Does anyone have an idea as to the price of one of these?

This is an up/mid tempo version and not the ballad version that is generally on the flip of the issue of Is It All Over.

Firstly good to see the other night at Monumental even if i was a bit drunk, not sure what you mean about alt take of is it too late, i have both of his polydor 45s so what label is it on etc? as for price i think £200 in a certain price guide but not sure about that either, i remember paying alot less for my polydor 45s from a man in Chicago when i got them out of his boot of his car, happy days.

I think the point of the two Polydor issues of 14176 is that most feature a version of Ollie Nightingale's "I Gave Her Everything That She Needed" a dead slow ballad, mis-credited as "It's Too Late". Some copies feature the real "Is It Too Late" a completely different midtempo song featured in the soundclip at the link above. I would imagine the latter is an extremely rare record which would be very difficult to price. Double sided issues of the two ballads are reasonably difficult to find in their own right.

Anomalies like this on major labels are fascinating. I had certainly never heard of it until John Ridley updated his article on Pep Brown.

I wonder if anyone on here has this particular issue and if there are any visual clues in the deadwax which might distinguish the two issues other than actually playing them.

For what it's worth I don't think the guitar part ruins the record, which is extremely good to my ears. It's great to hear his voice on anything, so this find is a real treat.

Thanks for posting the above,as always your knowledge of all things soulful leaves me wondering what the hell do i know about this music i'm meant to love.... must try harder to pay attention.

I have just looked at my copy of Is it too late, which is the same version of the clip above, the a side in the deadwax has a number stracthed out not sure if that would help.

I too hadn't heard the "real" version until last week when I clicked on the the Pep Brown page on John Ridleys site, don't know how long the update has been there and I must say I really like it.

This is one that has eluded me for an age.......Gary sold a copy of this in Crazy Beat years ago and it perked my ears up at the time - oddball intro but settles into a reet nice groove - top vocal. Made a mental note to pick one up myself, only to find that every copy I saw / played sounded nothing like I remembered. To the point where I thought I must have dreamt it or been seriously mistaken. Soon as I clicked on the link it all came flooding back.....

Nice one John, I've got both the Walden singles 'good thing' knackered. Polydor 7's not the one you've mentioned or the rare Lava single but love his voice. With better songs he could have been up there with James Carr, Spencer Wiggins etc.
