miss having a quick chat, Ive even been mis-directed by "well meaning" friends and spoken to some poor unsuspecting bloke whos only crime was to have a passing resemblance to the description of Andy I had been given - well Andy now Ive finally met you I would just like to say that I didnt think your ears were that big 😉 - so much for "well meaning" friends!!
All the DJs, but especially Andy & Rob played some good, good toons, the dancefloor was full all night, but there was still room for a stunt dancer to knock Dawn over (lucky that table was there to break your fall Dawn, otherwise all the chin rubbers & anoraks in the corner behind you would have gone over like a set of dominos ;-)) The stunt dancer probably had to attend the nearest hospital A&E on his way home as he managed to fall over no less than four times throughout the evening, each fall being more spectacular than the previous one. I think it was a combination of the booze in him and the condensation on the floor which had turned the whole cellar bar into a pseudo ice-skating rink.
Anyway thanks to all punters & DJs alike for a spanking evening I don't think I could have attended anywhere in the UK this weekend and heard better tunes and had a better night:-o
Here's a short list of some of the records played, in no particular order, throughout the evening (sorry theres no credits to particular
DJs I'm afraid you'll have to work out who might have played what):
Jessie James - Love is alright
Willie & the Magnificents - Check it baby
Johnny & the Weirdest - Cant get over these memories
Imperial Challengers - Somebody tell her
Herman Hitson - love slipped through my fingers
Jimmy Radcliffe - thrill of loving you
Kim Weston - Im still loving you
Cindy Scott - In one ear and out the other
Wallie Hawkins & Rose McCoy - switch around
Scott English - you made a man out of me
Blue Notes - rags to riches
Chris Bartley - out of my mind
Kenny Shepherd - What difference does it make
............the list just goes on and on with mouth watering, toe tapping goodies so I'll leave it at that except to add Rob Thomas played a great male vocal c/up that was totally new to me.
Also a special mention about Ross, (Greatstone Hotel Promoter and totally great guy) who sadly died last week - he'll be greatly missed - the whole evening was a fitting send off for another soul hero who has left us.

Final Nite At Notre Dame

Friday 7th December sees Scenesvilles final date at Notre Dame, as the venue will be converting to a theatre in January in order to put on a musical about the life and times of Boy George! The organisers are currently working hard to find an alternative venue, but in the meantime, this is your last chance to dance to Rare 60s Soul on that famous Notre Dame dancefloor, so make sure you get yourselves down there on the 7th to be in on the send-off party of the year!

For more details see www.scenesville.com. If you need memberships, just e-mail driveller@supanet.com with your name and address, or register via the website.

Dome Second Annivesary - Last Nite

Word on last nite at the Dome was that it was a packer, with one of the longest queues, normal quality great sounds, great atmosphere, described in the words of one as the nite was "well mental". A right old celebration of 2 great years

Have a brief view on the nite by Mike Hump. Plus story about a guy who must live on another planet
Dome 2nd Anniversary - Friday 2nd December 2001

A great deal has been said about the Dome since it opened 2 years ago in North London. Strangely there seemed to be less anticipation about this one than of late. Can't understand why there was the usual excellent home team line up with Guest DJ - Kenny Burrell. Perhaps the southern scene is suffering from excellence fatigue and is starting to take its three top nites (100 club, Scenesville and CSC) plus the many smaller events and warmers for granted. There seemed to be more chat in the week before about who would be let in (or not).
For once I was early and was in the pub by 8.30, there was already a gaggle of soulies inside and the atmosphere soon warmed up. The first 50 through the door got a free tape - regretfully I was well to the back and missed out. But everyone was given a 2nd anniversary badge - nice one to match the first.
Musically a top nite, I was feeling a bit rough with a cold and intended to leave early but after a gradual build up I stayed till the end.
Kenny Burrell did a top mixed set, stand out for the crowd was "Wake up to the sunshine girl" which got the biggest applause of the night. Of course the floor was rammed to "that" record which also got a big cheer. The crowd doesn't forget their roots.
What stood out for me was the consistent high quality of the sounds through the night. Also a particular pleasure for me was the top line R&B mix especially the last hour and a half. The night finished off with a few oldies leaving the crowd wanting more and me pleased that I didn't bunk off early.
Dance floor was busy all evening, very few gaps - a further tribute to the DJ's. At the end the crowd wanted more and things only stopped when the managers took the cartridge off the decks.
I think it was a first for me 1st time in two years of London events when I didn't hear "Voodoo Working" or maybe I just missed it.
One or two moments that stuck out on the social side, Matt Jahans telling everyone that he was pissed - yeah, and his point was? Also, Steve Heinsen selling videotapes of the Dome "Sidney Barnes" 30th March nite. Good footage of the place, dancers and interviews by Winston of the DJ's: A snip at £8, watched it today - excellent value. Even better Steve sold one to Matt - what a salesman. If you want one you can mail Steve on sheinsen@aol.com.
Written By Mike Hump
Thanks as always to soul fans who take the time to pass on rest of us what went on

