It's an odd one this. I bought a copy of Frances Nero "Keep On Loving Me" on auction. Played great on first listen but now every time I play it I notice tiny black shards on the record surface.

Is this just crap being scraped out of the grooves by my stylus (I have a good Project Debut turntable with a good stylus in so unlikely to be damaging the record) or has the record likely been cleaned with a bad solvent that is degrading the vinyl itself.

Any ideas from the technical gurus out there?

Shoe Polish......or something similar used to give the false impression that a dull 45 is a nice shiny Ex grade.

Motown used some bad pressing plants! Frances Nero is one of those records that go gray in the grooves after a couple of plays! Nice vinyl, but full of cheap carbon!

could have been polished up with furniture polish i.e mr sheen or something. this comes off as well. try slow running cold water.a bit of squeezy , wipe round with a clean cloth.repeat process, then finish off with more slow running water then dry off. i do this with every 45 that goes thru my hands. gets shit and static out of the grooves. if record is fucked it dont help but it wont harm it anymore either. worth a try

Coat the wax only with Glass Plus. Play the record wet. Carefully rinse off the disc with water after a play. Towel dry with a soft towel. Don't use a fresh needle cause you don't want to damage a good needle. This will dig out any gunk in the grooves. You shouldn't have any problems after this. This method also works with dirty records that conventinal cleaning does not work well with. I've had discs that play like crap and after using this method they play like a charm. -Barry
