Hope you won't think I'm flooding the forum with daft questions; it's just that one seems to prompt another, and frankly, this is such a great place to get answers to those things that have puzzled me for years.

Here goes: anyone know the Invitations song that came out on JayBoy around 1971? It was titled "Picking Up"; was this a label misprint? To my ears they are singing "PACKING up".

And are these the same Invitations who we know and love? The production sounds a tad British.

And lastly, anyone think "Hallelujah" by the (same?) group is just the most gorgeous slab of mid tempo soul?

"Hallelujah" was played by either Nige Shaw or Cookie at the Rhyl Weekender earlier this year, the only time I recall hearing it played out at a venue. As you say superb piece of mid tempo soul, cheapish too at about £30.

I don't think they are the same Invitations (but i'm sure someone will know for sure).

The Invitations that recorded Hallelujah hailed from New York and were made up of Bobby Rivers, Herman Colfield, Wilson 'Gary' Grant , Bobby Rivers and at some point O'Neil "Duke" Johnson ). The original label was Dyno Voice (formerly owned by Bob Crewe) and it was b/w "Written On The Wall".

Jayboy was a subsiduary label of President UK (as was Joy) and i don't think the above invitations had any association with either Jayboy or President. President primarily issued west coast stuff. Pete Smith wrote a Soul Source article a while back on President -

I have the first two and 'Crazy' and they're excellent 70s records.

Incidentally lead singer with the Invitations (from 1972) was a certain Lew Kirton (of Heaven in the afternoon fame - bit of trivia free-of-charge!!)

Is it "the" Lew Kirton?? as his name is actually spelt Lou Curtin.

The Invitations made frequent visits to the UK under the guise of The Original Drifters.

Jayboy did put the odd track or two out that weren't issued in the US so they could well have recorded the Invitations on one of their visits.