--------------------------------------------------------------
Heard a story about a guy who needs to get himself on a "living in the real world" course as soon as possible!

Imagine that you were involved with a new soul event.
You plan it to run the day after the next CSC Dome event, not only that you plan it to run it in the same area, not only that but you plan to run it clashing with every CSC Dome for the whole bloody year!!

With me so far, now also throw in the fact that you never once bothered to liase with any of the CSC to try and work out dates when setting up your event, and well gotta say that you dont sound either very clever or very friendly at all.

Ok so just imagine you did the above, would you then turn up at the Dome and start flyering your new event without asking promoter or ought , you know the one that has been set up to clash in the same area, on the same weekend for the whole year!
And if you did how long do you think you get away with it

Well Kevin, you might be naive or just stupid, but when reading your moaning about it today thought, what planet are you living on. Did you honestly think it was a good idea trying to advertise in a nite that your new event has been set up to clash with??

Of course some may say it was a cynical PR stunt, from your mentors dirty tricks book. Nah never....

Last Weekend Occurrences - Winsford Soul Allnigher

Weekend was a good one, few words on some of the events that went on...
Heres some of the things that went on
Been told the Bury soul nite on Friday was well packed, full dancefloor all nite, music mainly oldies style, with Ginger mixing in a fair few current sounds. Also Dave Evison and his son Joshua? 13 years old (?) in action
Attendence of 1000+ there quoted, one mate says was a really good night with great atmosphere, and a great mix of sounds, only time floor wasnt full was when a couple of dodgy wigan "classics" were played. Plus heard that some DJs were having a great time with some great one-liners
Saturday
King Georges Blackburn was on, heard from one guy who went, that he didnt enjoy it, too many beer monsters in attendance meaning a soggy dancefloor
Winsford Niter Saturday
A most enjoyable nite, wasnt a packer but not sparse either. Top tip - turned up early to grab few beers, but the pub across carpark is now boarded up, so thought hit bar inside, big mistake as bottles only and at 2.20 each just a bit expensive, gotta be pub 5 mins down road next time
Dj wise -There was some problems with planned line up as many were delayed and things had to be juggled a bit, which with my memory, the fact that was not driving, may just reflect in details!
Keith Money - Scotlands finest. This spot was the main must hear for me as last time heard him at the 100 Club did a great set , must have been the most travelled furthest DJ but unfortunately was only given a 45 min spot, started off as expected top rare sounds, all his normal top stuff- dancefloor full of those who like their soul rare and full of quality, the last 15 mins or so dancefloor tailed off a bit though think was due to rare soul fatigue, as so much quality was dished out
Derek Allen - Last time caught him think was down 100 club on return to uk about 3 year ago he was Mr Enthusiastic, dancing, singing, and can remember a great set this time, seemed to be lot more subdued and so did his plays
Paul Baldwin - Great balanced set, he started off with a couple of classy floorfilling revivals, which went down well but had us thinking in for oldies session but then just dropped in Sonatas - Going Down The Road and then Montclairs dead casual like, and carried on with intelligent mixing, gotta be a winning formula as seemed to unify the crowd
Roger Banks - Just caught brief bit of spot seemed normal quality worthwhile set
Bob Hinsley -As always a great set Charisma Band, Bobby Rich and more classy 70s balanced with top 60s rare floorfillers
Kerry L - Memory says mainly classic oldies
Sam Moore - inc some uplifting r+b
Little Scotty- Missed most
Brian Rae - Finishing set and a lot different from last time here with some
great choices of little heard and some first hear to me oldies
Modern - Didnt spend as long as last time as main hall was a lot better this time, Liberation being the brand name with Roger Williams running the show, djs inc Mark Randle, Steve Aggasild and more. To me modern is a complete different kettle of fish nowadays and feel am not really the man to do justice to a review of the room, and not really fair just doing it by popping in every now and again, all I say is there was a fair few in there, dont think as packed as remember last one, dancefloor busy, crowd always seemed to be well enjoying themselves. So djs were doing the works, did hear some classy stuff. So I would consider it a job well done, of course if you were one of the many in there who were having a top time and want to give a more "informative" view feel free to send it in.
Overall View- mix current and oldies, 50/50 may be fair guess, but what was good to hear was some thought going into some of the oldies set, a fair amount of interesting revivals, that did the job and got the floor busy, with not many groans of not that bloody record again that follow some "top" djs . Though thinking starting a Jackie Wilson Because of you Free award as cant remember not hearing it at a venue:) Current rarities, well many ultra rare and just plain normal rare quality sounds were dished out. Though gotta say never agree with total ban on repetition, but was a hell of a lot of it tonite, Cashmeres, Sugar and Spice were two of many that got repeated, sure some were played up to 3 times. Lot of R+B dished out ranging from current popular ones to bit more obscure.
Odds: no lengthy detailed playlists as well busy but one r+b wise heard a great more up todate version of Lillians Offitt - Miss you so - sort of takes the happy days feel out of it and gives it more solid 60s r+b feel that works well and better to me.Ted Taylor on Ronn being the one to look for. Since found has in past been popular mod spin.
End of story - a most enjoyable niter, better than last one in my view, myself would have prefered some of the well known oldies to have be given a rest, but one mans poison..... think the mix worked well with the crowd and a good balance and nite for all was achieved.
As always just my own and others personal view of things, feel different? Well dont start moaning at me ...just use that submit button!

Fallen into the pit?

Always used to think try and do the right thing is the best policy for internet and
thought that others would do same. Bit naive maybe but at least was happy
with myself. Well after seeing a certain person try and devalue ( yet again) stuff I am
involved with. I went off on one and replied to comments that he made in an
issue of a magazine on this site.
As was well jacked off with the way he lied and twisted things wrote most of
it fuming.
On reflection I now feel that at the time I had fallen briefly into the same sort of cess pit he enjoys living

Hoagy Lands / Sid Barnes

Just to let you know that Ive just found out that Hoagy is yet again in hospital, but this time it is something to do with his legs.

Just got a CD of Hoagys performance along with Sids from Cleethorpes and they are thinking of putting it out on CD after it has been edited. The sound quality is superb as the recording was made through the mixing desk at the venue. More details will be available through their websites

Weekend Bits From Up North Wales/NW

Quick Word on Broughton Wings Soul Nite.

First time visit to this venue and a great nite. Held in the British
Aerospace social club at Broughton near Chester, nite was a well welcomed
change from the normal format of events. The club itself is a very plush
venue that the words social club just doesnt do justice. Because of world
events, there was a tightening of security but this was hardly noticable.

Sounds wise, well few plays below but were talking about across the board
feel here with all eras covered and not just the token 60s 45 as some "open
minded " venues do, which fitted in perfectly with the venue and the crowd.
As said just a quick word, but if youre after a classy nite out with some
well classy soul this well could be your thing. Most definitely be returning
and recommended.

Couple of top plays from the nite from DJs

Steve Thomas (Holyhead) first main spot

Charles Johnson - Never had a love so good - Alston

Soul Communicators - Those Lonely Nights - Fee Bee

Jive Fyfe - If I had a Chance - Decca

Dells - Thinking About You - Cadet

Bob Hinsley Top 3 plays from the nite

Bobby Rich - Theres A Girl Somewhere For me- Sambea

Charisma Band - Aint Nothing Like Your Love- Buddah

Vivian Carrol - Oh Yeah Yeah Yeah - Merleen

Brian Ellis was on next but by that time was well in to enjoyment mood and forgot to ask plus memory let me down

Soul Sam finished the nite with as always some great stuff

Played a couple of Detroit 60s one offs - which sounded good on first hear
one dodgy recollection was -
Had a quick visual at one and tried comitting it to memory ! result was
Marget Lettin - love will find a way - genloro
but even now looking at it doesnt seem right at all, still its as good as it
gets, treat it as a anagram challenge
the other which after a determined effort to remember all 3 of us could come up
with was errr..
it had the word angel in.

Friday saw monthly local soul nite at Llandudno Rugby Club,

Djs inc Mark Mac, Mark Morgan, Chico, Tash +,

As always a good social nite,

Sounds wise Oldies, Current , R n B and 70s

Managed to grab top 3 from nite of Chico whos guesting at next Broughton

Viola Edwards - love Me Baby

TSU Tornados - Please Heart Dont Break - rampart st

Jerry and Capreez - Shes Gone - c/up

Sunday saw Soul Sam at The Carlton Pub Llandudno for a top local casual laid back pub quality soul nite.

For your diarys both next Broughton and Soul Sam at Carlton are on weekend around the 15 Dec

Greatstone Hotel, Manchester - Sat. 17/11/01

The place to be for rare soul this weekend in the north west is the Greatstone Hotel, Stretford, Manchester. This weekends guest DJs are Phil Wainwright and Alex Jones, both of whom have superb collections - be prepared for some awesome seldom heard toons.
For those of you who havent been its a cosy little cellar bar, not unlike the Beehive in Bradford, but this place is suited more toward the chin rubbers amongst us as there isnt that much room to dance. Another attraction is that you get a supper included with the admission.

Review: Wilton Niter Last Friday By Mark H

Review: Wilton Niter Last Friday by Mark H
Well seems like was a definite weekend and a half if quality rare soul is your bag. Onwards and Upwards!
Mouse and Andy Dyson started things off with some class tunes, like Love Stormy Weather, that thing on Transitional "It Dont matter baby" that is the dogs danglies, Clarence Hill and some new discoveries that I didnt know.
John Hosler was on next with things like "man from soul" and the great [need a copy] Tootsie Rollers "Give Me Love".
John Britton played some great Modern tunes and Richard Caiton.
Roger Banks played the great Charmaines "Standing in the need of love" and Soul Bros. Inc "Pyramid". Also must mention the mega Creations track he played. No idea what it is though, but it sounded like a Motown acetate?
Chicago Shane Cox treated us to some mega Chi-soul like, Ernest Mosley, Attractions [June Bug], Del-Tours, Vel-vets [Number One], Perk Lee on Boss [need one of these too.]. Then over to the west coast for Ty Karim "you really made it good to me" Romark
Saus was up to his great self and what a pity he hasnt the inspiration he once had to d.j. more, as the Wilton is really the only place you can see him now. Dittis of distinction included, Johnnie mae Matthews "Mamas gonna stop you", Lonnie Lester "you cant go", Demetrice Faire "young girl", Spidells "Dream girl" plus a few Motown goodies like, Marvellettes "only your love can save me" and Four Tops "I cant escape your memory" and staying with Detroit, Shades of blue "A way to love you".
That left Bob Hinsley to finish off proceedings. Highlights from the three quarters of an hour we heard before myself and Chalky left were, Trends "Not too old to cry", Bobby Rich and Don & Ron.
Great night as usual.
2002 dates are as follows:
all Fridays 11 - 6
JAN. 18
MARCH 15
MAY 17
JULY 19
SEPT. 20
NOV. 15

Review - 100 Club Saturday by Irish Greg

Review - 100 Club Saturday by Irish Greg
The 100 Club All-nighter was one of the best Ive attended over the last year or so. The music was of a very high standard (even higher than normal) with Mick Smith spinning the newly discovered (Unreleased) version of Trick bag by CP LOVE and not Tommy Tate as some people are saying. Mick also spun the likes of The Inmates, Bobby Rich, Classics on Yang-G, Eric Lomax C/up, True-Image, Magnetics plus many more top raritys.
Shifty was also on top form and spun some great new 6ts stuff that I have not heard before plus many one offs.
Adey C. spun the record of the night though, unreleased track by The Charmaines (stomping Soul/RnB in real Dr.Truelove style).
Adey also spun an unreleased version of the Classic Doris Troy track ILL DO
ANYTHING by DEE DEE SHARP.
Carl Willingham did his bit but I just didnt rate his so called RnB tracks (much to Early for my ears! Some sounding like 5ts blues) but when called upon he spun some nice rare tunes.
Butch? Well nothing needs saying-The DJs D.J. really delivered a rarest of the rare set with Mello Souls, Tranells, Mayfield Singers, Nat Hall & many of his current
c/ups.
The night was also helped as many of the London crowd pissed it upearly on at The Pleasure Unit in Bethnal Green (Soul/Mod pub in East London).
The 100 Club Atmosphere was great and that certainly added to the night, long may that continue. Remember I usually leave The 100 All-nighter at around 6am but this one was so good that at 8am I was still dancing to The Impressions while my mates were playing with paper Aeroplanes on the stage!!!.
TOP NIGHT
